Corey Douglas and his K-9 partner Simon Garfunkel are the main characters along with Andy’s wife, Laurie from the Andy Carpenter series. The K-Team is quasi-working with the local police in an unofficial capacity looking into cold cases.
This time Corey chose to investigate his former mentor, Jimmy Dietrich. But these are not cut and dried, find out what happened to Jimmy, one and done. No, this series, as with the Carpenter series, manages to run into sub-plots, becoming seriously complex.
Over the course of the series, I’ve seen a change in Corey and I like it. He’s settling down somewhat, possibly due to his SO, Dani. She’s an independent lady and hasn’t pushed toward that nasty “M” word that even Corey has been tossing around lately.
The serious nature of the well-plotted and paced storylines has loosened a bit, allowing for just a little of the snark I’d grown to love in the Carpenter series.
Lots of characters and one twist after the other can set the reader’s head spinning, but don’t get too excited, you won’t get lost. Of course, my favorite character Simon gets to do his fur missile thing—which he is very good at.
You don’t need to start with Book 1, although you might, just to get the flavor of this particular team of investigators, though this book can work as a standalone.
I have found each entry to the series more enjoyable as they settled into their own cast of solid characters and storyline and can heartily recommend.
I usually try to start a series at the beginning and work my way up. This is my first one in this series but I’ve read several in Rosenfelt’s other series so I knew what to expect from this one, although some of the characters are different. I love this one as much as the other one. It has all the humor, tension, and intriguing cases as the other. My biggest issue with this is that there were so many characters that it was difficult to keep up. However, I enjoyed getting to know Corey and Dani and will look for the previous books before I continue with the series.
Corey Douglas works for the Paterson Police Departments cold case files. He's happy to get to choose what cases he works with his K-9 partner. When Corey takes a look through the next cases up he is immediately drawn to on in particular. The case involves the death of his former mentor Jimmy Dietrich and a woman named Susan Avery. The two bodies were found in the Passaic River and their deaths have gone unsolved for a while and were then considered a cold case. There were talks of murder/suicide but Corey never took to that theory. Follow along as Corey and his K Team look for a killer, will they be able to solve the case or will it remain cold? This was the first book I've read from this author and I enjoyed the characters both two and four legged. I look forward to going back and reading the previous three books while I wait for the next one to come out.
As a longtime fan of Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series, it was fun to listen to this book in his K Team novels to learn more about related characters like Corey Douglas and his retired police dog, Simon Garfunkel. The K team takes on two cases simultaneously; one is assigned to them by Captain Pete Stanton, and the other he agrees to "let" them investigate in exchange for taking on the first case. Both are cold cases, at least on the surface, but as the investigations progress, it becomes clear that they are related, and the perpetrators are paying close attention to their work. Filled with Rosenfelt's signature humor, though less sarcastic than Andy's running commentary, it's another entertaining story and an engaging mystery. The narrator did well bringing this to life, though I admit it was difficult for me to get into at first because I'm used to Grover Gardner's narration for Rosenfelt. Once I got used to it, I appreciated its differences. Highly recommended for lovers of dogs, mysteries, and quirky characters. Received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
My first K Team book and I enjoyed it as much as the Carpenter books. As always David Rosenfelt provides an amusing commentary as Corey and Simon hunt down the bad guys. Although this is book 4 in the K Team series I didn’t feel lost not having read the first three, but it made me want to seek them out because I enjoyed this one so much.
I don't know how David Rosenfelt does it, but I take my hat off to him. He is a prolific writer of two series, the Andy Carpenter series, and now the K Team series. Both are excellent, with no duds among them. Usually, when authors put out so many books in a shortish time, they read like pulp novels., Not these. Both series are well-written, humorous, and wonderful. This fourth entry is a worthy successor to the earlier K Team novels.
This book was highly amusing. Also tense, convoluted, and surprising. I didn't see the end coming. It can be read as a standalone, but really, why would you when there are so many other really good books to read in both of these fine series? I despise spoilers, so I am not going to give any; that's what blurbs are for.
