I never read the first book of this series, and unfortunately, after reading this, I don't think I will.
Pacing is what makes or breaks a mystery or adventure novel like this. This book did not have good pacing in my opinion. It's super slow up until the 65% mark, and then it's so rushed that you hardly understand the resolution.
This book is the second book in the Izzy and Elton Mystery Series and a perfect continuation of the story. I loved the mystery of it and the story line was pulling in me so I couldn't stop reading.
I can't wait to read book 3 in this series.
I didn’t know this was a second book! I loved it though. It can be a standalone buuut I liked it so much it makes me want to read the first one. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this amazing book.
The second instalment of the Izzy and Elton mysteries follows on from where the last left off, but this time they are in a fictional neighbourhood of London, rather than a fictional Floridan luxe-community.
It was an enjoyable story of a teen-detective, with an interesting take on gentrification, corruption and political terrorism. The twists all made sense and were well set up.
There are a couple of inaccuracies / inconsistencies / complete mis-conceptions/ clangers in the speech written as accents, the description of London and names of the fictional part of the city that really rubbed me up the wrong way. This is a delayed ARC review, so perhaps they were corrected, but I just feel that closer attention could have been paid because they were annoying enough to jerk me out of the story. And calling the posh private school St. Beckham's... That's a nope from me - sorry and thank you.
Graved upon Bones by Chad Alan Gibbs - 4/5
Myster & Thrillers - Teens & YA
Graves upon Bones is the second YA mystery that features Izzy and Elton. Despite them starting over in a new school and area they cannot abandon the need to keep solving mysteries. I love the characters and how strong they are all throughout the story. I look forward to the third installment to see what other mysteries Izzy and Elton find themselves solving.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC.
This is the second book in a series. After solving a decades-old cold case murder and getting expelled from private school, Izzy accepts an invitation to move to England with her best friend, Elton Jones-Davies, and live with his mother in her flat in Graves upon Bones, London’s poshest neighborhood.
I loved the first book, Bardo By the Sea, but found this follow-up less charming. I love Izzy and Elton and their respective love interests. The characters are interesting and well-drawn with believable foibles and traits, but I was less enamored of the actual mystery. I think the story works better when the main characters are more personally involved.
Still I can't wait for the third book in the series to find out what's new with Elton and Izzy.
Thanks to Netgalley for this advance copy. #GravesuponBones #NetGalley
A fun YA crime thriller. I did not read the first book in the series but this was still a fun read. The characters were interesting and the twist made sense. I feel like there were a few loose threads at the of the story but overall a good time!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC! I found this a bit hard to get through, as I just found Izzy really annoying. I could handle it in the first book when she was mostly just messing her own life up, but she took it to another level here. Anyway, I think the first book flowed a lot more, and had less plot holes. I also liked the characters more and felt like I knew them more. Overall, I didn't love it.
When this book popped up on NetGalley I couldn't wait to read it! After loving the first adventure of Izzy and Elton in Bardo By The Sea, I couldn't wait to hear what they had been up to in London and oh my did it not disappoint!
Izzy and Elton as both such interesting characters and are well developed exploring their relationship with each other and others within the story. Izzy's detective work to figure out who did it was a glorious journey of grasping at straws, exaggerating and meddling to get the truth but by god she did it and I was completely in the dark until just before it was revealed.
I honestly cannot wait for the next book in this series and the final lines had me excited for what is to come!
3.5 stars
This was a quick, YA mystery to read. It follows Izzy and Elton as they move to England and find a new long-unsolved mystery to solve. I thought it flowed a lot better than the first book in the series. There were fewer plot holes or loose threads, the twists made more sense, and the characters were fleshed out better. If you enjoy the teenage detectives, you may enjoy this one.
Thank you to NetGalley and Borne Back Books for the opportunity to review this book ahead of publication. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
This is a great series by Chad Alan, I love his books and I was looking forward to this second book of the series.
Izzy and Elton really hold a place in my heart, their friendship reminds me of the childhood xrdships I hold close to my heart.both characters are well return and it makes the reader love them both.. After solving a decades old mystery and stirring up a whole lot of trouble in Florida in the first book in the series, Izzy accepts an invitation from Elton’s mom to join them in London. through out the book you are taken through events in a very realistic manner that makes this book more relatable. I love chad's humour and the references about births culture.
thank you net galley for an opportunity to read this book.
In a follow up to Bardo By the Sea, Izzy and Elton find themselves living abroad in London’s poshest neighborhood Graves upon Bones. Izzy of course finds another murder to solve, embroiling herself and Elton in various forms of danger while seeking the truth.
I adore Izzy and Elton’s friendship and I was so happy to be back in their little world. I didn’t find the killer to be particularly shocking, but I enjoyed the process of getting there regardless. If there’s a third story in this series, I will certainly read it.
I really enjoyed this second in the series of mysteries with Izzy and Elton. The London setting was so fun and I liked learning more about professional football, the sixties music scene and the conflict in Northern Ireland. Gibbs did a good job of weaving it all together with a mystery that kept me guessing until the end. Elton continues to be my favorite with his direct way of seeing the world and funny one-liners. I liked seeing how Izzy has grown and I look forward to seeing what new adventures lie ahead.
