Thank you to Net Galley for the advance ecopy of this book. Meribel. a TV actress, moves herself and her daughter back to Atlanta from California in the wake of being stalked. She is working hard to establish a normal life while always keeping an eye out for dangerous mail and/or events. She makes a good friend who may turn into a romantic attachment, and her daughter seems to be adjusting. Then, the stalking ramps up. This story takes many twists and turns, and the question right up to the bitter end is, "who is the real danger?" Suspenseful, without provoking anxiety. Highly recommend!
I was SO, SO, SO excited to receive this ARC, as I love this author, and I must say, the excitement was worth it! This is just a good ol' creepy stalker story with a lot of surprises thrown in. It does require a little suspension of belief, but just go with it. This is a fun read with a sense of foreboding throughout. I liked Meribel's character, but really enjoyed reading from Honor's POV. Honor is Meribel's autistic daughter. I learned a new word.... fungible. Had to Google it! The only thing I could say negative is that I would have really enjoyed an Epilogue. The book just ended. I was happy with the ending, it just would have been nice to have a "what happens later" kind of thing, but that's just me. I think I got a little too attached and just wanted more. I can't recommend this one enough if you want a good, fast-paced thriller with interesting characters!
Thank you to #NetGalley, Joshilyn Jackson and William Morrow for this ARC.
This is the third novel I have read by Joshilyn Jackson and it did not disappoint. A fast paced thriller that throws you right into the story from the first page.
Actress Meribel Mills has a stalker who seems to be completely unhinged and escalating. She moves from her home in LA to Atlanta to take a role and hopefully start over. But the letters don't stop and she can't shake the feeling she is being watched. Could it be her ex husband? Is it her neighbor who she has just befriended? Could it be her ex boyfriend who always protected her?
With 2 villains and lots of action, this novel kept me hooked from page 1! Many thanks to Netgalley and William Morrow for the ARC.
Meribel Mills is a moderately successful Hollywood actress who is forced to move to Atlanta with her daughter to escape a very creepy stalker who she has never been able to identify. Did he follow her across the country or has she become completely paranoid, imagining danger where none exists.
I am a HUGE fan of Joshilyn Jackson and was really looking forward to this book. But as one reviewer noted, I had to check the cover to make sure this really was one of her books because it seemed so different from her previous novels. The characters were not particularly likeable, with the exception of Meribel's daughter, and the ending seemed very abrupt. Unlikeable characters seem to be in vogue now, so I may very well be in the minority on this issue. Although this book didn't really work for me, I'm still really looking forward to the next one!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was awful in just so many ways. While I thought it started off well, it veered into way too many ridiculous pilots, none which seemed cohesive. At times I found myself actually laughing at how ridiculous this book was. Do not recommend
first of all thank you to William Morrow bc they literally never approve me for anything so i was shocked to get this one
but yeah sadly this one was a stinker (read: dumb AF). reading thrillers always requires a certain suspension of disbelief, but damn Ms Jackson (if you’re nasty) threw it right out the window into the next country. a little too many coincidences used as convenient red herrings for my liking…
also girlie expects us to believe THAT many people still recognize an actress whose only notable role is a side character from a ‘90s sitcom in plainclothes on the street? not to mention said main character is about as interesting as stale bread to follow. and i literally LOL’d at one of the ‘big finale moments’ bc of how absurd it was.
trying to think of positives….uhhh….i really liked the character of Honor….
Wow, there's a lot going on in this book. Two villains, two climaxes happening simultaneously, multiple red herrings, a few twists I saw coming and one I didn't. It feels like the author has crammed at least three novels, possibly more, into one, and the effect is very . . . busy.
Meribel Mills is a C-list celebrity -- famous enough to have a stalker, but not famous or wealthy enough to have a security team or a gated compound. When her stalker in LA gets too close for comfort, she makes the odd choice to move to Georgia, as if that will somehow protect her. This is the whole basis of the book, but it doesn't make any sense -- she's an actress, and she has a part on a new show, and social media and Entertainment Tonight are a thing, so it's not like her move is going to keep her stalker away from her. She gets a couple of weeks of peace before the guy realizes she's moved and follows her. Duh. Who didn't see that coming?