If you like mysteries, or dogs, and have a sense of humor, you will love David Rosenfelt's books in general, and this one in particular. Do yourself a favor and pick it up, you won't be disappointed. My only problem now is having to wait for the next book.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC
This was the first book I've read by this author. I liked the style and pacing. The solving of the cold case moved at a good pace and had a lot of avenues to explore. The main characters were likable, and I enjoyed getting to know them. The dialogue kept the story from going to the dark side. My only complaint was that there were a lot of characters to keep track of. Several had similar names, so it took me a while to keep them straight. I was happy the ending was satisfactorily resolved. I received an advance copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
David Rosenfelt is one of my favorite mystery authors. His humor adds a bit of comic relief to somber subjects. I love that he kept the characters from the Andy Carpenter series because they are familiar to readers, have great personalities, and have different talents and roles that make the team successful. I can relate to Corey because he is not very tech-savvy and neither am I. This story has a very complex plot and kept me guessing the whole time. Another great book I highly recommend if you enjoy a puzzling mystery with a little humor!
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Another witty mystery by one of my favorite authors! A spin off of the Andy Carpenter mysteries, there are some of the same characters, but Andy is not as involved (as we know he doesn’t really like to practice law). The “K” team is retired Detective Corey Douglas, former police officer and Andy’s wife Laurie Collins and Marcus Clark (yes, that Marcus!). They will be investigating two cold cases, the murder of Detective Danny Avery and the murders of Detective Jimmy Detrick and Susan Avery, Danny’s wife. They know that Danny was working on a case of his own when he was killed, but why? Slowly they begin to piece together the people of interest, but are they really who they say they are? When Corey is attacked, he handles himself well, but he always has Marcus as backup. Bit by bit they learn that people are missing along with money they embezzled, but as in all of this authors’ work, the case is more involved than first thought, so pay attention and get ready for another amazing ending! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
This is a Mystery, and this is the fourth book in the K Team series. I really love the characters in this book, and I found this book to be a fun mystery. I enjoyed the mystery in this book. This book has the characters that the Andy Carpenter series has, but Corey is the main character in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Minotaur Books) or author (David Rosenfelt) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
I picked this book to try because of the dog on the cover. I figured a series with K-9 means the dog comes out okay at the end. As it happens, this dog, Simon Garfunkel, partner of Corey, a retired cop, doesn't come much into this particular story, but he's there.
What I got instead was an interesting bunch of characters, and a fairly complicated cold case that Corey and his partners-in-not-crime take on as one of the victims was Corey's mentor. Who would never have committed suicide, much less killed two other people first.
I liked the characters, but what really drew me in was the humor, somewhat dry, often sardonic. If any of this author's other books have more of that humor, I'm totally in.
Things come to a satisfying conclusion, the dog is fine, and I have another author to check out.
Good Dog, Bad Cop by David Rosenfelt
Book 4, K Team Series
I have enjoyed this series from the beginning but maybe not quite as much as the Andy Carpenter series. Corey is funny in a smart-alecky kind of way and I love Simon Garfunkle although he only play a small but important part in this book.
For this book to be so short, it is a bit convoluted and has a very long list of bad guys. Maybe I was having a poor concentration day but it was a bit hard to keep up without a scorecard. I enjoyed it as a quick, funny read.
If you are already a fan of David Rosenfelt and his dog mysteries (and their great humans) then I don't need to tell you anything about this latest mystery featuring Simon Garfunkel, a retired K-9 and his retired cop partner, Corey and the rest of the K Team.. The fact that he wrote it and the cast has our favorite dogs and people in it, that's enough. But for those of you reading about the K Team and wondering why you should waste no time getting your hands on a copy I'll say something about the plot.
Corey, Laurie (married to Andy Carpenter who is owned by Tara, a truly outstanding dog) Marcus and Sam are currently working a couple of cold cases for the Paterson, NJ police department. They have some ties to the victims and are eager to find the killers. The bad guys are equally eager to prevent that from happening. Corey and Laurie do the leg work, Marcus does the "don't mess with us" stuff and Sam does the hacking/snooping stuff. Andy supplies the food and legal advice as long as it won't interfere with the football game. Wait until it's over, please. Simon Garfunkel is is the dog version of Marcus and watches Corey's back. Good dog.
When I have a new David Rosenfelt mystery in my hands the real world fades away and I read it straight through. I'm like Andy and his football game. Please leave me alone until it's finished.
My thanks to the publisher Minotaur and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Good Dog, Bad Cop is another great read by David Rosenfelt. The K-Team has been called in by the police department to help solve cold cases. This time, the crime involves former classmates of Corey Douglas, one of the members of the K-Team. The classmates were killed seven years earlier following a high school reunion. Corey and the team embark on a mission to find the answers even though it seems impossible. I have trouble putting David Rosenfelt’s books down. There is a lot of quick wit, humor, and snarky comments to go along with the twists and turns involved in solving the mystery. This book is fourth in the K-Team series but can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend these books and suggest you read all of them if you have the opportunity.
