I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump. Have only read a couple books in the past few months and didn’t really enjoy any of them. This book was just what I needed to kick my slump. I really enjoyed the relationships Morgan built as she returned home. The part about Gavin wasn’t my favorite, but overall a solid book!
This was such a perfect, twisty, fast paced thrill ride! Nora Roberts mysteries have surpassed her fantasy books for me. This one was no exception. Highly recommend!
thank you to net galley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
*Big thanks to Netgalley & St Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review this title. *
Oh Nora Roberts, what has it been… like 15 years maybe?!? Well, I loved you then and (after finishing Identity) it’s safe to say NOTHING has changed!
In fact, this was the book that caused me to abandon my New Year’s resolution. I know, you just be thinking “you made it to April?!?” Yes, I did- until the last couple chapters when I looked down and realized I had bit off all my nails!!! Damn it.
Anywho.
This book was fab. I loved that Nora took her time introducing us to Morgan; how we came to also know Nina and Luke well enough to be invested in the story very quickly. I loved the character development and how the story flowed at a steady pace. Never lost my attention or had me wanting to skip ahead. Perhaps what I loved the absolute MOST was the slow shift that took place in Morgan’s heart- from lonely and without family, to surrounded by authentic love and support. That, my friends, is a beautiful thing.
What I could have done without: constantly referring to Audrey & Olivia as ‘my ladies.’ Oh my goodness! It drove me absolutely batty. A minute detail, but one that came up often enough that it was distracting.
Would I recommend this read? Sure would! Does NR still reign supreme? Without a doubt!
A special thank you to NetGalley & St martins press for the oppty to preview this uncorrected proof in exchange for my honest review! Identity tells the story of a strong female protagonist whose life upends when her identity is stolen. Morgan returns home to resume her life and reconnect with her family. I love the main character who stays true regardless of what life throws at her. A bit of romance, a bit of suspense and great characters keep the pages turning.
Morgan Albright moves home to Vermont, determined to get her life back after a con artist steals her identity, her nest egg and murders her roommate. Yet, she was the one that got away from the conman, broke his “streak” and he is just as determined to make her pay for it.
Fans of Nora Roberts know what to expect, she has the formula for mixing romance and suspense with likable and believable characters. Identity was a well-paced, easy to read compelling story. Like her characters, this is why her readers keep coming back for more!
Thank you #NetGalley for the ARC of #Identity.
3.5 stars!
I have read a lot of books by Nora Roberts, and all of those in the series under J D Robb. This book, like quite a few of her newer releases, is split into three parts, however, this one redeems itself as I had almost given up on getting the next release as I found that the jump in story for each part left the story disjointed and didn’t allow you to be swept away into the story and the characters. This book, there was no need to split it into three parts, adding a page and name to the part added nothing and could have been removed. The style of writing and the way the characters spoke was very similar to the last JD Robb book and found myself at times thinking that Morgan reminded me of Peabody at times.
So, to the story iteslf...
Part 1 – Plans: this starts out with all the action, as per the synopsis, Morgan meets a Luke when he comes in the bar. Good looking, charming, smooth, and deadly, His sole purpose is to take everything from her except he fails. Financially ruined, her best friend dead, her confidence shaken, she moves back home and starts to rebuild her life, putting down roots with a new job, new friendships and the early shoots of new romance.
Part 2 – New Start: The romance grows, along with her confidence. While Luke as he was known to her when they met, continues to kill, and taunt her. This part is about generations, family, and bonds that are never too late to mend and rebuild, strengthen.
Part 3 – Roots: No more running, Morgan is ready to take her tormentor on when he finally is ready to make his move and it is a romance and you will get your happily ever after.
Overall it is a nice easy read. There is tragedy, romance, strong and supporting families, danger lurking and a happy ending.
Morgan is too busy building her life according to a long term plan to take time for romance. Two jobs, her own home she is rehabbing and Nina, her room mate who is more like her sister, her life is busy and complete. One night while bartending she meets Luke, who is only in town for business. Both know it's a temporary relationship but it feels right and comfortable. Then a few weeks later Morgan returns home between jobs to find Nina dead in what appears to be a robbery gone wrong. If only it were that simple.