Then we meet A) the neighbor down the hall, B) the ex-husband, and C) the new boyfriend, all of whom are suspicious in their own ways. But more importantly, they are also characters in three different novels that are all happening here at the same time. Neighbor Dude seems great at first but turns out to be starring in his own thriller. Ex-husband and Meribel are having a small Lifetime movie on the side, and New Boyfriend is Brooding, Tough, Mysterious, blah blah blah -- clearly the hero in a Jack Reacher movie or something. It's a lot to keep up with.
Oh, we also have Homeless Girl, Daughter with Autism, Surly Teenage Neighbor, and Surly Neighbor Mom. Not to mention the stalker, who we haven't even met yet. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.
The book held my interest and was a quick read, but the characters are one-dimensional and/or eye-rollingly ridiculous. Neighbor Dude's backstory is completely ludicrous, and we never learn what made Stalker Guy latch on to Meribel to begin with, or how he had the means or the wherewithal to follow her across the country. He doesn't come across as dangerous -- just sad and not very threatening. The ex doesn't even need to be there -- that whole side story adds nothing to the book. And Neighbor Dude and Homeless Girl really should have their own book.
All of this would be forgivable, though, if it weren't for the ending. It just . . . stops. The climax happens, we know everyone is safe, and four sentences later, it's over. Can we at least get an epilogue?! It was like the author reached a word limit and said "Nope. That's it. Can't write one more word."
The first Joshilyn Jackson book I read was Almost Sisters, and I loved it. Nothing else of hers has quite lived up to that one. I'll continue reading her stuff, though, in hopes of finding one that does
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have read all of Ms Jackson’s novels to date. Did not feel that this book had enough depth of character or interesting plot. I was disappointed.
I enjoyed this book but I didn't love it. I've read two other Jackson novels (Mother May I and Almost Sisters) and liked both of those much more. This one held my interest and I wanted to know what happened/ whodunnit. I thought the autistic character was very well-written and believable. And I always appreciate a book that's set in the south but doesn't lean in heavy on southern stereotypes.
There is a twist in book that I didn't see coming, doesn't have a lot to do with the main plot, and I'm not sure why it was necessary. It ties a bit character more into the story but overall just felt . . . reaching. The "whodunnit" as far as the stalker did surprise me, mostly because I expected it to be more hashed out. The ending just felt very rushed and I expected more out of it.
With My Little Eye starts out as a "woman in peril" thriller but strong characterization elevates the book above its genre. "I never thought I was famous enough to get murdered." B-level actress Meribel Mills has a stalker whose letters have become violent, with depictions of dismembered body parts to demonstrate his intentions. When she has a chance to move from LA to her home town of Atlanta to film a new TV series, she hopes she has escaped "Marker Man."
Meribel has enough on her plate without that threat. Her daughter Honor requires special care to manage her autism, and Meribel is uncomfortably aware that she is living in the same city as her ex-husband, with whom she has a complicated history. She is also dealing with hostility from her neighbor who thinks Meribel has designs on her ex-boyfriend, and Meribel's own ex back in LA is urging her to give him another shot. But when she gets a letter from Marker Man at her new apartment, she realizes she is still very much in danger.
I am not a fan of the "crazed lunatic stalker" plot, but Jackson keeps you guessing about the identity of the bad dude, serving up several red herrings. Meribel realizes the irony of working in a profession that requires her to use whatever means necessary to keep looking youthful, so she can play a woman who is "sex murdered," even as she is doing everything she can to avoid that fate in real life. When she is finally face to face with Marker Man, she realizes that, although real life is not like television, she might have learned a few tips of the trade that could save her life.
Meribel's 12 year old daughter Honor has her own character arc. Her unlikely friendships with a homeless girl and a rebellious teen lead her on an unexpected journey that requires her to be as heroic as the paladins in her online Dungeons and Dragons games. My favorite chapters are the ones told from Honor's point of view. Her description of the way she perceives the world and how it feels physically to be overstimulated to the point of meltdown are very evocative. I don't know if Jackson knows people with autism or if she did a lot of research, but Honor feels very authentic even if she's not an "own voices" character.