Another fun mystery in Gibbs new series. I enjoy the character of Izzy and I feel like the story line was good. It kept my interest and makes me want to see what will happen next! Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thanks to Netgalley and the author/publisher for the ARC. I really love this author's writing style, and I have become hooked on this duo. Book one of the series was fresh and interesting and kept me guessing. I also could not help but love Elton and even Izzy (who makes you cringe with the decisions she makes). The only downsides to this one were it seemed a bit more unrealistic than book 1, and I was not loving how Elton was kind of taken in a different direction in this book. I wanted to see him here as much as I had seen him in book 1, and he was not as involved until more toward the end. You still get the quirky humor and brash words and moves by Izzy, and Elton is still there being Elton and spouting random facts. The other characters are well-developed and woven in well, and I enjoyed the London background. I am definitely interested in book 3 and where it takes the duo and what mystery they will attack next. FYI profanity and violence and talk of sexual situations (mostly in a humorous way)
Izzy manages to continue causing trouble wherever she goes!
After solving a decades-old cold case murder, Izzy is arrested, expelled, and back in the sad Florida trailer park where she’s spent most of her life, But then - an opportunity arises and she accepts an invitation to move to England with her best friend, Elton Jones-Davies, and live with his mother in her flat in Graves upon Bones, London’s poshest neighborhood. Izzy and Elton then open an investigation into the unsolved bombing of a local pub and soon uncover illicit affairs, ties to organized crime, and even terrorist plots.
Sometimes with voice-of-reason Elton by her side, and sometimes not - which only leads Izzy into more trouble! - the well developed characters and interesting mystery made this a fun read. I enjoyed the twists and solid mystery, and the descriptions of London were executed brilliantly.
I didn't read the fist book in this series but i enjoyed this one. Well plotted, gripping, and featuring a couple of interesting teen detective.
I appreciated the realistic MC and the solid mystery. It's a good crime thriller.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
When Chad Alan Gibbs and his publisher were kind enough to share an ARC of this sequel with me, I jumped on the opportunity to immerse myself back in the world of Izzy and Elton. This time around, the story is moved to London where Izzy and Elton attending a prestigious private school. For her school project, Izzy is immediately on the trail of a brand-new mystery. As soon as she hears about the unsolved bombing of The Red Lion in 1989, she is determined to bring the perpetrator to justice, riding high after solving the case in the first novel. Feeling invincible, she starts down a dangerous path, much to Elton's chagrin, which involves mobsters, the IRA, football hooliganism and a huge dose of family scandal...
Gibbs perfectly established the friendship and dynamic between Izzy and Elton in book one, allowing him to build a new world for them in London with a huge array of dastardly characters the reader loves to hate. Whatever tension is introduced for the pair, we are convinced they are platonic soulmates - I loved following their friendship once again. Additionally, the way that Gibbs inserts Graves Upon Bones, Graves United and Lenox Park into the world of London was so convincing that I had a good few minutes of frustrated googling and studying a tube map before I realised most elements, whilst based in truth, are actually fictional!
I commented in my last review that Izzy is the new Pip FItz-Amobi or Stevie Bell. I want to withdraw that comment now as in this second novel, Gibbs is establishing more and more what makes his series unique. Izzy is confident, determined, but flawed which makes her interesting and frustrating to follow in equal measure. The prophetic narration I loved in the first novel is still there, the foreshadowing and hints making me absolutely desperate for novel three - please write quickly :) An easy five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher who provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When I started this book, I didn't realize it was the second book in a series, and although this can be read as a standalone within the first few pages, I knew I wanted to read the first book.
Izzy and Elton are on their way to London. They are best friends and after the events of the last book, Izzy will be staying with Elton and his mother in Graves Upon Bones for the upcoming school season.
When Izzy passes by a pub with a plaque memorializing someone who died in the Red Lion bombing, a crime that was never solved, she knows that this will try and solve it.
This gets Izzy into a lot of trouble, as she travels all over to question people that knew the dead man trying to figure out who would want him dead. Sometimes her friend Elton is by her side, but he has made a new friend and spends a lot of time with her. Usually, he is the voice of reason when Izzy is doing dangerous things and I think Izzy gets a bit out of control with accusing powerful people of murder.
There are quite a few twists and turns and while I had a singular suspect in mind for most of the book, I was completely surprised by who the killer ended up being and how everything ended up playing out. I can't wait to go back and read the first book, and hopefully, there will be more books in the series and see what kind of trouble Izzy will get into next!
Izzy and Elton are back! Izzy accepts an invitation from Elton's mom to move to England and attend an exclusive new private school. Right from the start, the book grabs you and keeps you involved in the story and what is happening with Izzy and Elton, who investigate an unsolved local pub bombing. I like the dynamics between Izzy and Elton; they are great characters.
Graves upon Bones is a solid story, a good mystery, with well-developed characters. It is a well-written book and one I would recommend. I encourage anyone to read the first book in this series to get to know the characters and understand their dynamics.
FYI: Graves upon Bones was set in 2009.
