You Shouldn't Have Come Here

Rating: 4 Stars

This book gave me Bates Motel Vibes! I loved how it started with a romance feel. Grace is just looking for a relaxing vacation far away from the city so she throws a dart at a map and ends up in Wyoming in the middle of no where. The Airbnb that she is staying at is owned by a handsome rancher who promises to take care of her for 10 days and give her the relaxing vacation she deserves. Hence the close proximity romance feel. However, I knew from the beginning that it was a thriller so it had me biting my nails and not being able to put it down. I had no idea who the bad guy was. This was my first Jeneva Rose book and definitely won't be my last!

I could not put this book down! I finished it in one sitting. From the beginning, the side characters and setting are creepy and just not quite right. I couldn't decide who was telling the truth or who was spinning lies. I loved the format of counting down the days of vacation left and the alternating point of views of Calvin and Grace. I can honestly say I was blown away by the ending and not expecting all of the twists and turns. I'm itching to read the next book Jeneva Rose presents us with! If you don't have this on your TBR, add it now and enjoy it when it is published in April 2023!

Thank you to NetGalley, Blackstone Published and Jeneva Rose for my ARC in exchange for my review!

This was really different! I’m honestly not even really sure what genre this book falls into.. it gave romance (creepy romance) and thriller all in one. I did find the first half of the book to be a little slow but I also loved that I had zero idea where it was headed. It got pretty dark at the end and the isolated setting throughout was really unnerving. The characters were also extremely unlikeable but I think that actually added to the suspense and storyline.

Jeneva Rose writes really fun, unique stories that I would classify as new age thrillers. This one was really fast paced, kept me guessing and delivered a shocking ending. I also think it would make a great bookclub pick!

You Shouldn’t have Come Here
By Jeneva Rose

Review

This is the first book I’ve read by Mrs. Rose and definitely won’t be the last. I’ma about to binge all her other books. This story snags your attention from the start and takes you on a roller coaster of spooky emotions. The story follows Grace a city slicker on vacay meet’s Calvin AirBnB host/rancher in a secluded ranch in Wyoming. Grace quickly finds out there isn’t cellphone service, no Wi-Fi, and vehicle problems. Then Mrs. Rose sprinkles the creepiest bunch of characters in the mix who all are shady as f*ck with hidden agendas. This book has plenty of twist & turns with a bit of romance.

You Shouldn't Have Come Here is the airbnb thriller by best-selling author, Jeneva Rose. At the risk of sounding a little like Scott, I found myself somewhat underwhelmed by this book.

I struggled to hate the characters and the characters I did hate were the ones who were completely innocent (I think?) and although that did get me questioning ALL the characters with much distrust and trying to figure out which one was the bad guy, I didn't really even know WHY I was trying to find a bad guy in the book in the first place. It was a little over 1/3 of the way through the book before anything came up that would cause any real suspicion. The author did a great job of adding some creepy events that served as a little potential foreshadowing and definitely served the vibes for a thriller. The dual POV of the two main characters served the set some tension and chemistry for a potential romance but it was built on distrust and I just couldn't allow myself to 'ship them. I somewhat wanted it but everything in me knew it was a bad idea from the beginning. I think for the reason the ending (no spoilers here) was not as satisfying as it could have been. because I am not sure if there was any real win or victory in the end. It does however give some angry feminist vibes and I would be here for that if I felt like there was more of a clear reason for her rage rather than a sense of deviance for the sake of deviance. Overall, it was a fun read but I had all sorts of feels about it when I finished reading.

Thank you NetGalley, Blackstone Publishing, and author Jeneva Rose for an ARC of You Shouldn't Have Come here.

The setting of the book was not what I'd call "original." Far too many thrillers begin with a single woman who vacations to some desolate place on the map. Usually she's wearing heels and clothes that are too expensive. She is "out of her element" in all regards. You know how it goes: "Women around these parts can't afford ______" or "women around these parts wouldn't wear that outfit." The AirBnB part of the setting is original and new as well as timely, but as soon as I realized that this is the typical city-girl-meets-country-boy type of thriller, I rolled my eyes quite hard.

