This is another outing for Kate Marshall and her detective agency.
Eleven years ago a three year old boy went missing while camping by the Devil’s Tor on Dartmoor.
When she finds herself in hospital, Kate is asked by the boy’s grandmother to reinvestigate the disappearance.
Working with Tristan, she discovers links to a murder, and finds herself working in close co-operation with the police, as well as following her own path.
The final resolution was a little too neat, but it was worth it for the ending, which was not tidy.
Thanks to Netgalley and Raven Street Publishing for the opportunity to read this book.
I really enjoyed this new book about PI Kate Marshall . This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it!! Kate is in the hospital recovering from a near drowning when she meets an older woman in her room whose grandson has been missing for 11 years. When she finds out Kate is a private investigator, she hires Kate to find him. This is a great story and I thank NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.
Devil's Way by Robert Bryndza is another explosive Private Investigator Kate Marshall book!
So happy Kate is back and ready for another amazing story.
Robert Bryndza sure knows how to build amazing suspense while unwinding his plot.
A well written, well developed and captivating story.
Despite the slowness I felt after the killer beginning, I found this to be hard to put down and riveting.
This novel has a twisty plot that is cleverly executed.
You know Bryndza is a master storyteller when he hooks me like he did.
This is an awesome, intense crime thriller that will leave the readers wanting more of it.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Raven Street Publishing,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this eARC!
Robert Bryndza continues to deliver! In this, the fourth Kate Marshall book, he deftly intertwines suspenseful subplots and interesting characters for a twisty mystery.
Kate is recovering in the hospital after after a swimming mishap when she meets Jean, a woman whose grandson has been missing for eleven years. Kate eventually agrees to look into the disappearance and together with her detective agency partner, Tristan, they begin piecing together the events leading up to Charlie's disappearance. All clues point to drowning but when they uncover secrets in Jean's past, they aren't so sure. Was Charlie actually abducted? And what did the gruesome death of a social worker have to do with the disappearance? These and other questions arise as Kate and Tristan delve into the case.
I admit I'm a big Robert Bryndza fan. I love both this and his Ericka Foster series for the simple reason that he is an excellent writer whose books are suspenseful and entertaining. Although the Kate Marshall series isn't as dark as the Ericka Foster, both can be psychological thrillers that take the reader down twisting paths few writers can match. If you haven't read Bryndza and you like well-plotted suspenseful thriller/murder mysteries, I recommend you try him.
Thank you NetGalley and Raven Street Publishing for an advance copy for review. The publication date is January 12, 2023.
This latest Kate Marshall story begins with her getting caught in a riptide and waking up in the hospital where she meets a woman desperately in need of Kate’s PI skills. Her name is Jean, and her grandson, Charlie, vanished over a decade ago during a family camping trip. Although intrigued, Kate realizes that there’s not much hope for a positive outcome when so much time has passed. Her partner, Tristan, also shares her concerns but is as willing as ever to take the opportunity for work.
Most everyone involved with the original missing person case believed that Charlie simply wandered away from the campsite and fell into the river. Jean had stepped out from their tent for a few minutes and Charlie’s parents were in their own tent several yards away. But his body never turned up and there was a part close to a gorge where he would have become stuck so his family couldn’t help holding out hope that he was still alive. Although, Jean did have legally declared dead a few years later, so why the sudden change of belief that Kate and Tristan might discover something new?
It might seem impossible but if anyone can find new clues it would be Kate and Tristan. Their close friendship strengthens their working relationship and gives them complete faith in each other’s hunches. No many how weak the lead is, they know that if the other wants to follow something up, they will have their complete support. It’s great to read stories where the main characters aren’t complete opposites, always bickering or trying to compete with each other. And they know that any little tidbit could be the one that cracks a case wide open.
This series is such a joy to read and I loved this book and how the story unfolded. The ending wasn’t a surprise to me but it was quite bittersweet and I love that the author didn’t romanticize the situation. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series to see what Kate and Tristan get up to!
Kate Marshall is back!!! After being rescued from a riptide current and narrowly avoiding death, she is rushed to hospital. On the same ward is Jean who tells her about her grandson 3-year-old Charlie who has being missing for 11 years. Kate agrees to take the case on. What she finds out is shocking Charlie’s mother was murdered shortly after Charlie vanished. The plot is very dark and twisty. Robert Bryndza can certainly ramp up the suspense and has you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this book…. you will not be disappointed.
This is a really enjoyable book. It is the first I have read by this author so I had not read the previous Kate Marshall books but this did not matter. Although there were a few 'why didn't the police do this or that' moments I kept reading at every opportunity. I liked the characters and look forward to reading more in this series.
This is an honest review of a complementary ARC.
Wow. Another fantastic book from Robert Bryndza.
I’ve read 3 or 4 from this author now and thoroughly enjoy them. You get drawn in and don’t want to put the book down till it’s finished. This is the best sign of a well written story.
