I don't think I'd read anything set in Botswana before so it was really cool to explore this collection over time. I fell out of love with one of the stories in the middle, which made me put aside the volume when I now wish I'd pushed through. I learned a lot about social norms and the differences of expectations between women and men. I really likes Moeng's writing style and think the contemporary "slice of life" energy of thes stories will definitely appeal to people who like quiet and subtle stories.
This is a short story collection set in Botswana. It is a very solid collection. The stories are entertaining and thought provoking. Well written.
'Call and Response' by Gothataone Moeng is a collection of short stories featuring woman living and working in Botswana. The attraction to me was to learn more about a culture that I know nothing about, but what I learnt - and Moeng excellently conveys - is that certain experiences are universal with the place you are adding colour rather than narrative.
This is very much a collection of stories that's worth picking up. I couldn't tell you exactly what I've learned through reading but I'm happy that I was able to learn about the different woman contained within Moeng's perspective.
Amazing read!
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book.
I loved Call and Response, after I read the first story, I thought the rest would be slightly autobiographical accounts, but the stories are so different and diverse I have changed my mind. The stories are well written in an unpretentious and real style. Each is told from the perspective of a different woman, and as a whole they give you a very readable picture of modern life in Botswana. I already have a list in my head of people who would love it when it comes out.
