This is probably my biggest let down so far this year. I almost stopped reading it about 30% in, but decided to stick it out since it seemed like a shorter book. Which that and the location (remote Airbnb cabin) were really all it had going for it. the characters were not likable, there were too many eye-rolling romance scenes, and it wasn’t very believable. It was also extremely predictable.
Oh boy. This book was so bad, just laughably unbelievable, cheesy, and ridiculous. The characters are total caricatures - Grace, the city girl coming to a random place in Wyoming for vacation (yeah, this is totally plausible and believable...) and Calvin, the typical buff, rugged Wyoming cowboy. Until the very, very, end, Grace is a flat character who seems to have nothing wrong with her – Calvin can't stop commenting on her "blue, blue eyes," perfect body, crop tops and tight Daisy Dukes, etc. Yet she's so painfully obtuse - she sees lots of sketchy things happening around her and does absolutely zip to get out of the situation.
The writing was awful. The first half of this book read like a corny and poorly written romance novel - I actually started highlighting phrases that made me cringe. Here are a couple: "She was everything and she was nothing, which made her the perfect amount of something." "Calvin's lips were on mine, and they were hungry, as if he hadn't eaten enough at dinner." Just many strange turns of phrase, heavy-handed metaphors, and unrealistic internal and external dialogue.
And the ending! This is a classic case of a thriller author who thinks up a wacky twist ending that will hopefully make the reader forget all the plot holes in the rest of the book. But knowing what I know now, it only makes the thoughts, actions, dialogue, and errors in the characters' behaviors even more glaringly wrong.
Sorry to be so harsh on this one - it just combined a lot of what I think is going wrong in this genre all into one neat package. Thank you to the publisher for the ARC via Netgalley - wish this one had worked out better for me.
I will keep my review short and sweet. I expected this story to be action packed and thrill me, but it ended up being a really slow burn. A single woman comes to an Airbnb in Wyoming to get away from the busy city life, and ends up becoming heavily involved with the host and life on the ranch. As she learns more about him, she begins to see that things aren’t as they seem and she has put herself in a dangerous situation. There was a good twist at the end of this one, but I was kind of bored getting there.
I was sooo excited to get approved for a netgalley ARC read for this one. It is a book that I had preordered and feel thrilled to have been selected to read it early. I will mention that the ARC kindle copy had some formatting issues that I hope they fix before publication.
It was really good. At first it plays out like en eerie romance book, then slowly turns thriller. It gives us just enough to keep us knowing that the book is a thriller, then ramps up to WTH is going on.
Grace likes to vacation in obscure places. Every year she throws a dart at a map and vacations there. This year her destination is Wyoming. She rents a room at a ranch in the country. Where she meets the handsome owner Calvin. They both bond with each other and have a hard time fighting the attraction between them. When the local Sheriff comes by to ask about a woman that was supposed to room at the ranch, but never showed up, Grace is wondering just who Calvin really is.
We start to really like the MCs. They both say enough suspicious things to get us to know that neither of them are who we think they are. Calvin is a lonely man living on his family ranch, and seems to long for a romantic partner to spend life with at the ranch. But he tells a whole lot of “white” lies that he gets caught for. He also has a terrible friend and family dynamic. Grace is on vacation from her city life, and likes to enjoy new things, but only for a little while. The whole time Grace is there, so many things go wrong. Calvin wants her to decide to stay with him, but Grace is just too good at reading people and she knows there are truths that he is hiding.
I don’t want to say more for fear of spoiling this amazing thriller for you.
I do wish more care was put into formatting this book. It’s so hard to read a book without paragraph indentations or proper spacing. It’s so distracting! But I do appreciate the free early copy.
Jeneva is an auto buy author for me. I love her books! This one was quite unlike her other books. The main character seemed pretty ditzy to me, but I still found myself cheering for her to stay safe.
It’s an excluded location thriller, and what’s not to love about those? I’m definitely afraid of airbnbs now, so that was unexpected! And I’d call that a win!
This was an interesting one. I have mixed reviews of this novel, mainly because it felt very weird at times. Grace instantly gets a bad vibe from the place, and from the host, Calvin. YET, she still trusts him enough, to sleep with him. Like alright then, Grace. Calvin was insanely nice, so you instantly get a bad vibe from him, plus he becomes obsessed.
"She's not going to leave." Yes she will.
There wasn't anything overly twisting throughout the majority of it, just a lot of speculation and random lies. People lie. It just seemed unrealistic.
The ending though, I was so confused, and taken aback, because 1. it was extremely unexpected 2. it didn't completely make sense.
This could just be me, but it wasn't my favourite thriller :(
I adored this book and everything else I’ve read from Jeneva Rose. The twist was wonderful and the book even had a bit of body horror which I thought was an awesome touch. The only thing I would say I didn’t completely love about this book was the slow burn romance feeing of the first half. But I think that is just my personal preference because I don’t really read romance especially not slow burn
Grace is an over-worked New Yorker looking for some time to decompress. She books a secluded room at a AirBnB home in Wyoming. She asked that the owner not have any other guests, so it is just her and the owner at the premises. When she gets there, she is in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, no wifi and her car has just stopped working. Definitely gives off some creepy, beware vibes. Calvin, the home owner and Grace start to have a connection until weird things begin happening: there is a massacre of animals, Grace is attacked by a wild animal, the towns people keep staring at her, Calvin has secrets with his dysfunctional family, and a crazy ex wants you gone because of a one night stand with Calvin. The tension keeps escalating with each incident getting creepier than the last. Each of the characters seem like suspects and now the police have come out because the woman who was supposed to have been there before Grace is missing.
This was quite the wild ride, with lots of suspense as the many curve balls comes to an end. Never saw that ending though! I recommending this to everyone that loves. a good suspenseful thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through!
Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Ms. Rose for giving me the opportunity to review "You Shouldn't Have Come Here." I have never read any of Ms. Rose's works. I found this book hard to review, I found the book slow at first and I had mixed feelings about how believable the characters were. Then about 60 % through the book it became really exciting. When I finished the book I better understood why Ms. Rose wrote the characters the way she did and I found that I really did enjoy the book.
I really enjoyed last year's One of Us is Dead and I was so excited for this book but it ended up being a big disappointment for me! This was SO far fetched, so many plot points did not make sense, I was NOT into a romance/sex scene in a thriller book. And the ending had so many loose ends that didn't make sense.
That ending!!!
Told in dual POVs, this book follows Airbnb host Calvin — who owns a secluded ranch in beautiful Wyoming, fighting deep sadness from recent loss in his family. His guest Grace arrives with secrets of her own, from New York and ready to get away from the city.
This has Jeneva’s signature short chapters that make you want to keep reading. I really liked the tension the book created as you read on — both romantic and more sinister. The ending was shocking, and I can’t stop thinking about it!
Some of the scenes in this book are quite graphic, so fair warning if you’re sensitive to that!! You may want to skip.
I'll be honest, I totally requested this book because I loved the cover and the premise sounded intriguing. Unfortunately the author's writing style just wasn't for me, and I did not connect the the characters or storyline.
I absolutely loved Rose’s previous release, One Of Us Is Dead, so when I was granted an early arc copy of her newest, You Shouldn’t Have Come Here. I was ecstatic! This was quite the ride and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!
The isolated, small town Wyoming setting was perfect for this story. I felt suspicious of both main characters and didn’t quite know what was truly going on which kept me so intrigued. My only complaints would be the animal deaths that seemed to be in abundance but not entirely necessary to the story. I also felt that first half read more like a dark romance and was waiting for more of those thriller vibes but it didn’t deter me from my overall experience, especially once I got to the ending. A lot happened in the last 30% that I’m still processing but the very end and final twist is what made this a 4 star read for me! I loved it!
Overall I absolutely recommend and now will be rushing to read the rest of Rose’s backlist titles! Thank you so much to Netgalley and to Blackstone Publishing for this gifted eARC!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of this book! I absolutely love the narrative building style that Jeneva Rose utilizes. Expose is not cloyingly delivered through poorly disguised monologues, as if characters constantly contextualize their pasts every time they talk to themselves. So many questions in this thriller with tension expertly built as the answers unravel!
I was totally hooked right from the start. This is the first book I've read by the author and I want more. If you're looking for a book that will keep you engaged, this is it. Great story! Thank you, Jeneva Rose and NetGalley for the eARC.
Grace Evans desperately needs a break from her hectic life in NYC so she decides to take a ten-day vacation to an Airbnb ranch in Wyoming. When she arrives the ranch’s owner Calvin Wells greets her. Grace is instantly attracted to Calvin and soon after the two develop a relationship.
Grace is overjoyed to be a part of Calvin’s life but something seems off. Grace soon realizes that some of Calvin’s stories aren’t adding up and then the sheriff alerts her about a missing woman in the area. As Grace’s departure date comes closer, Calvin seems to become more upset over the idea of her leaving, almost to the point of obsession.
This is my third read by Jeneva Rose and let me tell you, I am obsessed! At this point, I will read anything and everything she writes. Every book that she writes is better than the last!
The main character in You Shouldn’t Have Come Here, Grace, was phenomenal! I love how Jeneva Rose writes her female main characters so dimensional that after reading, I feel like I know them personally. It’s been a while since I finished a book in less than 24 hours but I truly could not put You Shouldn’t Have Come Here down. The ending on this one is everything! I literally had to pick my jaw up off the floor after finishing it.
You Shouldn’t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose
will be available on April 25. A massive thanks to Blackstone publishing and Netgalley for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for this book You Shouldn’t Have Come Here in exchange for my honest review.
Unfortunately, I was highly disappointed with this book from the beginning. I couldn’t get into the writing style or the story at all. As I have loved every book I’ve read by this author, the fact that I didn’t like this book is very disheartening for me. I won’t stop reading her books just because of one, though.
Absolutely loved this wild ride of a book! Jeneva Rose is an auto-read author for me, so when I hear about "You Shouldn't Have Come Here," I could not wait to devour it. I love a good thriller that keeps you guessing and this book did just that. Up until the last page my mind was blown! The ending is so creepy, but so good!
This is a slow burn, and I mean slooooooow burn. It took until about 70% ish to get kind of entertaining. The twist is a very good twist but again, took way to long to get to where it was going. I enjoyed the perfect marriage so much so had high hopes and they sadly were not met by this one.

Grace Evans is in need of a vacation so she books an air b&b in Wyoming by randomly throwing a dart at a map. Her host Calvin welcomes her into his home with open arms. Shortly after Grace is in town, she starts to feel uneasy. Strange things begin to happen to her, family secrets are revealed and there even is a missing girl who disappeared about 3 weeks before her stay.
I have to start off by saying that The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose was truly one of my favorite books I read in 2022, so when I got approved on netgalley for this one, I was jumping with excitement! Unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me 😩. I feel terrible even saying that because I love this author but I have to give an honest review. I felt like this book was very repetitive and one of the most misplaced endings of a book I have ever read. I found the author continuing to make analogies so often that it made me cringe at times. As far as a thriller, there definitely were some things that I was not expecting.
For the things I enjoyed: I love a fast paced book around 300 pages with multiple POVS and short chapters. I think I just went into this one with such high hopes it just didn’t hit as well as I wished for.
I would start off with the Perfect Marriage if you haven’t read any of her books! If you do read this one, I am so curious of what you thought / think, because I’m wondering if I’m critiquing it too harshly?! 😖