This is number 4 in the K Team series of books which are a spin off from the Andy Carpenter series. If you start at the beginning and read them all you will have days and days of entertainment ahead of you. The characters are interesting, the mysteries are set up well and there are dogs. What else do you want? If you like audio books these are a great listen as the narrator is just perfect for these two interwoven series. Absolutely listen or read these books!
Good Dog, Bad Cop is the fourth book in the K Team series. I have read only the first prior to this one. This is a spin-off from the highly entertaining and popular Andy Carpenter series—those books now number approximately 27. I have read and enjoyed many of them.
Readers of the Andy Carpenter books will be familiar with the members of the K Team. Andy is an independently wealthy defence lawyer. He is reluctant to participate in a trial but will take on a case when a dog is even remotely involved. Andy uses the K Team for investigations required before a trial. The book is narrated by Corey Douglas, a retired police officer who works with his former police dog, Simon. Corey now runs the K Team as a private detective agency. The team members include Laurie, Andy's wife and former police officer, and Marcus, a large, scary bodyguard. Sam has worked as Andy's accountant but is also a brilliant computer wiz and is being overworked by Corey. I wished the police dog, Simon, had been more involved.
The K Team is hired by the head of the local police department, Pete Stanton, Andy's friend. They are to be used as consultants on cold cases of their choice. Corey's mentor and retired cop, Jimmy D., has been found dead with Susan Avery, rumoured to be a murder-suicide. There is gossip about an affair and suggestions that he was a bad cop. The K Team is reluctant to believe that and wants to reestablish his reputation. They learn that Susan's husband, also a police officer, was shot to death earlier. The label 'bad cop' applies to him. Their first task is to try to connect the three deaths as murder. The investigation has many twists and turns, and they discover that the case may have national implications.
I found the case very complicated and convoluted, with too many characters named. It took a lot of effort and concentration to keep the many names sorted. I became confused when trying to follow the complex plot with its many twists and turns.
I liked that Corey is developing a sardonic sense of humour, which was absent in the first book in the series. He is not yet up the the level of Andy's snide, sarcastic comments, which makes that series more fun for me to read. The books in both series by Rosenfelt all have eye-catching covers depicting attractive dogs. People may mistake them for cozy mysteries, but there is more complexity than that.
Publication is expected on March 14. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Good Dog, Bad Cop will have you chuckling as you turn the pages in this well written series.
This is the 4th book in The K team series and each book gets better ( all them I have really enjoyed).
The bodies are piling up as The K team investigates the cold case of a police officer found murdered and several days later his wife and partner are also dead.
Coincidence, murder/ suicide: the team is skeptical and with good reason.
Twists and turns and red herrings kept me guessing to the final page.
David Rosenfelt brings Good Dog and Bad Cop vividly to life and his endings always leave the reader satisfied.
I cant wait to see what adventure Cori, Laurie, Sam and Marcus and we cant forget Simon (love that dog) get up to next. I will be first in line to find out.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for an engaging yet page turning read.
I only discovered David Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter books a year or so ago and fell in love with them. (There are currently 26 in that series right now! Yikes!) He has now created a spinoff series and Good Dog, Bad Cop is the fourth in this new K Team series. These books have the same feel as the original series, with good mysteries and lots of New Jersey “snark.”
Corey Douglas, Laurie and Marcus are the K Team, plus another very important member: German shepherd and retired police dog, Simon Garfunkel. In this book, they are investigating a couple of cold cases, one of which involves a former member of the Paterson, NJ police force. Things get complicated, of course!
Since I was lucky enough to get access to both the “print” and audiobook versions, I bounced between them. I really enjoyed Fred Berman’s narration.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of this audiobook and to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is my first K Team book and I really enjoyed it! A bit different than the Andy Carpenter books but still with familiar characters. I found it easy to follow even though I haven’t read the previous books. I highly recommend the series! Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
[ Thank you Minotaur Books and Netgalley for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own! ]
I don’t read a lot of police procedurals but I enjoyed this one. It was a light mystery, not like a cozy mystery but not hard core crime novel!
At one time, there was so much going on! I hard a hard time keeping up with information they found. But it came together by the end and I didn’t see how it was going to play out. I think I would of enjoyed it a bit more if I had read books 1-3. It’s a standalone but I really think I would understand the characters and humor more if I read those ones.
One thing that was kinda annoying was that there were no chapter numbers at the top. I know that’s probably formatting issues with the ARC but still found it annoying when reading.
Overall, my first Rosenfelt novel! I definitely enjoyed this and look forward to more from this author!