Kate and Tristan are PI’s and get hired by elderly Jean to look into her missing grandson from 11 years ago.
Read this book ad soon as you can.
Can’t wait for the next by Robert Bryndza
Absolutely brilliant!! I’ve read a number of Robert’s books and have always enjoyed them, but this, in my personal view , is outstanding ! Okay it’s a preview copy so there were a few typos , and a couple of inconsistencies still to be edited/corrected but overall it’s an excellent read, great story , fabulous characters , and I read it in one day/evening! Highly recommended.
This is book #4 in the Kate Marshall series. Whilst it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone book. I love this author and have read all the books in the series plus his previous series, DI Erika Foster, and have loved them all. We meet Kate and her work partner Tristan again. Kate is a private detective, and her and Tristan have set up their own detective agency. Following an accident, Kate is asked to investigate the case of missing three-year-old, Charlie Julings, who disappeared from a camping trip eleven years before.
This was such an exciting read. Once I started it, I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down and found myself reading it at every given opportunity! I love Kate Marshall – her notoriety in the Nine Elms Cannibal case certainly hasn’t helped her over the years, but she seems settled into her new private detective role with her friend Tristan. We do see Kate in a more vulnerable role than in previous books, and I admit I did really feel for her in this story. The storyline gripped me from the very first page and I was very quickly completely engrossed into what happened to young Charlie Julings! The storyline twisted and turned throughout, following their investigation. As it moved on, there were more questions than answers and Kate and Tristan find themselves involved in more than just the disappearance of the little boy. The locations around the South West of England were mesmerising and as I read I could picture some of the places that I know well, and others that were frightening with their dangerous bogs and sinkholes. The Pixie Tree’s description was amazing, and it was great to have some old folklore rituals included in the dark and desperate storyline.
As with the other books by this author, I loved this one!! It was absolutely brilliant and so cleverly written! The storyline twists and turns and doesn’t give you a moment to catch your breath before you’re off again! I was genuinely sad to come to the end of this book, and I really want to see what happens with Kate in future books – will she carry on being a private detective with Tristan or is the police service calling her back? This was such a good read…so, So, SO good!!!! Fabulous! Would recommend!
I loved this book and Kate and Tristan! I believe this is part of a series, but can be read alone. I'm definitely getting the books to this series!! This book was awesome!!
I love to read how Kate and Tristan are getting on. Kate goes swimming in the sea everyday but on one occasion she is pulled out to sea she comes round in hospital and meets Jean who has a grandson Charlie who went missing from a tent on a camping holiday she asks Kate to investigate for her but it’s not as straightforward as she thinks as there a lot of twists and turns to this story.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC
This book kept me hooked from the very beginning. The characters were interesting as was the story of what happened to Charlie. I figured what had happened pretty early on but it didn’t impact my enjoyment of the book at all. I definitely want to read the other books in this series now!
This is my first book by Robert Bryndza and I was not disappointed. It is part of a series but worked well as a stand alone. With a strong female protagonist and a haunting missing person's case, I was drawn in immediately. Can't wait to read the other books in the Kate Marshall series and highly recommend for others who love atmospheric mysteries. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
So this was my first book in this series and perhaps it would have been better to have read the previous ones but in all honesty it worked.
The characters were well developed I was a bit confused re a couple of plot points but all in all it worked.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own
I loved every second of reading this book. Its so well written and woth so many twists and turns that you just have no clue what's going to happen next. It actually felt like you're watching a series on netflix, it is just that detailed and has that much going on. The characters are well written and you can see everyone and everything so vividly. Absolutely recommend
I liked this thriller…I really liked this book. This author has written a cannot put down mystery. I liked the easy timeline…the third person narrator…the characters come alive on the pages. This would make a great movie or television series. The protagonist, Kate, is likable and intriguing. The other characters add to the story by being believable. The mystery was sad but came to a satisfying conclusion. This book just seemed to me to be like reading mysteries that have entertained for years…like some of my favorites in the past but with a modern touch. This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks also to the publisher and the author. I am eager to read more by this gifted writer. Do not miss this journey with Kate.
Although Robert Bryndza is perhaps better known for his Erika Foster series, his more recent Kate Marshall strand is rapidly becoming essential reading. Kate Marshall was a cop who now runs a private detective agency with her former researcher Tristan. When Kate is in hospital following a near death experience she meets Jean , whose grandson went missing some years ago. On recovering Kate agrees to take on the case of Charlie's disappearance. There is a lot more to the case than expected and the revelations are breathtaking. An excellent novel.
An interesting story about a cold case and private detectives hired to investigate 11 years later.
I found it somewhat disjointed as facts are revealed and may or may not be relevant to the case. Eg:the main character has a serious accident with some immediate health repercussions which is never referred to again.
The unraveling of the case is interesting and probable given the facts that come to light.
For me, the story seems to be in two parts, the first, a scene setting where facts may or may not be relevant to the solving of the crime and the second where the solution to the old case is finally revealed.
