Having read quite a few Robert Bryndza’s books I was really looking forward to reading this book but I have to say it wasn’t as good as I had expected. There was too much repetition of the reasoning behind the trail of the two Private Investigators, Kate and Tristan, who we met in the previous book. The story was tenuous and not very engaging. There were pages of descriptions that I admit I skim read. However towards the end things picked up a little - but with no other angle explored, the denouement was signalled early as the only possible outcome. I won’t give up on Robert Bryndza as I have previously enjoy his books but will just chalk this one down to one that isn’t his best. 2.5 stars upgraded to 3 as I hope the next one will be better.

Devil’s Way is the fourth, and IMHO, the best book in the Kate Marshall series. This is a procedural mystery about a missing child case.

11 years ago, a 3-year-old boy went missing from a campsite. While in the hospital recovering from an accident, PI Kate Marshall is commissioned to solve the crime. With her partner Tristan in tow, the two begin digging up the past, leading to a startling revelation about little Charlie’s disappearance.

This book can be read as a standalone.

Kate and Tristan’s characters make this book so readable. After an accident, Kate is struggling--she is questioning her choices and is tempted to drink again. Tristan is also struggling in his relationship with Kate--he is now her partner, but she is icing him out, making him question if he is in the right profession. The tension between Tristan and Kate had me on edge.

In addition to Tristan and Kate, characters from previous books make an appearance--I was happy to see Ade back.

The mystery was just ok--it was easy to figure out, and a plot I have read before. It has many layers, numerous unsavory suspects, and red herrings mixed in. However, it was made more interesting by some of the main players, and it takes a bit of a crazy turn towards the end.

My one gripe is that the ending dragged for a bit--I just wanted them to get on with it.

This series got off to a slow start for me, but it has really come together. What made this book especially compelling was the character development of both Kate and Tristan. This book makes a solid addition to an entertaining and compelling series, and I look forward to seeing what is up next for these two.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Kate and Tristan are private detectives who have taken on the case of a 3 year old boy who vanished 11 years ago. There investigation takes them down unexpected paths and reveals more questions than answers. This is a well written book with a great plot. I couldn’t stop turning the pages to see what would happen next. Altho this book is part of a series it could easily be read as a stand alone. This is the first book i have read by this author and I will certainly read him again. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

A more simply written book; definitely different than American fiction. I enjoyed the story line, twists and turns, and the back story.

Although I have only read this series by Robert Bryndza I think he is a fab writer and intend to read more. This 4th book in the series is as good as the other 3. Kate is a wild swimmer and has been for years especially after dealing with her alcoholism. One day she is caught in a riptide and had to go to the hospital for tests. While in the hospital she meets a lady called Jean Julings and her next case starts. Kate is such a likeable character as is her sidekick Tristan. As the story progresses you really feel as you are in the surroundings of Dartmoor and almost behind them watching as they work. I really did not want the story to end. A wonderfully great read – nothing else to say

Devil's Way introduced me to Robert Bryndza and his Kate Marshall series. Although not the first in the series, it can absolutely be read and enjoyed fully as a standalone.

The case of a missing 3 year old boy is the central focus of this novel but as Kate and Tristan unpick clues and gather information they are led in many different directions, uncovering other crimes that 'seem' linked.

I thoroughly enjoyed this crime thriller and liked the private investigator aspect. I thought the characters vulnerabilities added to the overall picture which I'm sure will continue to be explored in future novels.

Although Devil's Way was my first Robert Bryndza, it won't be my last!

This is my first book by this author and it won’t be the last. A gripping thriller.

When 3 year old Charlie goes missing police assume he has fallen into a raging river and been swept away. Ten years later a chance encounter between his grandmother and a private investigator leads to them uncovering the truth about the night he went missing

Devils Way is an excellent, excellent thriller. The setting was creepy in a good way for a thriller. Remote. Desolate. A lone house in the distance. It had me on the edge of my seat, following all the leads or lack thereof with the characters. I couldn't put it down! I can't wait to read more from this new-to-me author!

Private Investigator Kate Marshall and her side kick/partner Tristan Harper are back, and, in this installment, they are looking for a child who has been missing for eleven years! This is the fourth book in the series and as always, it was fantastic! Plus, that cover!

