Unfamiliar is a comic with cute, spooky, witchy art. It relies on awkward moments and the power of friendship to give us a quirky, memorable story that's also quite funny at times. The characters literally show their thoughts and feelings in their eyes, which is both adorable and also shows what a mess they all are (same).
The story starts with Planchette and Pinyon, two useless (or so they think) witches teaming up for an exorcism. Planchette's a kitchen witch, and Pinyon's the dud in a long line of illustrious witches. Planchette's new house is haunted, which explains why she was able to get it at a steep discount. Only ghostly therapy can help the spirits move on. Or possibly a new hair ribbon.
Our other two main characters give off major sapphic vibes. Babs is half siren and desperate to just exist without admirers fawning over her. Maybe Sun, who knows how to be off-putting and aloof, can help her dream come true. But it turns out Sun was cursed and is saving up an exorbitant amount of money for the local witch doctor to fix her. Maybe the two can help each other get what they need.
I had such a good time reading this story and want to see what happens next. Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing for my copy to read and review!
This was such a fun and quirky read. I love every character and the adventures they encounter. I'd love to reconnect with them again every halloween for another adventure. The character development is fantastic.
One of those stories where nothing of any real consequence happens and the characters are too quirky and cute to have any real depth. The story follows a random wiggle armed witch and her cohorts as they... run around and don't do a whole lot.
The art style isn't my cup of tea, riffing on the almost being adventure time but not quite, but that's more of a subjective complaint.
Better read as a webcomic than purchased.
There are much better stories in this same category like Hooky.
Thanks to netgalley for the arc.
Unfamiliar is a webcomic-turned-graphic novel about learning to love yourself and your perceived flaws, helping others, and finding a coven that feels like home. The art is adorable and the color palette is baby goth. At times, it felt like the dialogue jumped too quickly to move the plot along, but overall an adorable afternoon read!
The story is sweet, whimsy, with a hint of dark. A merge of gentle fantasy and witchy vibes. The art is pleasing and reminds the reader of Japanese folklore and art with its unique twist. Would recommend.
I loved this so much. I want to read the next one right this minute. The illustration was just fabulous. I love the story. I love the friendships that are forming between the characters. Winston is the cutest and so Ari. I highly recommend this. I will be reading the next one. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
Delightful and fun. Newsome illustrations and use of color is so charming in this adorable story about a kitchen witch dealing with hauntings.
This is such an adorable coming-of-age graphic novel based on Newsome's hit webtoon (I can see why!). Its fast pace and lively art make for a very fun read. The colours are so vibrant and apart from being a visual delight, it's filled with enough details to make this more than just a quick story. I have to admit, however, that it tries to cover a lot of different sub-plots without going super deep into any, making the reader feel rather unsatisfied, but I guess that's what the rest of the series is for! I can't wait to read the next volume in this gorgeous, adventurous tale!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book, as this book has already been published, I will not share my review on Netgalley at this time.
This graphic novel was so cute! I loved the characters and can’t wait to see more volumes of this series.
I absolutely loved this novel.
Such a great story with defined characters and a great plot.
What drew me in the most was how fleshed out the characters were
The writing style was fluid and relateable.
The cover was fascinating as well.
A reviting read overall
Definitely recommend adding this to your TBR!
Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel.
This has an adorable artstyle!!! Not just that but the plot is mysterious, fluffy, ghostie, spooky, and interesting. I would most recommend it for teens/young adults but adults can enjoy it as well. I am curious to see what happens next and glad I picked it up! I think my only issue was that it ended abruptly and I wanted more. Because of these points, I have to give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars
This is so adorable, oh my GOD. I adore this book so much and can't wait until the next installment comes out. Both the tale and the art style are wonderful!
Unfamiliar, a graphic novel by Haley Newsome, is a hilarious and thrilling tale of friendship and overcoming hauntings. With its fast-paced story and vibrant art, this book is filled with controlled chaos and infectious energy. While it may try to do a bit too much, it sets up a promising series. Unfamiliar captures the essence of vulnerability and the beauty of facing the world with friends. A delightful read that leaves you eagerly awaiting the next installment.
This was super cute! I might have to go look up the webcomic to see what happens next. I love the quirkiness of all the characters. I’m fully invested in Alice solving Lucy’s murder!
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. (The version I read was a finished copy.)
Well isn’t this book so damn cute?
Really loved it! The characters are lovable and I enjoyed it all in all.
Would totally recommend
This was so darn cute! I love the cute illustrations in a otherwise quirky story. This comic follows Planchette, a witch that can only use her magic to produce food. When she moved into her new home, she found that she needed help beyond her skills to get rid of the ghosts in her home. She asked Pinyon for help but she isn’t very good at magic either. Planchette then turns to Sun, who seemed to be angry at the whole world but she isn’t of much help. Then there is Babs, who is a siren but ghost s are not her forte.
Together, they form the most unlikely friendship and try their best to help each other. The whole story is not bad but there isn’t much context to the plot as it focuses more on the characters. Hopefully, there will be more plot development in Volume 2.
Thank you Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the arc.
Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a cute graphic novel following a young witch who gets too good of a deal on her new house. She must find a way to rid her new house of ghosts. On the journey to find help she encounters several interesting characters and new friendships are formed. This is a cute, wholesome graphic novel for young adults and adults alike.
I have recently started to get into reading graphic novels. I was intrigued by this one because of the beautiful cover and the art style. Once I started reading the graphic novel, I was blown away by how quickly I started to love these characters. Graphic novels are short and I just wanted more and more.
This little novel follows Planchette and her familiar as she learns about the people in her new town in order to fight off the ghosts haunting her home. There is the cutest found family and each character is learning how to be scared and brave all at once. It was lovely, I loved it, I want everyone to read it.
A light hearted story that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a bit bumbling and haphazard, solid elements for a light buddy comedy. You're not getting a lot of depth here but it's the good kind of silly for simple entertainment.
