I have to admit, this is one of the books I find hard to rate fairly. There are so many things I enjoyed about it during my reading, including the dangerous fan/stalker plotline, the mystery that kept me guessing about the identity of the culprit, and the author's well-executed twists that took me by surprise. I was also impressed by the brilliantly developed character of Honor, a 13-year-old adopted daughter of Meribel who is on the spectrum. Her interesting relationship with Sheila and the homeless girl she calls Princess Xena was a highlight for me.
However, there were also some parts of the book that had a telenovela style, with male characters competing for Meribel's attention, which made me roll my eyes. I also found myself getting irritated spending so much time inside the heads of psychologically damaged men, and the abrupt ending earned even more eye rolls. I was left wanting an epilogue or at least one more chapter to wrap up the characters' lives.
I went back and forth between giving it three or four stars, even though I was expecting to write a five-star review based on the book's description and the author's previous works. The high-quality parts of the book outweighed the parts that irritated me, and I ultimately rounded up my rating to 4 stars.
The plot was intriguing and captivating, beginning with Meribel Mills, a B-list actress, who is raising her nearly 13-year-old daughter Honor while dealing with her stalker, the "Marker Man." Meribel is offered a role as a lawyer/ghost defender, which she initially resists because it requires her to move to Atlanta, where she is from and left her ex-husband decades ago. However, when the Marker Man starts to escalate his behavior, she decides to take the job and move to Atlanta. She quickly befriends her neighbor Cooper and becomes involved in a complicated relationship with him, as well as her ex-husband and ex-boyfriend/bodyguard Cam.
Overall, this was a great psychological read that kept me on my toes, but I wish it had a more satisfying ending.
Special thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for providing me with a digital review copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
*Many thanks to William Morrow Publishing, Custom House, Netgalley, and Joshilyn Jackson for my gifted eARC for an honest review*
What would you do of you had a stalker? Actress Meribel Mills starts getting creepy letters and nasty scary drawings from her stalker that she has nicknamed Marker Man. Meribel moves her and her autistic daughter Honer half way across the US to get away from Marker Man. Meribel finally thinks she has gotten rid of him but then she gets a package at her new house from him.
This was a fast-paced roller-coaster of a thriller. It was told by multiple POV'S so you never know who to trust. The ending had a huge good buildup and then just ended, I wish there would have been an epilogue. This is my first book by Joshilyn and definitely will not be my last.
****This book has some very disturbing scenes in it, not for the faint of heart****
I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It had been a long time since a thriller has kept me guessing, got my heart pounding, made my eyes open wide, and kept me from putting it down! Having read the 2 previous titles by Jackson (Never Have I Ever & Mother May I), I can say she gets better with each story..Each one I like better than the other.
In this story, Maribel Mills is an almost 40 year old actress, that hit it big on a whim, after leaving her small town behind. She is now the recipient of undesirable fan mail The letters are creepy with marker bleeding through the paper, showing her in pieces. Due to them, she takes a job on the other side of the country, breaking all ties. nIt also brings her back to her hometown and regret of what could have been. At first, you begin to think "another stalking style mystery." OH NO! There is much more going on...many twists and side/background stories going on here. She adopted a daughter, who is autistic, begins to befriend the neighbor, who has his own issues with his on again/off again romance, as well as she left a lover & reliable best friends behind. The story will weave different character perspectives and being inside the brain of the stalker was creepy. But "Marker Man" is on the move, following Maribel. Readers will be kept intrigued and enjoy the reveal. Though the ending may seem abrupt, it can also be seen as leaving the reader with the finale and rather continue to wrap up the aftermath. 4 1/2 stars
I was provided an advanced copy from Netgalley to provide an honest review.
This is the second book I've read by Joshilyn Jackson. The first being Mother, May I. This thriller had some unexpected twists for sure! I can usually see them coming, but I was honestly surprised by this one. I really don't want to give anything away. This is not your typical "famous woman vs stalker" storyline. Also, as a mother of a child on the spectrum, I appreciated the portrayal of the main protagonist's daughter. She was smart, witty, and relatable.
I enjoyed the multiple perspectives in this story, as well. I highly recommend this thriller.
I have so much love for Joshilyn Jackson, but this was my least favorite of her books. It is definitely suspenseful, and readers will be on edge as they try to find out who the main character's stalker is, and how much danger she and her daughter are truly in. This is a fast paced mystery and I do think people will enjoy it. My own review is tampered merely because Jackson's other books are (in my opinion) much more complex and compelling. I will always carry her books in our store, and can't wait to get customer feedback from this one!
Just when I think Joshilyn Jackson cannot possible top her last book, she comes out with a thriller like With My Little Eye. An excellent choice for solo readers or the discerning book group crowd!
This was a bot too creepy for me. I usually love her books so this was a one-off. Hopefully I enjoy future books by the author.
A tense nail-biter that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page! Fans of Jackson's last two suspense novels will not be disappointed.
Fast-paced and entertaining - will please fans of Jackson's previous titles. A recommended purchase for collections where thrillers are popular.
I always enjoy books by Joshilyn Jackson. Her earlier books were women’s fiction and the recent ones have shifted to suspenseful thrillers.
