My wife and I have been celebrating Jólabókaflóðið for years and we found this audiobook so delightful, we ended up buying a copy of the picture book for our home library.
The Book Flood is an enthralling book about a sweet Icelandic tradition, I had never heard of it before but I absolutely want to start practicing it with my own family. The story is short and sweet, and it makes you want to cozy up by a fire with a book and a mug of hot tea. The sound effects on this short audiobook are incredible, I was completely immersed in the narration for the entirety of the book. The narrator does a wonderful job as well.
Thanks NetGalley for the preview!
Loved this cute holiday story! Fun to listen to and hear the magic. A wonderful addition to your Christmas shelf!
*received for free form netgalley for honest review* This is such a cute book, instantly knew what it was referring to though i didn't know the name! will buy!
Such a fun Christmas story. Especially for book lovers. I had to add it to my top Christmas book list.
This is a cozy picture book for kids about giving books on Christmas Eve and spending the night reading. This audiobook was well done with music and sound effects and just made what’s already a lovely book a magical delight. There is an Icelandic tradition called johodkflood and this is a more international version of that tradition. This is a tradition that would be lovely to see families pass on or start as a new tradition for themselves.
The Christmas Book Flood by Emily Kilgore is a magical book that is based upon the Icelandic Tradition where people give books and read all night long!
“Reading is magic, when you have the right book.”
This audiobook is wonderfully done and I cannot wait to purchase this book to see the illustrations.
Loved the idea behind this book as well as the history behind this book idea.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book does not work well as an audiobook. It is clearly meant as a picture book and I'm sure the illustrations are lovely, but there's not enough story there for an audio.
I'm also uncomfortable with the way this writer was chosen to write about the subject. She is not from Iceland. She just thinks the tradition is neat and answered an open call for an author to write about it. Surely there is an Icelandic author who could have been approached to tell this story in a more meaningful way? Someone for whom the tradition was an actual tradition and part of their own life experience? I think this book could have had more magic if written by someone for whom it was more than just a story they'd heard.
What a charming story! Emily Kilgore's The Christmas Book Flood illustrates the Icelandic tradition of gifting books at Christmastime. Enchanting music and amusing sound effects bring this story to life. I’m sure as a companion to the physical book, this version would be most enjoyable.
A bit of history: the author’s note at the end of the story, explaining how paper wasn’t rationed during wartime, so folks could freely gift them. It became a well-loved tradition which continues today, and has spread all over the world.
The Christmas Book Flood by Emily Kilgore is a picture book written in poem form to teach about the tradition in Iceland. The illustrations are wonderful. At the end of the book is the Author’s note which explains her connection to the tradition and how it started during WWII.
I listened to the audiobook. The story is 5 minutes long. The narrator did a great job with the reading, but my favorite part was the background music and sound effects.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audiobook in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review this book.
I listened to this one with my three youngest children (ages 6, 8 and 10) and we all enjoyed it. They loved the story and I loved learning about the tradition. Books are a big deal to me and helping my children learn to appreciate them is important to me.
This was wonderfully written and beautifully narrated.
This was so cute. Perfect for your littles. I loved the narrator and the sounds throughout the story. The story was perfect for Christmas. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the audio arc in exchange for my honest review.
This was a very nice audiobook, but I feel the story is missing something without the pictures. It made me very interested in checking out the picture book when my library gets it!
I love the tradition it talks about of giving books as Christmas presents and the cozy feeling of Christmas that the story conveyed. The author's note at the end was a nice touch, showing the personal side of the story.
I so enjoyed learning about the Christmas book flood tradition in Iceland. The people who live there love to read, read, read. So it's no surprise that when gift-giving season comes around, they reach for books to give to each other. A fun story for youngsters!
The narrator is superb for the audiobook. She has such a happy voice, and the story glitters by in a matter of minutes.
Keep this story in mind for a beautiful Christmas Eve read-aloud!
This book is full of Christmas magic, but moreso holiday magic. I really do with Jolabokaflod was more widely celebrated. I also love the cover illustration on this book.
I accidentally requested this one not realizing it was a children's book until after I got submit. But it was still a really cute book. 😂
This book was just ok. It had a good concept of spreading books at Christmas. It felt like it should rhyme but it didn't.
The Christmas Book Flood by Emily Kilgore is a MUST HAVE for any book loving family. The audiobook version is incredible - the music accompaniment was lovely, the narrator was captivating. My bookworm children and I truly loved it and buying a hard copy is on their Christmas wishlist. We buy books for all occasions, including Christmas Eve anyway, and now we can have a name to attach to the very sweet tradition: Jolabokaflod. We loved learning about Iceland's tradition through the story and the informative author's note. A perfect holiday read!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for the ALC of this amazing book!
This audio captures the magic of books and Christmas in the hustle bustle within bookshops nestled in the paradise of Iceland. The narrator, music, sound effects, we're amazing! I can't wait to buy it just to look at the illustrations! I love the tradition of book-giving in Iceland.
This book is the lyrical rendition of a long-held holiday tradition from Iceland.
Winter has set firmly in, in this beautiful country and folks are preparing for the tradition of gifting books on Christmas Eve. They read reviews and visit bookstore shelves to plan the perfect choices for family and friends. Everyone is joyful and filled with excitement. Folks stream into the bookshop to make their long-awaited purchases. Then everyone heads home to celebrate in homes hung with festive decorations, sparkling lights, sumptuous food, and loving friends and family.
Then comes the best part of all, snuggling up by the fire with hot chocolate and hours of reading their newly gifted books.
I didn’t realize this was a picture book until I began the audio. I know I missed oozy by not seeing the illustrations, but the audio was all but mesmerising.
This is a definite addition to your Christmas book collection.