Kate Marshall loves her early morning swims in the Ocean. It is integral to her wellbeing and sobriety. One morning she gets pulled into a riptide current and wakes up in the hospital, lucky to be alive. While hospitalized she meets Jean, who lost her grandson, Charlie elven years ago on a camping trip. Kate naturally agrees to help and once she has recovered, she and Tristan begin their search.

As they investigate, they learn things about Jean's past and Charlie's early years. Did Charlie wander off in the night? Was he abducted? Was foul play involved? Could he have fallen into Devil's Way, a rushing river near where they were camping?

Following up on all the clues and speaking to everyone around at that time, Kate and Tristan, ruffle some feathers, discover some truths and make others nervous. With a child that has been missing for eleven years, there isn't much to go on, but failure is not an option for them, and they dive deep and won’t let anything get in their way!

I love Kate and Tristan' characters and their relationship with each other. They are both likeable characters with backstories that evoke emotion while also showing how far both have come in their lives. I also admire their dedication to their jobs. In this book, Kate's near-death experience has her reeling and thinking of alcohol. Tristan steps up to the plate and Kate gets testy with him when he asks how she is doing/coping. Both are fantastic and likeable characters and seeing them both rattled a little only serves to make them feel more real. Plus, Kate's conversations with her son were nice to read.

This book was interesting from the beginning. Knowing how much Kate loves her morning swims, it was hard to see her injured doing what she loves. But in the end, it also speaks to her resiliency and determination. The mystery of a missing child had me doing my own super sleuthing with these private investigators. I was invested in wanting to know what happened the night he went missing from his family's camping site.

As with the previous books in the series, this book was gripping and had a nice blending of Kate and Tristan's personal and professional lives. I have enjoyed their character development and growth from over the course of this series.

I'm already looking forward to the next book in this series!

Thank you to Raven Street Publishing and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Never disappoints!

If you love Robert Byndza’s Erika Foster, then you will also adore Kate Marshall and if you've never read either but enjoy a good detective story set in a scenic place. you are in for a treat!

Kate is a former police detective who is currently running a holiday business and private detective agency with her friend and former co-worker Tristan.

Kate is also a recovering alcoholic who had a child with a serial killer….a lot! This background, however has helped to form an interesting character that you root for and want to know more about.

Kate and Tristian are slowly building their business and quietly gaining a reputation . A chance encounter leads to them being asked for help by a grandmother whose grandson went missing years ago while on a family camping trip ,Kate and Tristan are tasked with uncovering clues and a trail that went cold long ago.

Tristian is surprised to find that someone he knows is connect to the case and Kate is overcoming a health scare that has shaken her confidence.

While trying to unearth what happened to that little boy so long ago, Kate is surprised to uncover ties to another murder. Was the murder of someone assigned o protect children somehow connected to her missing child? Was there something sinister in the family, and is the secret of the missing boy one that will remain hidden?

As Kate and Tristan follow a twisting trail of clues, how many lives will be impacted by what they find?

I loved this return to the Kate Marshall story.. I especially love the descriptions of the campgrounds and marshes. I also love how the author is not afraid to show how vulnerable Kate is and that her sobriety is something that she does think about and has a support system for, instead of the books where the alcoholic is miraculously healed. The conflict between Tristan and is sister is also very real and reflective of real families.

Most importantly , I loved that it only briefly referenced her involvement in the previous serial killer case. The first book in the series was a great introduction, but that story was revisited one two many times in the subsequent books.

Tristian is trying to find his footing as living as an openly gay man and declare his independence from his sister, and Kate is continuing to straddle a line between sobriety and finding her purpose. while overcoming her horrific past and regret for the time she missed with her son. You can also see Tristan being given more responsibility and taking more risks within the agency.
Although it was fairly obvious to me early on what happened, it was satisfying getting to the revelation in the end, and a very realistic outcome of the ramifications. It is not always a happy ending!

I really enjoy the characters that Bryndza creates. If you like police and detective procedurals, you will enjoy this book. I don’t think it is necessary to have read the previous books in the series, but it wouldn’t hurt.
I can’t wait to have more Kate Marshall and Erika Foster….bring on the next one.

*I was graciously given an advanced copy of this book by the publisher and NetGalley in turn for an honest review..