I have always enjoyed Nora Roberts' books but for some reason it has been quite a while since I've read one. I"m so glad to be back in the fold. Identity was non-stop action. I fabulously well written page turner. Mystery, romance, resilience and finding your spot in the world, Identity has it all. I loved the characters that make up Morgan's actual family and work family. I highly recommend Identity.
Morgan Albright is a young woman with a dream. She's working two jobs, fixing up a small house, and pinching every penny to save up for her dream of one day owning her own bar. Everything is going great until a handsome IT guy named Luke climbs onto a stool one night and worms his way into her life. While Morgan manages to escape Luke, her roommate isn't so lucky. Not only does he take Nina's life, he takes control of Morgan's identity and steals every penny she has as well as using her identity to wrack up debt in her name.
Having grown up as an Army brat, Morgan's never had roots. When she hits rock bottom she decides to go to her grandma's house and live with her mom and grandmother while she gets her feet back under her. Little could she have known what awaited there for her.
I've always loved Nora Roberts' standalone books like this. They all follow a fairly predictable formula, young woman; warm, loving family; following her passion; growing stronger, more resilient for the demons that chase her; falling in love with the perfect man before finally facing her demons. This one follows a young woman for about two years as she goes through some tragedies and builds her life from scratch, making roots and blooming. The resort where the story takes place is beautiful and everyone lives in amazing historic homes that have deep histories in the families to whom they belong. Most of the people in this book operate or work for a family business that's focused on contributing to the community by providing locals with a steady, sustainable income.
All that being said, there's also this gaspy violence that pops up in the form of Gavin Rozwell, Morgan's would-be killer. His attempts at regrouping as he is falling apart are tough to watch and you can't help but cheer for the insightful FBI agents who are on his trail. He pops up at surprising times and even when you see him coming, he shocks you.
If you're into romantic suspense, especially if you're a Nora Roberts fan, this is a must read.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Family - the one you are born with and the one you choose - is the strongest theme throughout this book. Morgan is relatable and likeable, like all of Nora Roberts's female characters, even though I can't say that I felt the romance this time. Overall, a great read!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
I've been reading Nora Roberts for many years and generally like her stories so I was delighted to get this early read for my honest opinion from NetGalley and St. Martins Publishing Group.
Overall I enjoyed the book. The main character Morgan is a strong woman with a great work ethic and strong goals and she has the foresight and determination to accomplish them. She meets a man at the bar she works at and he impresses her enough she finally takes time from her two jobs and house improvements to go out with him.
Her roommate, Nina encourages Morgan to live a little and they even have a double date dinner for him and Nina’s boyfriend.
Ever hear the saying “too good to be true” would that be Morgan’s new friend Luke? All of her dreams and hard work are destroyed, gone including her best friend Nina. Morgan has to go home to her mom and grandma to start over but start over she will she is strong and capable, but will she open her heart again? One thing hangs over her head as she slowly rebuilds her life, Luke doesn't want to let her get away.
Yes there are flaws in the story, she could have frozen her credit cards and made adjustments to how her name is listed on them and the interpersonal relationships could have been developed more deeply with her new co-workers and friends but overall it was a good read and kept your interest. Also, you will love the mom and grandma plus the new people Morgan meets as she rebuilds her life. The book was very enjoyable. I do recommend Identity by Nora Roberts.
Morgan meets a man she likes and she and her roommate Nina throw their first ever dinner party. The dinner party goes well and everyone is happy. But, things change when their house is broken into and items are stolen. Nina is murdered as well. It turns out that “Luke” who Morgan has been dating is a con artist and murderer. Now, Morgan moves home to live her her “ladies”, her Mom and Grandma. “Luke” is after her as he wanted to kill her and not Nina. Nothing in his life will be right until she is dead.
I loved this books and could not put it down!!!
I’ve wanted to read a Nora Roberts novel for awhile now so thank you netgalley for the opportunity! Identity was a solid story! I love stories with a strong heroine and Morgan does not disappoint. After her best friend is murdered, her life is in turmoil as the only victim of identity fraud that has ever escaped from “Luke”, whom she thought was a potential love interest. She uproots and begins in a new life back home but is constantly followed by the possibility of “Luke” returning. My only critique would be then end was a little predictable but still a good story overall.