With My Little Eye is the story of Meribel and her daughter Honor who just moved across the country to escape Meribel’s stalker. Only once settled, letters start appearing again.
It took me a little to get into the story, mainly at the beginning both of the main male characters seemed sketchy and had names starting with a C-
Thank you to #netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoyed Jackson’s recent books or thrillers by Mary Kubica, Megan Miranda, and Clare Mackintosh.
Telling Tuesday…
What does this book tell you?
I will say that for me, it left me in a tizzy. I was completely frantic while flipping the pages. I’m not sure how I survived holding my breath throughout this entire book! My pulse rapidly pulsed throughout my body. I was completely consumed as the words glittered gracefully across the pages.
When you love thrillers as much as I do, you would think I would get used to this feeling.
I don’t..
Suspense? Check. Thrilling? Check. Mind blowing twist? You betcha!
Joshilyn Jackson, you never seem to amaze me.
With My Little Eye
Teaser :
It started with the letters…
For actress Meribel Mills, disturbing fan mail is part of the price of fame. So when she starts getting creepy letters written in fruit-scented marker she is mostly unphased and diligently files them along with her other messages from unhinged fans. After all, she’s a single mom approaching forty, not the kind of hot young celeb who sparks dangerous obsessions. But there’s something different about Marker Man…
He’s been in her home…
Meribel’s sheets smell of unfamiliar cologne, and objects have gone missing around the house. Plus, the letters have become more perverse, with drawings of a naked Meribel tied up or chopped into pieces. While the police insist that stalkers hardly ever escalate to violence, Meribel has played the dead girl one too many times on TV to risk becoming her in real life. She and her daughter move from Los Angeles to Atlanta for a fresh start—but no distance is great enough.
He’s watching her…
Years of being in front of a camera have given Meribel a superpower—she can feel eyes on her, a creeping sensation like bees inside her skin. And someone definitely has her in their sights. Could Marker Man have followed her all the way across the country?
Who else might be watching—her ex-husband? The lover she left behind in LA? Her new neighbor? Suddenly, every man in her life is a suspect, but she can’t keep herself and her daughter safe from a monster she can’t identify. When the paths of all of these men collide, Meribel will find herself alone in the fight of her life, desperate to protect those she loves as danger closes in from all sides.
If he can't have her, no one can.
I promise you, this is a book you do not want to miss and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to read and review this sure to be best seller before it hits the shelves!
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest opinion.
I was actually super excited for this one, but I think my expectations were too high from Jackson’s previous work, all of which I have LOVED. This seemed very different from her other books, so much so that I had to go back and double check that it was actually Joshilyn Jackson I was reading. It wasn’t as literary as her other books, and it seemed more like a typical Megan Miranda or Lisa Jewell book? Still a good read, I just wonder why the shift. Fast paced and told from a few different perspectives, with some twists and turns I did not expect.
This was a stressful book! So many delightful and scary twists & turns. Loved it. Couldn’t put it down.
Fast paced suspense thriller with so much going on that from the first page my head was spinning in a good way. Who was her stalker? Did her really follow her cross country? Are the other men in her life good or bad?
The characters are wonderful, especially the way Jackson wrote Honor. Quick read you won’t put down.
I just love Joshilyn Jackson books! When I read the synopsis of With My Little Eye I could not wait to get started, and it definitely did not disappoint! Letters, creepy mail, and stalkers, all make for the perfect thriller. Excellent writing and plot development as always. Highly recommend picking this one up!
A superb fast paced thriller. I absolutely loved the story and couldn’t stop reading it. It’s perfect for all readers, especially thriller lovers.
Want to be kept on your toes with a fast paced thriller?! Read Joshilyn Jackson. I loved Mother May I and this new release is almost as good! Started out a bit slower and I was worried it was going to be your typical "beautiful woman being stalked" book, but true to Jackson's fashion, she made it her own! Once the plot started rolling I couldn't put it down. The insight into the stalkers mind was a tad disturbing, but also very realistic. I Loved how the character of Honor was written. Jackson really drew on the strengths and uniqueness that makes parenting a child on the autism spectrum equally hard and wonderful. The ending came quickly but I definitely recommend this high octane thriller! #withmylittleeye #joshilynjackson #netgalley #goodreads
Joshilyn Jackson has a winner on her hands with "With My Little Eye". It kept me engaged the whole way through.
Yet another amazing domestic thriller from Joshilyn Jackson! I loved the feeling of darkness emanating from the story, which definitely had a bit of a goth feel to it. The perfect read for fall!
Meribel Mills is a successful actress and as a result has become blase about the the fan mail she receives, some flattering, some weird, some just plain creepy. That’s why initially she doesn’t bat an eyelash at the odd letters she received that are written in scented marker. But she is alarmed when it’s obvious that Marker Man, as she calls him, has been in her house, has lain beneath her sheets. She informs the police when his letters become even more disturbing – he’s now including vivid drawings of the terrible things he wants to do to Meribel. Unfortunately, the police offer little help, insisting that the odds are that Meribel’s stalker won’t harm her. Left to defend herself, Meribel begins to look at all the men she knows, from an ex to a neighbor to mere acquaintances, not knowing who s behind this campaign of terror. Jackson hi lights the terror that only women can understand, this is a nail biter