“Devil’s Way” is part of the “Kate Marshall” series authored by Robert Bryndza. This book was my my first time both reading, and listening to, a book written by Bryndza and that is due to the good folks at NetGalley. The plot summary: Marshall, now a private investigator after formerly being with law enforcement, sets off to solve a decades-old mystery of a three-year-old child who suddenly disappeared while on a camping trip with his family. Devil’s Way is a gorge that Charlie, the three-year-old, may have fallen into 11 years previously.
For those that enjoy your solid murder mystery you came to the right book! We don’t know whether little Charlie was murdered, but we do know that a social worker connected to the mystery was brutally killed and that mystery needs solving also. Reading this fourth book in the series makes me wish to go back and read the first three. I would categorize this book as an “ above average procedural mystery..”

Devil's Way was my first read from the author. Although this one is fourth book in P.I Kate Marshal series but the story is easy to read as standalone without readers must doing reading backlog.

The main story following Kate who struggling to healing from her personal trauma while take the old missing child case. The mystery plot started very strong and intrigued me. The storytelling was captivating, tidy plotline with tendency some repetitive facts here and there. The detail investigation procedures was slower than my personal preferences. Some suspects and facts given partials in layers of facts and adding suspense until the last revealed.

This book will attract readers who interest with light and cozy mystery investigation with characters driven focus.

Thank you Netgalley and Raven Street Publishing for provided my copy. My thoughts always my own.

If you love detective novels with strong female main characters, and you haven’t discovered Robert Bryndza yet, then you are in for a treat! I have been following both of his detective series for a couple of years now. DCI Erica Kane and Private Investigator Kate Marshall are both flawed characters with messy pasts that are explored throughout each series.

In 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙡‘𝙨 𝙒𝙖𝙮 (Book 4) Kate Marshall agrees to investigate a the disappearance of a young child who has been missing for 11 years. This leads to several unexpected twists, and soon Kate and her assistant, Tristan, are investigating a brutal murder.

Robert Bryndza is known for his intricate storylines and well-developed characters. I enjoyed the mystery in this one and didn’t guess the correct culprit until near the ending! I always like to start a series with book one, just to enjoy the characters and to get a sense of who they are. You have time to start this series before 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙡‘𝙨 𝙒𝙖𝙮 is released in January!

My sincere thanks to Raven Street Publishing, @robertbryndza, and @NetGalley for my digital copy. My thoughts are my own.

Robert Brenda is one of my favorite mystery writers, and his books have been best sellers in 29 different countries. This story is about an English family that goes camping on the moors, and their three year old son disappears. The tale reminds me of the Australian story about Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton who claimed a dingo ate her baby. Like Lindy, none of the people involved in the mystery of the missing child are reliable narrators. They are a little dodgy and years later had still not been found.

Thank you NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for the eARC.
PI Kate Marshall almost drowns and while in hospital, she meets a woman who asks her to find out what happened to her 3-year old grandson who went missing 11 years ago. Shortly thereafter, the boy's social worker was murdered.
Her PI partner Tristan and her take the case which leads them on an almost impossible road to the past.
This was such a good book, I loved it. Kate and Tristan are terrific, so well fleshed out and although parts made me sad, it comes to a satisfactory conclusion. I love this author's style of writing...
Highly recommended!

I read my first Bryndza six years ago (Erika Foster #1). I recently read #7, which reminded me what an excellent writer he is. I wasted no time in picking up this latest Kate Marshall. Every book endorses his talent.

I was thrilled to see that this was #4, because that means I've got #1-3 to read! Bryndza's books are very addictive, well structured, well researched, and I love that his books are perfectly stand-alone. I've been reading his books in random order (just the way they've landed in my lap), and at no point have I scratched my head in confusion about any reference to the main protagonists' pasts.

Kate Marshall is an ex-police officer turned private PI, who with her partner, Tristan, in this book, is asked to search for a child who went missing eleven years previously, by his grandmother. She doesn't really hold out hope he's alive but just wants closure. Kate and Tristan uncover quite the tangled web.

I'm now totally besotted with Bryndza's books, and I've now got organised and have gone back to the beginning. Erika Foster #1, read. Now reading #2 (totally glued already). Next, Kate Marshall #1.

And if I haven't heaped enough praise on this author, I have an extra sprinkling for him for acknowledging his readers first and foremost.