I enjoyed the journey that Morgan was on. the story seems well rounded until the ending. I feel it was too rushed although it did encompass all the elements she was preparing for it was just too fast.
Identity was a thrill ride I didn't know I needed. It hàd all the pieces I love in stories and was able to piece them together to create a captivating story. The relationship between Morgan and her ladies is precious. The multi perspective narration was interesting and kept me on my toes throughout.
I love reading books written by Nora Roberts! The characters are described so skilfully and that is what brings you right into the story. I am sorry that the book had to end! Looking forward to more of her books. Thanks for allowing me to read. Recommend!
This was a pretty good book. 4 stars out of 5!
Morgan has a stable life, a home, working 2 jobs, and has a great roommate named Nina. Her life seemed to be going her way until she meets Luke. Morgan and Luke seemed to really hit it off. He was charming until he wasn't. Morgan finds herself losing everything, her home, her car, her roommate, because of Luke. She ends up heading back home to Vermont to live with her Mom and Grandmother. Morgan starts to rebuild her life in Vermont but Luke, from her past, won't go away.
Identity was a beautifully written book that kept me engaged. The book was really long and there was a bit of filler I could have done without. I did think there wasn't a lot of chemistry between Morgan and Miles and that could have been explored better. If you are looking for a book with twists/ turns and suspense you will not be disappointed.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book was a combination of Dirty John and HGTV. The two main characters had absolutely no chemistry. They just slept together at 50% with no build up or tension before that. This book was formulaic Nora and I didn't enjoy it as I have dozens of others of hers
All Morgan ever wanted was a place of her own a house her own bar a stable home. When she waits on Luke he seems so nice. When her roommate and best friend are killed and her identity is stolen Morgan has no choice but to move back home with her mom and grandmother. She is finally settling in with a new job she loves when she finds out that the person that stole her identity is not done yet.
Nora Roberts brings us the story of Morgan and her carefully crafted life nearby Baltimore. Because she moved around a lot as a child, she is determined to follow her life plan of settling down in one place, owning her own home, and working hard. Life is good until one day when everything is destroyed including the death of her friend, her stolen identity, and the knowledge that the murderer was someone she let into her life. Now she has to return home and start all over again. Will this life changing event make her keep running away from life, or will it force her to make decisions that will help her be grounded?
Nora Roberts brings us a story of how to persevere in the face of fear and change. Morgan returns home to live with her mom and grandmother where we learn the root of her determination. We see how life changes for Morgan as she adjusts to what life throws at her. Will Morgan be able to get past all of these changes, or will they just bring her down? You keep turning the page to find out what Morgan will do next. When you are getting close to the end of her story, you want to keep going on while not wanting her story to end. There is plenty of action to keep you going until the end.
I read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this privilege.
Nora Roberts has done it again! I have always been a fan of her stand-alone novels and her latest was no exception. She writes contemporary romance novels but there is always a gritty edge to them that make them thrillers, too. In Identity, Roberts explores the trauma of identity theft.
Morgan Albright is a young woman who is building her future step by step. Through hard work at two jobs, an office worker at a landscaping nursery by day and a bartender at night, she has bought herself a house which she shares with her best friend, Nina. She is planning to renovate the house herself in steps as she saves money. But, after throwing her first dinner party attended by Nina and her boyfriend, and Luke, a charming customer at the bar where she works, her well-planned life falls apart. When she comes home one day, she finds Nina brutally murdered and her house robbed. FBI agents tell her that “Luke” is really Gavin, an identity thief and serial murderer. When she checks her bank accounts she finds they have been wiped out and soon she begins to receive bills for credit cards she never opened. The legal nightmare and her house now tainted by murder force her to sell the house and leave Baltimore to go to Vermont to live with her mother and grandmother. But the nightmare doesn’t end so easily. Gavin is still out there and plans to fix his mistake in killing Nina by killing Morgan.
This was a very easy reading, fast paced book that grabbed my interest right away. The relationship between Morgan and her “Ladies”, her mother and grandmother, was very sweet and her eventual romantic relationship was a slow burn.
If you like Roberts’ books, you will definitely like this. If you’ve never read her books, you’re in for a delightful time since she writes a lot of books. Lucky you!
I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher as an ARC. Thank you, NetGalley for the opportunity to read this advanced copy. This is an honest review.
