"Misfit's Magic," an audiobook by Fred Gracely, narrated by Colin Watts, takes listeners on a captivating journey into the life of Goff, a young misfit who feels like he doesn't belong anywhere. Constantly bullied and neglected, Goff's life takes an unexpected turn when he finds himself in the small town of Spraksville, where he encounters mysterious forces beyond his understanding.
From the outset, Goff's struggles are palpable as he navigates the challenges of foster care and the hostile environment of his new home. With no connections or sense of belonging, Goff's isolation is compounded by the indifference of his foster family, who show him little warmth or acceptance.
However, Goff's life takes a remarkable turn when he discovers that he possesses a rare and powerful magic known as misfit magic. As he delves deeper into his family's history, Goff learns that he is the descendant of a legendary figure who once saved Spraksville from a dark curse. With the town again threatened by a malevolent force, Goff must embrace his heritage and master his magic to protect the town and its inhabitants.
Gracely weaves a spellbinding tale filled with suspense, mystery, and magic. The narrative unfolds seamlessly, drawing listeners into Goff's world and keeping them on the edge until the end. Watts's narration enhances the immersive experience, bringing the characters to life with skill and nuance.
What sets "Misfit's Magic" apart is its exploration of themes such as identity, belonging, and the power of self-discovery. Goff's journey reminds listeners of the importance of embracing one's uniqueness and finding strength in adversity.
Overall, "Misfit's Magic" is a captivating audiobook that will appeal to fans of fantasy and adventure alike. Its compelling storyline, well-developed characters, and expert narration will surely keep listeners enthralled from start to finish. Whether you're a seasoned fantasy enthusiast or new to the genre, this audiobook is a must-listen.
I extend my gratitude to NetGalley, Bisket Press, LLC, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), and Members' Audiobooks for providing an audiobook-ARC of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Fred Gracely for the audiobook “Misfit’s Magic”. I enjoyed listening to the story. A young boy is accidentally turned into a wizard and soon finds out he has to fight a strong wizard to save his town, including the foster family that has made his life miserable. I hope the story continues!

Dark academia with traces of magic throughout, Misfit's Magic is a perfect autumn read. Stakes are dire, but taken on with a sort of whimsy few authors can find the balance between. Many fantasy, horror, and Halloween fans identify with the word misfit and the book is aptly named as those will be the folk who gravitate toward this adventure that may have just become one of my yearly Ocotober reads.
A really great listen!
My students would enjoy this. Would love to get a copy to read to them in our story sessions.
Thank you to NetGalley for the audio copy!
A misfit and outsider, Goff doesn’t feel like he fits in anywhere. In and out of foster homes and constantly bullied at school, he has no connections, no direction, and no future prospects. When he arrives in a new foster home in Spraksville, a reportedly haunted place full of mage, the gargoyles start talking to him. He soon learns that he possesses a rare magic, misfit magic. His family has a history . In fact, he is the direct descendant of the person who saved the town from dark curse many centuries ago. Soon, a dark wizard arrives in two who wants to become invincible. Now history must repeat itself. It's up to Goff to master his magic and save the twon before it’s too late. Will he succeed?
Narrator, Colin Wats does a good job of bringing the frustration and determination of Goff to life. His pace matches well with the author’s pace. The world building is well-done and brings to life the small-town setting with horror, magical realism, and battle of good and evil. Goff is a believable character who readers will relate to, because of his self-doubts and struggles with bullying. Listener who like horror, magical realism, and misfit turned hero stories will enjoy listening to this one. Recommended for library collections where such books are popular.

Goff hates everything about his small town life where he gets bullied and harassed on the daily. His name is unusual enough, but Goff doesn't do so much to help his reputation for being a misfit. His foster family does nothing to make him feel welcomed or accepted either. His foster father favors the twins and leaves all the mundane and drudgery of the household chores to Goff.
On the bright side, Goff has two friends at school and his loyal and sympathetic canine companion.
But when things in town get weird and the adults start to disappear. Goff finds out his family legacy is magical and he's the only one who can stop the mayhem and chaos being released on the town. Can Goff fight against an evil that has been planning the perfect moment for revenge for centuries? Or will his misfit magic prove to be unworthy?

