Sink or Float is a wonderful STE(A)M book for young kids and part of the Sesame St. Science series. Released 1st Jan 2023 by Lerner Books, it's 32 pages and is available in library binding, paperback, and ebook formats. Lexile measure 470 and aimed mostly at children aged 4-8 (but appealing and full of interesting info for all ages).
Each page shows a familiar Sesame St. character with interactive thought provoking questions for kids. Ernie talks about Rubber Duckie floating and asks readers what toys they have which also float. Cookie Monster discusses materials science (with cookies, of course). Bert shows off his basketball and invites readers to contemplate the relative density of everyday objects. The following pages follow the same format, but invite young readers to form their own opinions about sinking/floating before they turn the page to find out if their hypotheses were correct.
The book is full of colorful clear photographs of muppets and kids thinking and learning about science in a fun and engaging way. Kids are naturally curious and this book utilizes that natural curiosity to help them learn naturally. I liked that the kids pictured are from a range of ethnicities and are both boys and girls, learning and having fun with science.
This would be a superlative gift, excellent classroom or library group selection for activity groups, as well as a wonderful parent/caregiver activity.
Five stars. I loved this one. It's simple but so well done.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This was a great introduction to sinking and floating with my preschooler. He enjoyed the Sesame Street characters, as well as making predictions to what will sink and what will float. He even was able to correctly guess some that he knew once he understood the words better.
This appealing picture book includes familiar characters, authentic photos of students conducting experiments, and easily comprehended principles of density, matter, and bouancy. I enjoyed the illustrations, and the comprehensive information that was written for young primary students. I would highly recommend this for teachers, school librarians, and public librarians.
My kids love Sesame Street and they loved this book we read it and then took some different things to the tub to try it ourselves. Very fun book. I would recommend it to people with curious toddlers.
Thank you to NetGalley for a free copy of Sink or Float by MarieTherese- Miller. With the addition of the Sesame Street characters the author tackles the question of why some objects float and some think. It inspires critical thinking in the preschool/ kindergarten population and is an all around interesting book .Lots of great pictures.Highly recommend..
This is a great science learning book! I love that so many of the Sesame Street characters were included and not just Elmo, Grover, and Big Bird which so often happens. I think the interactive quality is wonderful.

A Sesame Street Science Book
4.5 Stars
What a great way to introduce science to curious kiddos!
I liked how this book engages the readers, and encourages children to get their hands dirty. Read about it in yoyr Sink or Float book, and then try the experiments at home, in your own kitchen. Multi-sensory learning has proven to work well in retaining information. This book uses simple language for pre-school children. The illustrations are colorful and pretty basic and lack creativity. This is where I deducted stars. I definitely recommend teachers, public libraries, and pro-active parents/homeschooling.
Overall, I think this book is awesome! Books like this are a great way to introduce learning in a fun way for kids. Thank you, NetGalley and Lerner Publishing Group, for an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