A hallmark of Jeneva Rose's books is her inability to skillfully use literary devices. Rose's analogies and similes are terrible to the point that they're comical. An example of this is when MFC Grace Evans has a lump in her throat, and Rose writes, "Joe's [MMC} presence was like Miracle Grow for the lump." Are we supposed to take this seriously? Another is when Joe compares Grace to meat: "...the heart of a medium-rare steak." That is not sexy. It's not anything other than gibberish, actually.

Another hallmark is that Jeneva's sex scenes read more like an instruction manual than smut. When describing Grace and Joe's sexual encounter, the language was, "She orgasmed more than once." Maybe consider adding a bit more detail? Nothing about that is a turn on.

This is the second one-star read for me by Jeneva Rose. I quit after this!

You Shouldn't Have Come Here is told from the dual POVs of Grace and Calvin. Grace is an Airbnb guest staying at Calvin's place in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. During the course of Grace's stay, Grace and Calvin start to develop feelings for each other. But as weird things start to happen, Grace doesn't know who to trust.

This was a quick read that I really wanted to like but just didn't quite work for me. The main things that I struggled with were the writing and a lack of suspense.

First off, the writing. At times it felt a bit simplistic. The author would always describe what the characters were wearing as "_____ was wearing this, this and that." There was little variation or complexity in how details were relayed. Then there were things that stylistically took me out of the story. For one, Grace's blue, blue eyes. This was clearly a stylistic choice, but by the end, seeing that phrase every chapter irritated me.

The other detractor for me was what I felt was a lack of suspense. It never really felt high stakes to me until the very end. The occurrences that rubbed Grace the wrong way always seemed minor and coincidental to me. The first half+ read more like a romance and that was not entirely what I wanted or expected of the novel.

I've seen a lot of rave reviews for this one, so I seem to be in the minority. I'm sure this one will find fans among many thriller readers. I'm sorry this one didn't work for me but would still be interested in reading future works from this author.

Holy smokes! This was like a twisty, dark roller coaster ride! I couldn't put it down, and stayed up way too late reading it! We'll be carrying this in our store for sure! I'm also planning on including it in our store subscription boxes for customers that request thrillers!

Every year Grace throws a dart at the map and goes where it takes her. This year she is vacationing in Wyoming and staying at an airbnb run my Calvin. Immediately she is worried about the lack of cell phone service or wifi, but she is trying to relax from normal life so she goes with it. Some strange things are happening on this farm however…

Ok, you know those books where you want to smack the main character for being an idiot for like 90% of the book? That’s this book! I wanted to shake Grace and be like girl, wtf are you still doing at this house? I went back and forth on whether there was something up with Grace, or something up with Calvin, or even both. There were points when both seemed off and I couldn’t figure out who the bad guy was going to be here! Everything comes to make sense in the end, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride!

I am a HUGE fan of Jeneva Rose, and her newest book did not disappoint. She has you on the edge of your seat until the end, where she twists the entire story upside down. The only minor disappointment I had was I felt the ending was rushed, I think had the author spent a little more time laying it all out at the end it would have been a solid 5 star!

I was so excited to finally read a Jeneva Rose book, as I have heard so many good things about them. Well, this one unfortunately did not live up to the hype. The premise was intriguing. Grace retreats to a secluded Airbnb only to find that something is amiss. While she has this attraction for the owner, Calvin, she is also extremely leery of him. As her vacation draws to end, tensions start to rise.

While I enjoyed the story line, the short chapters, and the dual POV's. I did not enjoy the writing. It felt amateur at best and the story just plugged along. I found Grace to be annoying as she made horrible choices page after page. Regrettably, I was not invested in these characters. I found I did not care what happened to them and the ending of the book was completely underwhelming for me.

I've seen a lot of great reviews for this one, so if you enjoy a cozy mystery, give it a shot. I do plan to try The Perfect Marriage by this author, in hopes she can redeem herself.

Will start by saying that I have loved previous books by this author and absolutely adore her and her writing style..