Wonderful middle grade read. Highly recommended for fans of Harry Potter, Amari, Iron Trials and all things magical and misfit related.
I really enjoyed this middle grade witchy tale! It's perfect for older elementary and middle school students who don't mind some dark elements to their stories.
I listened to the audio version, thanks to Netgalley (no thanks to their terrible tech in the app, though. Excellent and engaging narration that--no pun intended--brought the story to life.
I loved this book! All the twist and turns! I love how they work together to get things done. This is a must read!! Pick up this book today!!
I think the pace is quite slow, I found my thoughts wandering around when I listened to it, but I think it has a good story overall.
I really enjoyed this book it was a bit of a slow starter but once I got into it, it flowed really well, the story kept me interested and I found myself anxiously worrying about what was to happen next.
All in all a throughly enjoyable story
This is the story of Goff who is accidentally turned into a wizard and must fight the big bad. It was a really cute story that I think kids would really enjoy. Goff is a great character and I love his friends. I think everyone will find something they enjoy about this book.
I really enjoyed the production quality of 'Misfit's Magic: The Last Halloween' and thought the music was a nice touch in the audiobook. 'Misfit's Magic' is a middle grade read that follows Goff, an unassuming teenager that magic befalls him. Goff is determined to win a scholarship to get him out of his boring town. Goff unwillingly becomes a wizard as he attempts to create a spell to set his application form above the rest. A true misfit, Goff doesn't fit in and can't control his magic. His unwilling accomplices are thrown in alongside him as he tries to prevent a magic apocalypse (of sorts) from happening on Halloween. A fun, fast paced read.
It’s hard for me to rate an audiobook since I’m always trying to consider how much the narrator might have enhanced or weakened my thoughts toward the story. Hard to know. But as I listened to this spooky tale I was quickly drawn in by a wonderful British accent. Colin Watts, the narrator, did a terrific job of bringing this story to life.
It was refreshing for me to learn that Goff, a boy who was being bullied, ended up having the ability to save the town from a disaster. And our potential hero definitely didn’t fit the superhero mold. He was an orphan, a loner at school, and was continually bullied. You might say he better fit the mold of . . . a misfit?
Things really start to get exciting when our misfit accidentally becomes a wizard. Then, in time, he starts to figure out what’s going on around town.
But will anyone listen to his warnings?
Okay, I’m going out on a limb here, but the whole time I listened to this audiobook I kept comparing it to Harry Potter. It was good. Really good. Just like Harry Potter.
The characters, both magical and human, were unique and well-developed. The story was captivating.
My Concerns
I loved the narrator’s British accent, but it may not work for everyone.
Final Thoughts
Would I have liked the book quite as well if it wasn’t narrated in such an incredible manner? Who’s to say? But I think I would have.
The underlying theme of bullying, friendship, teamwork, and courage was handled beautifully. No didactic message was attached, but rather the story itself stood for the message. I will be completely surprised if kids don’t love everything about Misfits Magic.
Fred Gracely is an author I’ll definitely be putting on my radar.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ability to listen to the audiobook and post my opinion, whatever that might be.
Aww, I wish I had this book for Halloween! "Misfit's Magic" is a fantasy of good vs evil with the lead character Goff, a young orphan boy in Spraksville, a town with a witchcraft past.
Goff lives with a terrible foster family. He's also bullied in school. Goff wants to get away by joining Amworth Academy. While working on an essay for the scholarship, he thought he'd bring his paper up a notch to wow the committee. Goff goes to Spraksville Cemetery to cast a spell and something dark awakens! What follows is an exciting adventure of magic with our little underdog wizard.
"Misfit's Magic" has a wonderfully spooky and eerie atmosphere. Goff is a great character that you can root for. I especially enjoy the audiobook narrator, Colin Watts who really gives the story life. A good story but a bit too long.
Overall, this was a fun story about wizards that still managed to be unique and bring something new to the table. The characters were interesting and the story surprised me and I really liked the narrator of it. Some of the language to describe the looks of others was a bit poorly chosen in my opinion, especially for this being a middle-grade novel, but besides that it was pretty good.
Misfit’s Magic by Fred Gracely Narrated by: Colin Watts Length: 11 hrs and 38 mins was a really enjoyable fun audio book However, the cover did not do it justice! A great spooky book for young minds and especially for Halloween as its a spooky October read!
"When Goff accidentally made a wizard, a young misfit boy is called upon to save the town he’s been desperately trying to escape in this spooky, whimsical tale of magic and mayhem.
Thirteen generations ago, Goff's ancestor stopped a dark wizard from performing an ancient ritual to become invincible. Now, due to magical laws, Goff is the only one who can stop the present-day counterpart from performing the same ritual in Spraksville on Halloween night."
I found this book is brilliant for fans of Roald Dahl’s children books and would be great for my nephew when he gets a bit older. .I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend this audiobook.
I’m in a mood right now to read autumn-set horror and magical stories for kids. I just moved to a new town with actual fall-like weather. There’s even snow on the hills around the house right now! So I absolutely want to feel in the spirit of the season.
I decided to start with Fred Gracely’s “Misfit’s Magic,” narrated by Colin Wats. The story has all the best character tropes: an orphan, a grumpy foster dad and horrible foster siblings, a mysterious stranger, and a talking cat, to name a few. Our protagonist, Goff, has one dream: to write an essay good enough to get into fancy boarding school and away from his miserable existence. When a spell (for research, of course) goes awry, he finds himself a reluctant wizard who must try to stop an evil aristocrat from consuming all the children’s souls in town.
This was a fun listen. The narrator did a great job with the different voices, particularly the evil wizard. Goff is likable and brave, and his friends add a touch of humor to the story. The plot has time travel, disappearing adults, and lots of mystery. The ending is happy and quite satisfying.
I’m sure upper elementary kids would thoroughly enjoy this, and the crisp fall setting makes for a perfectly seasonal read. Fans of Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket would really dig this. I really look forward to where Fred Gracely is going to take his readers next. I received this audiobook from NetGalley.
A very whimsical and magical cozy read for young minds!
it is well-paced and satisfying and I could listen to these characters interact with each other and this wonderful world for multiple hours uninterrupted. The book is engaging, interesting and adventurous. It dives deep down into greatly detailed character sketch of multiple characters which makes it easier for students to listen to and vividly visualize.
The book is imaginative, funny, frightening and, of course, magical! What makes it so successful is that they combine action, fantasy and friendship.
If you like adventure and magic, you'll love the book!
