Great introduction to a new author for me, and a wonderful addition to our collection for our patrons. I look forward to more! THANK you!
This was a good start to this Supernatural series. As a novella, it did seem a bit rushed in places, but it had good potential and left me wanting m9re
My Review: Addy and coops are awesome characters and their crime solving is so much fun. The plot was good but sometimes it makes the reader feel that some more depth into the story would be better. It is normal paced most of time but sometimes in some scenes it feels rushed. The book is a good read.
My Recommendations: Devong monk fans and IA fans will enjoy this book. Similar to burn for me ( Hidden legacy series) and Death and relaxation( ordinary magic series).
My Rating: 4/5
Southwest Heat is the first book in the Southwest Supernatural Society series by E.L. Adams. Addyson Owings is the best at what she does—working as an investigator for the Southwest Supernatural Society, where crimes come in all shapes and sizes. But when her ex shows up after seven years, partnering with her on a serious crime, she’s faced with not only figuring out why a family was killed without a single mark on their bodies, but also with the lingering attraction to the man who broke her heart. Cooper Braxton plans to get his woman back. He has one weekend to help solve a complex crime that combines the world of paranormals and humans while also convincing Addyson to give him a second chance. His success rate is high, and he doesn’t plan to lose now. But when a traitor takes a kid as a hostage, Cooper and Addy must overcome their past while saving the innocent, stopping a killer, and trying to salvage any chance of their happily ever after.
Southwest Heat is a mixed bag of second chance romance and suspense. I thought Cooper and Addy were good characters, although I do not feel like I know either of them well. I liked the premise and the potential of everything this book could be, but while it was an enjoyable read it did not quite meet my hopes for the read. Because of the second chance romance aspect of the book I felt like I did not get a whole lot of character building, and I felt like because of the series aspect of the book some of the world building was not quite as developed as I might have liked because there will be room for that later in the series. I thought the suspense as to how they were going to save victims was good, but again it felt very surface level with very little actual detective work happening. I think there were many great ideas, but each could have stood for more attention. Like perhaps have the pair do some sleuthing rather than getting busy in other ways, or have them figure out their relationship a bit more in depth and then hunt for the bad guys. It just felt like watching the trailer to a movie- just the big moments- and none of how we got there.
Southwest Heat is an interesting and engaging read but I felt there could have been more depth.
A quick, fierce read, with ex lovers turned reluctant partners. Pair some hot chemistry with a paranormal mystery and you've got the perfect storm! Cant wait for the next installment!
I didn't realize when I requested this book from Netgalley, in exchange for my honest review, that it was a novella. I usually only enjoy novellas when they expand a secondary character's role on an established series. I also focused on the Sci/Fantasy, but it was definitely more of a second chance PNR.
There needed to be more setup especially since the series is called Southwest Supernatural Society. The story would have also been more satisfying if the plot were fleshed out to a full length story. The story was quite basic, but interesting enough to finish.
Thanks to the author, publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book.
It was well written, with good characters. However, there was too much romance and not enough plot
This would have been better if it had at least kept the basic plot until chapter 2, a bit too predictable. not a bad detective story.
Addyson and Cooper are part of a supernatural police force. They have a passionate history and must work together to solve a case that seems to grow in intensity. This is a supernatural second chance romance that doesn't focus much on the angst which I appreciate. I enjoyed this book and see a lot of potential for series growth. I read this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A big thank you to NetGalley and City Owl Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first in a new series. I enjoyed the book, although some explanation about the paranormal life would have been nice. At first meeting I thought Cooper was a dufus, but he grew on me. I liked Addyson a lot and they had good chemistry. There were parts that were confusing but overall a good read. 3 stars. I would read the 2nd in this series.
I hadn’t read this author before, but I was intrigued by the blurb and requested this. I just finished it in one setting. This book is fun, well-written, a great mystery, and an engaging series starter. This is the first in a series, and this definitely feels like a set-up book leading to even better books. We are introduced to Addy and Cooper who have a history. They get put on a case together as they are at odds because of their past, and I just loved the way they got back together. This mystery didn’t exactly tie up, and I’m more than ready for the next one. Highly recommend. I was provided with a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Police action, corruption, kidnapping, and yea, paranormals! A fun twist on murder investigation and the typical police procedural. Plus add a broken relationship and a bit of brewing heat that you just want to get steamy - all makes for a fun and fast read.
