This is an adorable, wholesome debut graphic novel, perfect for the fall season. I liked the art style and I think it really fit the vibe of the story. The characters are endearing and the plot jumps around to the various characters a lot so it's pretty fast paced and engaging. The art and story felt like a combination of Adventure Time, Star vs the Forces of Evil, and The Owl House so if you're into those kinds of cartoons, you'll really like this.

Title: Unfamiliar
Authors: Haley Newsome
Rating: 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Release Date: December 6th, 2022

This was such an adorable story perfect for October. I loved the art style and the characters were so cute. The art is really really adorable so if you are just picking this up to keep on the shelf it would totally be worth it for that alone. The characters were also just so precious. They just have such an air of innocence that is so nice. There is enough here to both satisfy by itself and keep me interested in getting more of the story. I also loved that the mc was a kitchen witch, it makes the second book this month about kitchen witches that I have read. One note I will leave you with is that digitally I found the font a bit hard to read so I would recommend this either on a bigger screen or physically.

Unfamiliar is about a kitchen witch named Planchet who is moving to a new town with her familiar. When they get to their new home they find it's haunted and inlist the help of some of the other witches in town!

This graphic novel is so CUTE!! The art is beautiful and I loved the storyline/side storylines and all the fun characters we get introduced to along the way💖

If you want a funny & cute witchy read that focuses on friendship then I recommend you pick this one up. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

Also, thank you to netgalley for providing me with an e-arc!

I loved this graphic novel. It’s art style is exactly what I enjoy to look at/read. It was a spooky story that was still told in a fun way through humor. I can’t wait for the next volume

I haven't read the webcomic, but I did use to watch them a few years ago so when I saw this on netgalley I wanted to read it. It's nice to see that the art style hasn't changed since I last saw it! Now the story was a little mediocre and underwhelming, but I've noticed saying the same thing over almost every graphic novel I've read so it's either me or it's just the way graphic novels are meant to be. Either way, it was decent enough for a quick and fun read!

I thought that this was a good and fun read and it is perfect for this time of the year

I loved the mix of characters and the illustrations were brilliant!

The illustrations really worked with the story and brought the book to life

The story was a little all over the place and a bit out there but it all worked and I enjoyed it way more than I expected I would

It is 4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon!

Like a lot of graphic novels, this reads really quickly. Sometimes it feels like the relationships grow from nothing (Pinyon and Planchette), but this may find its roots in the book's beginnings as a webcomic. Nevertheless, it's impressive how quickly the characters become lovable, the art is adorable, and the story is full of fun, warm moments, like Planchette magically fixing a melted chocolate bar to tell Pinyon to cheer up.

I would definitely recommend this title!

I loved this SO MUCH 😍

I didn’t know anything about Unfamiliar going in to this story, but I love comics and I love witchy stories (especially during this season!) this was such an adorable, funny and sweet story about friendship. The magic and the antics had me laughing out loud at every turn, and there is so much positive messaging throughout!

The art style is also absolutely stunning. There are so many quirks that add fun detail, such as the witches pupils changing depending on what they are looking at, thinking about, or talking about. They all have such a distinct sense of style and personality. I will 100% be checking out this webcomic, I can’t get enough!

Read this if you like: kitchen witches, haunted houses, magical antics, unexpected friendships, ghosts with unexpected desires, and all manner of fantasy creatures.

Thank you to Andrew’s McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this one ahead of publishing!

Oh my goodness this was so cute! I loved the illustration and the group of witches/familiars. I loved the dry humor and sass.

The plot was a little wacky and all over the place, but it was still super fun and so cute! Definitely perfect for the younger crowd! (But can absolutely be loved by adults!)

This is the cutest graphic novel for spooky season and you won't change my mind. It kind of reminded me of Gravity Falls with its whimsicality and humor, but the art style is something else entirely. It's simultaneously eerie and adorable. And what's even cooler is that it started as a webcomic! The entire cast of characters is compelling - between Planchette trying to exorcise her house, the crotchety detective Alice, the sassy Sun working the day away, and more, you're going to fall in love so quickly. I can't wait to read the next volume and see what happens next!

A super cute quirky spooky graphic novel!

To be honest it's almost more of a collection of comics that go together than it is a graphic novel. There isn't really a continuous plot and The chapters kind of jump a little bit but I don't even care. I thought that this was so cute and wholesome. I loved the art style and thought it was adorable. It is very much the like cartoony cutesy style so if that's not your jam maybe skip this one but I also found moments of this hilarious. I think it's super funny that the main characters a kitchen witch and the only magic she can do is make food. I loved that we had a sapphic pining between two other characters. I loved that one of the familiars is a half a taxidermied lizard / alligator of sorts. It was very much my style of humor and I enjoyed it a lot.

- I watch the author's YouTube, so I was so excited to see her debut here! I'm also probably a little biased but whatever, this was super duper heartwarming.
the pros:
- I love all the friendships - they're really the heart of this book.
- Cute and spooky is such a great combination and this just ✨perfectly✨ hits the spooky without being dark at all
- The characters are so much fun. They each have backstories and their own problems, but the story still manages to move smoothly between them
- The art style is adorable and unique.
- The character design is great with the four central characters all having different body types.
And I only have a few but, the cons:
- It felt more like a comic than a graphic novel, the story kinda happens in episodes that don't really feel like chapters somehow?
- I wish there were some characters that weren't pale and assumed to be white.
Overall, just really lighthearted and fun!

A quick fun comic about a young witch and her friends! Would be a great read for my 7 year old daughters. I loved the witchy vibe and the color palette. The lettering was sometimes hard to read, and I worry especially younger readers would have a hard time following who was speaking throughout.

This is painfully adorable, I love the story and the artwork so much and I can't wait to see where this story goes as more volumes come out. Very excited for further work from the artist and writer as well.

Oh my gosh! This was the sweetest little spooky graphic novel! I loved everything about this. The story, the illustrations, the characters and the friendships they formed. Even the little skull shaped haunted house full of ghosts!
Planchette is the most beautiful little soul, she is so kindhearted, I loved her.
This is a beautiful graphic novel, that readers of all ages will enjoy. I highly reccomend this.

Many thanks to NetGalley for letting me read Unfamiliar.

This was a super cute and light graphic novel. The plot was super random but in a fun way. While a young with makes new friends and banishes ghosts. Working together on their problems. It does end on a cliffhanger and I look forward to seeing what the next volume brings

3.5 ⭐️

This graphic novel was super cute and the illustrations were so beautiful! The characters were unique and I always love when something has a little witchy vibe to it.

As a adult woman, I found the plot to be a little bit underwhelming, but I think if a elementary/middle school aged kid would love this! It was a simple story about friendship and how small and basic acts of kindness can really make a difference.

I can’t say it’s my favorite thing I’ve ever read, but with it being my first graphic novel, it was a fun in-between refresher that is perfect for the fall.