The author, book cover and synopsis drew me in and requested right away - so once again thank you for the opportunity.

This one however fell flat for me.
I definitely enjoyed some parts and twists I didn’t see coming. I’ll always recommend Jeneva and her books - I think most would probably enjoy this one. I just really enjoyed the perfect marriage and one of us is dead more.

Grace Evans, an overworked New Yorker looking for a total escape from her busy life, books an Airbnb on a ranch in the middle of Wyoming. When she arrives at the idyllic getaway, she’s pleased to find that the owner is a handsome man by the name of Calvin Wells—and he’s eager to introduce her to his easygoing way of life. But there are things Grace discovers that she’s not too pleased about: A lack of cell phone service. A missing woman. And a feeling that something isn’t right with the ranch. Despite her uneasiness, the two bond and start to fall for one another. However, as her departure date nears, things change for the worse. What began as a playful romance soon turns into a complicated web of lies. Grace grows wary of Calvin as his infatuation for her seems to have morphed to obsession. Calvin fears that Grace is hiding something from him—including her reason for staying at his ranch to begin with. Vacation flings typically end in heartbreak, but for Grace and Calvin, it’ll be far more destructive.

Wow, IDK where to start! I read this in one sitting because I just needed to know what happened. I've loved all of Jeneva Rose's past books, so I was hyped for this one. I'd classify this the slow burn of thrillers. For the most part this wasn't too suspenseful. It was just a romance but with a few off moments that built and built. Eventually everything exploded. I loved the wildlife backdrop and this opposites attract type story. I don't read a ton of thrillers but this one felt a little more graphic/gory than I expected.

The reason I didn't rate this higher was the romance felt a little corny and the big plot twist/turning point was so far towards the end. It also felt like everything and anything she could think of to go wrong was gonna go wrong. I didn't think it needed that much dramatics. Lastly I wish Grace Evans had a better motive than `spoiler alter` "I'm a psychopath" I wish it would have been some kind of feminist vigilante manifesto or something.

Overall I'd give this a 3.5. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review.

One of my favorite thrillers I’ve read in a while! It was fast paced and kept the anticipation building the entire time. Lists of fun and exciting twists that kept it interesting.

Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I did not read the description of this book. The only thing I knew about it before reading was its genre. As you can imagine, my expectations were pretty basic; I assumed I would get some heart pumping, hair-raising, good ol’ murders and fun. Oh boy, this book was NOT IT. At 50%, still nothing had happened or been revealed. The author also seemed to be a bit genre confused, and I kept contemplating whether I was actually reading a thriller or a slow burn romance with an obnoxious love triangle. I guessed so much of the plot it’s not even funny. Finally, I cannot take anyone named Sheriff Almond seriously.

My thoughts summed up in three emojis: 😴🥴😑

Thank you Blackstone Publishing for my free ebook!

I love Jeneva Rose's writing style -- I never want to put her books down and You Shouldn't Come Here had that same feel. There are two different perspectives throughout this novel, and you will never guess the final twist at the end.

My only critique is that a lot happens in the final 10% of the book. The build up was a bit longer than it needed to be, in my opinion.

As no surprise to anyone, this book was bananas (B A N A N A S) 🤯 Huge thanks goes to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for an advanced e-copy of Drew’s wife’s new book!

While this book was absolutely crazy, I could also describe it as frustrating (in a good way.) Multiple times I was like “WTF is going on??” and just when I thought one thing was going to happen, something else would. The whole time I was reading I had so many questions about Grace, Calvin, the ranch, and the whole town of Dubois but in the end all was revealed during a very bonkers and shocking ending. It was, quite literally, a rollercoaster of emotions. 🎢

If you’re a Jeneva fan or just love a good twisted suspense story, this is for you!

Oy. I don’t know what to say about this book.

The last five percent was the only part I really liked about this book. And the fact that it read quickly. (Or I skimmed it so it seemed fast…)

The writing was bland. The dialogue didn’t feel real. I don’t need steamy scenes in thrillers. Everything just felt predictable to me. I really really wanted to like this one more.
