Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome was such a delightfully adorable graphic novel filled with beautiful illustrations. It is about a witch who moves into a haunted house and all her cute antics
This was such a cute graphic novel about a witch who moves into a haunted house. As she looks for ways to be rid of her unwanted house guests she meets the locals and befriends them. The art style is whimsical and the colour pallet is unique. All in all this is a great read.

Join a group of witches and their familiars as they navigate the mysteries of a house full of ghosts while trying to balance their own perceived shortcomings through working together.
Unfamiliar is the perfect blend of cutesy graphics and relationships alongside mysterious, dark subplot. I thoroughly enjoyed being introduced to each character, especially Winston the grumpy bunny familiar, as we learn what feats hold them back and watch as they each show each other what strengths make them who they are. A great story about the power of lifting up others is blended in with the main plot line.
I highly recommend this first volume and you can continue story on Tapas if you just couldn’t get enough, like myself.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this graphic novel.
This was a cute little graphic novel about a witch trying to find her place in her new home and discovering new friends--who maybe also need a little help fitting in--along the way. A fun, witchy read.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
Planchette moves to a new home in a new town. When she arrives she finds out that her home is haunted. Because she is a kitchen witch, she goes to the town to try and find another witch to help her get rid of the ghosts. She meets and makes friends with some of the local witches.
This is a cute and happy story with a spooky witchy atmosphere. The story jumps around and highlights the different witches that Planchette meets. One reason I did not give this five stars is because the story completely dropped Planchette for a while when it seemed like the book was supposed to be about her.
This would be a good story for a middle-grade reader or older.
This was a very cute, quirky graphic novel involving young witches who aren't having the best day. They come together to help each other, though, and encounter some interesting folks along the way. They and their animal familiars are adorable. It's very sweet and funny -- a totally not scary read for any time of the year. The artwork is very cool -- I especially enjoyed how the pupils of the characters' eyes changed to reflect a reaction or mood. I look forward to reading more adventures from this gang!

In unfamiliar, we follow Planchette as she moves into a new house, only to find it swarming with ghosts. Due to Planchette being a kitchen witch, she decides to go search for help for the exorcism during which she meets Pinyon, Sun, and Babs. Each character had their own little story.
I believe this is the first time I saw a food-related type of witch which was very unique and fun! The art style is adorable as well. I had a great time. I'll also check the webcomic on Tapas.
Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome - 5/5
Unfamiliar is a cute and quirky graphic novel that is perfect not only for this spooky season but anytime you need something new to read.
Throughout the graphic novel we follow along with a Witch how is newly moved into a haunted house that has working overtime. Between clearing out unwanted ghosts she is working her way around town meeting new people.
I enjoyed this graphic novel and it came to me at a time I was in a reading slump so this is one I will be recommending to others in the future.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
This was an incredibly adorable comic, and I can see why it gained so much popularity on Tapas.
We follow Planchette, a kitchen witch who moves to a new home that turns out to be super haunted. In her attempts to find someone to help her de-ghost her home, she meets a few other witches that round out the main cast. Each witch has her own issues and things going on, but ultimately they end up being friends and making wholesome connections with each other. Even the ghost busting turns out mostly wholesome in the end.
This was honestly just a really cute, cozy witch comic. The art was fun and a little twee, with some fun character work and interesting color work. Super recommended if you're looking for a cute, no stress fun time.
Looking for something witchy, cute, and a bit weird? I've got the title for you. I adored this cute graphic novel and all of its fun characters. I honestly can't wait to read the next in the series.
This is a fantasy graphic novel about a witch moving to a new town and into a ghost infested house. She'll need help from new friends to really call that house a home. Really cosy vibes all around, I loved the art and the colors and how every witch is specialised in their own kind of magic. Can't wait to learn more about these characters!
I thought this was such a cute graphic novel. I love the characters and plot of the story and the art style was so cute. I love how the main character Planchette is a kitchen witch and goes off with her familiar to a new town where in her new house there are ghost. Along the way when she is trying to find someone to help her she makes new friends and they all try to help. I can not wait to read the second volume and see where the adventures go from here.
This was such a cozy, wholesome read 😊 I enjoyed the main storyline of Planchette trying to find ways for ghosts to move on. All the side character storylines were so precious too. I just wanted to protect all the characters from hurting, because they are just too sweet. Regarding the art, I loved how everyone's eyes are so expressive and the character designs are so fun. I really want to see what happens in the next volume! Also love that the author has previously lived in Calgary 😱

Unfamiliar is a cute and whimsical graphic novel following the trials and tribulations of Planchette, a young kitchen witch who travels to a small city to finally move into her own home. But the moment she enters the door, she discovers something awful: It’s haunted! Full of mischievous, frightening, and sometimes lonely ghosts, Planchette’s new house gives her more problems than she bargained for. So she decides to exorcize every ghost there, which also turns out to be incredibly difficult if you don’t know what each ghost’s main problem is. With the help of a witch from a powerful coven, a shy siren, and a cursed girl, Planchette takes on the challenge with magical whimsy, mayhem, and new formed friendships.
Unfamiliar is a sweet witch-fulled graphic novels full of misunderstood ghosts, magic spells and potions, mythical creatures, curses, and all out sincere fun. Having been previously published on Tapas, each chapter is episodic: Planchette’s main goal of ridding the house of ghosts in the main thread of the story, but each chapter focuses on a certain character, whether that be her new friend from the witch coven, the siren, the cursed girl, or the ghosts themselves and their backstories. This isn’t a spooky comic, because everything is taking in a very light-hearted tone, with the “power-of-friendship” being the main theme here. The art style is very bubbly and cute-sy, with everyone having huge cartoon/anime style eyes (which may put off some readers), which adds more to the light, whimsical feel of the books. With lots of humor, interesting characters, and magical mischief, Unfamiliar is a feel-good addition to the plethora of graphic novels featuring witches that will lighten your mood after a long day.
Unfamiliar is a cozy, witchy graphic novel following a kitchen witch, Planchette, striking out on her own. Unfortunately, her new home is wildly haunted and she needs help setting the ghosts free. Along the road she meets new people who help her and build a community.
The art in this book is awesome, I really loved the style. Since this is going to be a series with multiple volumes, I do wish that this fist volume would’ve slowed down and narrowed its focus more on the haunted house and Planchette learning about the ghosts inhabiting the house.
The characters we met were fun, but there were so many characters that branched off into multiple different storylines that I become less and less invested in the original Planchette/ghost plot line. I loved the dynamic between Babs and Sun and want to see more of them.
Overall, a very cute and cozy graphic novel that had just a bit too many things happening.
A fun addition to the children's witch graphic novel section! I will be recommending this book to customers at my store. Like the illustrations too!
This was such a cute graphic novel!! I love the the story as well as the bits of comedy put into it! The artistry was on the weird side but it totally worked for this book!
It's hard for me to pass up a book about witches, and, in truth, I enjoyed the many plots that were going on here: haunted houses, curses, long lost lovers reunited . . .
BUT, I didn't know the book featured manga-inspired artwork. These saucer-eyed bimbos drive me nuts, along with the frenetic action scenes that make it hard to figure out what's going on.
The book offers some fun characters who form fine friendships, so hopefully a younger audience will love it more than I did.
Cute graphic novel about (YA?) witches figuring out who they are and finding friends. Lots of characters for such a short story. 3.5 stars.