I've already devoted too much time in previous reviews to my disappointment about Joshilyn Jackson's transformation from southern women's fiction to suspense thrillers, so I'll shut up and accept what I cannot change. FWIW, I think this is stronger than the other two Jackson books I have read since she switched genres (Never Have I Ever, and Mother May I).
ARC received from Net Galley in exchange for objective review.
Marker Man was a little too "Erika Ford" (Brooke Shields in Friends) for me......
Parts of this read like a soap opera, and then other parts read like a Law and Order: SVU episode that I've seen 200 times.
To quote Pete Campbell, "Not great, Bob!"
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The twists and turns in this one! Kept me on turning the pages and on the edge of my seat. Highly recommend. Joshilyn Jackson is a new fav.
Actress Mirabel leaves Hollywood to start in a new town with her daughter, and to escape her stalker whose notes are escalating. In her new town, she can feel eyes watching her. Is it her stalker?
Another great, unputdownable entertainer from Joshilyn Jackson! She sure knows how to draw a reader in from the first to last page. I loved the teenagers in the story and their plot line. I enjoyed how there were several contenders for “bad guy”, but we don’t know until the end who is for real and who has bad intentions.
“I wasn’t good at patience, but my whole life was now reduced to waiting. He was the watcher. He had the power. The watcher always had the power.”
With My Little Eye comes out 4/25.
This was a quick read for me. I found it suspenseful and I kept trying to figure out who the stalker was. I liked the main character and her interactions with her daughter, who is on the autism spectrum. I did find the ending surprising and slightly disappointing due to several unanswered questions.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy of this book. This was a wonderful mystery! I will be looking for more books by this author. I enjoyed this one alot and will definitely recommend. Not my favorite style of writing but I enjoyed the characters and plot.
I really enjoyed this one butttt the ending was a bit disappointing. It was mostly buildup with a very quick conclusion. There were some red herrings and it was fun to see if I could tell who the stalker was, but the reveal was a let down, I did find myself thinking about the characters when not reading. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable read.
This was definitely a 5 star read for me. I was so caught up in the action that I continued to turn the pages until way past bedtime. I enjoyed the characters and the descriptions of Honor’s neurodivergence.
I enjoyed the collision of the story lines toward the end and could not even think to look away. Five full stars!!!!
Joshilyn Jackson’s mysteries are always good so I was excited to read her newest, With My Little Eye.
Meribel Mills is an aging actress and a single mother. When threatening letters from a stalker escalate, she moves across the country with her daughter in the hope of escaping him. Named for his use of scented markers in his threatening letters, Marker Man is not giving up that easily.
Honor, the daughter, was a beautifully written character who is on the spectrum. The mother/daughter bond and the lengths a mother will go to protect were believable. Honor’s interaction with neighbors and friends added a heartwarming element to the story. An engaging read that kept me guessing the identity of the stalker. The final reveal came a little out of nowhere but the conclusion is exciting.
A little romance, a little mystery and a quick read. Thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for the opportunity to review this title before its release.
Thank you kindly to NetGalley and William-Morrow Books for the eARC!
I loved Jackson’s prose throughout this novel! Her writing style is always intriguing.
The prologue kicked things off in a super engaging way, but the early change over to the stalker’s POV threw me for a minute and then the pacing felt off from there on. Definitely an enjoyable read, but felt like it was missing something too…

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow.
Actress Meribel Mills achieved her fame as a teen actor - now at mid-life, her roles are becoming limited. Meribel leaves Los Angeles for her native Atlanta due to a stalker. A stalker who sends her disturbing letters using fruit scented markers. He broke into her home and the letters are becoming more disturbing - it was time to run. Who is Meribel's stalker? The neighbor? Her now ex-boyfriend? Her ex-husband? A stranger?
I've been all over the place with this novel, from enjoying it to rolling my eyes. Meribel gave me heartburn due to her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Cam. She's being stalked yet develops these relationships with men whose backgrounds she has no knowledge of. She's attempting to escape a stalker yet takes an acting job. The reader is given little information/background on Maribel's stalker and why he chose her. Daughter Honor was absolutely delightful, probably the best character in the novel, with her side stories being some of the most entertaining.
Overall, an enjoyable read if you can put aside some of the implausibility. Plenty of twists and turns - and several potential candidates for the stalker - kept it at a 3 star read for me.
