There was lots of excitement in my house when I saw that Cinnamon Twisted, the next book in the series, was available on @netgalley thanks to @kensingtonbooks. It comes out April 25th, 2023, so it’s a huge treat for my daughter to get to read it early.
I think fans of this series will be very satisfied with this installment. My daughter loved the scenes with Dep; Dep was extra feisty in this book, especially when she was high on catnip. There was a lot of romance in this book; we witness a marriage AND Emily and a certain someone are finally, after seven books, in a relationship! Now, my daughter is often romance averse, but she is such a huge fan of all the characters that I think she actually liked the romance!
The mystery is intriguing because it actually seems centered around Emily’s house and the owner who originally built it long ago. This added interest to the storyline because we wanted to know what Emily would discover not only about the murder, but also about her home. There are many potential suspects, including a mean mean police chief who got my daughter riled up with his rude and shady ways! Extra tension is created by Emily being a suspect and by someone trespassing on her property. My daughter and I enjoyed talking through the different motives and alibis. I think we were both surprised as the solution was revealed!
I love reading this series with my daughter and I look forward to more books in the series.
Cinnamon Twisted is a very well written cozy mystery. Loved the plot with its twists and turns. Mystery fans will love this book. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance ebook. This is my unbiased review.
Loved reading this book and author. If you haven't read it yet I highly recommend doing so. Read the books in order
I have enjoyed this series from the beginning and was excited to read this new one. Ginger and her gang were busy solving a mystery involving some strangers in town. Lots of the action happens amid the wedding festivities of their friends. While it was overall an enjoyable mystery, I felt that there were some places that the plotting didn't quite work. It was skewed to make the storyline work.
"Cinnamon Twisted" is a cozy mystery. You don't need to read the previous books in the series to understand this one, and this book didn't spoil the previous mysteries. The characters were interesting and engaging. The mystery was clue-based. Emily witnessed some clues and asked questions to clarify what she's seen or where a suspect had been. She passed on information that she came across to her boyfriend detective and the state detective. Whodunit was guessable before the reveal, but Emily didn't fully sort out the clues needed to determine whodunit until nearly the end. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this fun mystery.
Deputy Donut Cafe owner Emily Westhill knows most of her customers but she doesn’t recognize the customer who comes in and gives her cat a toy donut. When something or someone spooks the customer and she runs out of the café, she loses an earring that Emily tries to return to her. Unfortunately, she finds the customer’s murdered body instead. It turns out the murder victim had a connection to Emily’s house and the police chief in charge of the case thinks that connection was enough to make Emily the killer. With her boyfriend out of town, Emily must work on her own to clear her name before she ends up behind bars for a murder she did not commit.
“Cinnamon Twisted” is the nicely done seventh book in Ginger Bolton’s Deputy Donut cozy mystery series. I really like this series – starting with the donut store setting which always makes me hungry when reading one of the books in the series! I also like Emily as the main character – she owns the donut shop with her father-in-law, building a new life for herself after the tragic death of her husband, finding new love along the way. The addition of the new police chief is a nice touch adding to a lot of conflict that will no doubt add much to future plotlines in the series. The mystery is well done – I love the way it ties in to Emily’s house – with plenty of suspects to keep readers guessing as to who the killer is and just the right amount of tension when the killer is revealed.
“Cinnamon Twisted” is a nicely done cozy mystery.
The newest Deputy Donut mystery finds Emily investigating after she finds a mystery woman murdered. After a woman visits her donut shop and leaves looking scared, Emily is curious. Then on the way to visit her parents, she finds that woman murdered. Amidst all her other life events, she tries to investigate to clear herself and others, especially with the new police chief in town.
I didn't enjoy this as much as others in the series. It was still good, but it felt like there was a lot of other plot and not as much Emily investigating as in other books!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Seventh in the series, this was one of my favorites. Emily and her father-in-law have a donut shop in Wisconsin. And with donuts, as the saying goes, you get cops. The setting is fun and realistic. Characters are well developed. You'll come to love them as family. Solid mystery. If you haven't read any do yourself a favor and read! Thanks #netgalley and #Kensington for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
Emily owns a doughnut café in Fallingbrook, nested in the mountains and the forest. When one of her customers is found dead at their lodge, she investigates.
This was perfectly adequate. I loved the culinary touches in this - there’s a scene where they make a campfire complete with s’mores that actually made me sigh. The romance was nice too and ends in a guy hugely romantic moment. I enjoyed this.
Emily Westhill co-owns Deputy Donut along with her late husband's father, Tom Westhill. They make donut creations, and all the cops, EMTs, and firemen flock to their shop, along with regular local customers. When a woman comes in two days in a row, Emily can't help notice that she appears nervous, but is hesitant to approach her. On the second day, the woman gives Emily's cat Dep a donut-shaped catnip toy and asks to leave through the back door. Emily notices she's lost an earring and grabs it to return later.
But wanting to do so and being able to are different things. When Emily arrives at the rented lake cottage, the woman is dead. Calling her boyfriend Detective Brent Fyne, she waits until he arrives to look over the scene. But right behind him is the new chief of police, Detective Agnew, and he's not happy by Emily's presence.
When it's discovered that the woman was murdered, Emily is at the top of Agnew's list of suspects, so she is determined to get herself off the hook. But stumbling blocks are many -- including strange goings-on in her yard, locals that might have known the woman, and the detective sending Brent out of town so she can't share information with him. It's up to Emily herself to try and figure everything out, and if she doesn't she just might be making her tasty treats in prison...
This is the seventh book in the series and I have read them all. I have also loved them all. Ms. Bolton writes characters so well that you can almost feel as if you are right there in their small little Wisconsin town. I definitely would love to try some of the donut creations, but since I don't eat a lot of sugar, I'd probably pass out. Still, it would be worth it!
In this story we have several subplots along with the main plot, and they are woven into the story seamlessly. Each and every clue is written piece by piece, and actually delivered by someone I would like to know. They paint the picture that the dead woman may not have been a nice person after all, and more than one might have wanted revenge. But enough to kill her? That's what Emily needs to find out, hoping to stay under the radar.
As to the subplots, all of them are interesting enough to keep you reading, and most are worthy in their own right. But it's Emily who takes center stage in this mystery, and wondering who wants to find something in her yard so badly and what it could possibly be.
I hesitate to say more as I don't want to spoil the book for others, but suffice it to say that the threads are woven nicely, the characters interesting, and the reason for the murder truly sad and leaving you thinking that no one can see into the mind of a murderer. But the ending was truly surprising, and it leaves me wanting to read the next in the series right now. Highly recommended.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.
I was interested in this book because I thought the cover illustration was cute and colourful, and I got the impression that it would be a fun book to read, so I was happy to be approved to read and review it.
I was expecting another cosy mystery, and that was what this was. It was very charming as well. As a cat lover, I appreciated the bond between Emily and Dep the cat, and the way they communicated. It seemed to me that Dep was Emily's partner in crime as well as her companion, and I was able to relate to their connection on some level.
I think this is a book that would catch my attention in a bookshop or library, partly because of the cover design, and the mention of food in the title would also have some appeal. I usually find culinary themed cosy mysteries to be quite entertaining. I would probably be interested in reading some more of these, and I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys cosy mysteries, or anyone looking for a cheerful, light-hearted read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for my opportunity to read and review this.

Emily is a widow who runs the donut shop with her father-in-law and is seeing another local law enforcement officer. She becomes entangled in a murder investigation even as the short-sighted new police chief decides that Emily is guilty. Fortunately, he also has to call in the state detectives and the madness begins in earnest. Another really good read in series.
Not exactly an unbiased review because I'm from Wisconsin and the setting is a tourist town in Wisconsin near Duluth. Besides that, I Back the Badge.
I requested and received a free temporary e-book copy from Kensington Books/Kensington Cozies via NetGalley. Thank you!
By far my most favorite book (so far) in this series. I really enjoyed that this book wasn't all about murder. There was part of it that covered Misty's wedding and it seemed like Emily was able to enjoy it. She didn't seem to be focused on solving the murder of one her customers, I felt it was kind of nice to see a different side of her. The murder case was also interesting and I wasn't even close to figuring out who was the killer was. And the ending was WOW!
Cinnamon Twisted by Ginger Bolton is a great culinary cozy mystery that is the seventh book in the wonderful series: A Deputy Donut Mystery.
I have enjoyed all seven books in this series. The concept of a small town and the delightful Deputy Donut Cafe with its sweet, likable, realistic, and hat of all trades owner Emily Westhill makes for a genuinely fun series.
I enjoyed the wedding involving secondary characters, the murder/mystery, the pacing, and the evolution of the full character cast within this book. I also really like Emily and Brent…and of course I am quite pleased that I got to spend more time with her adorable parents and the awesome Dep. Bring on more Dep!!
There were a few twists that kept me wondering, and I enjoyed the ending.
Definitely looking forward to the next book. I most certainly recommend this to anyone that loves a good cozy mystery.
4.5/5 stars
Thank you NG and Kensington Books for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication on 4/25/23.
I loved this cozy mystery. It had all the great elements that a cozy needs, animals, food, and a murder to solve. I read this book in one sitting it was so good and kept me wanting to know more.
I received this copy from Net Galley to review.
Another solid entry in this enjoyable series. Emily gets involved in a mystery involving someone new to town, her house’s history, and a new police chief. The mystery itself is plausibly constructed and moves along well, and I like that Emily’s involvement seems believable. She doesn’t drop everything to investigate with little reason as in some other mystery series. There are some developments in regular characters’ personal lives as well. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest opinion.
I love cozy mysteries that deal with food especially. This was a fun book how they found the killer and user food in it. This book was approved by netgalley and the publisher.
I love Deputy Doughnut! The shop is adorable and I love that she has a window so her cat can enjoy the shop. The mystery was fun and had a creative plot. An unusual customer came and visited then left suspiciously. Emily then tracts her down again only to find that she was dead. It was a fun adventure.

This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, from Kensington Books and #NetGalley. Thank you to the publishers, NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to preview and review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
What a charming cozy mystery full of quirky, lovely characters
This series just gets better with each book, and Cinnamon Twisted is a fast paced story that will keep you guessing until the end.
Emily is getting ready for her friends wedding, her parents are in town, and her boyfriend, Brent, is busy working.
Things seem normal for Emily until a bizarre murder sets everyone on edge.
Whenever a book has a character I really dislike, I know its going to be a great story. Chief Agnew fits this perfectly, his condescending attitude, his immediate dislike of Emily, and his belligerent disposition are just a few of the things that annoyed me.
I highly recommend this book and the series by the talented Ginger Bolton.
