Unfamiliar follows a few characters as they try to get rid of the hoard of ghosts in Planchettes new house; Planchette moves to a new town and meets a few new friends on her newest adventure.
This comic is so cute; I loved the art style and all the characters and their companions were so adorable. This is a relatively short comic however the growth and bond of the characters in Planchette’s new circle are completely realistic and very sweet. The style of art is very soft, cutesy and bubbly with the perfect level of dark and creepy laced in, I love the choices in colour palettes as the colours PERFECTLY match the conversations playing out on page.

We follow Planchette, a witch, as she moves into a new house in a new town. She soon discovers that her new house is haunted and has to discover why the ghosts can’t rest. This means teaming up with new friends and having an adventure.
I have been reading a lot of graphic novels lately, and this was a fun one!
The characters and the art were wonderful! There were quotes in this book that had me laughing out loud and the characters were quirky. The art style was beautiful. I absolutely loved the colors that the illustrator used. The way the characters were drawn was very unique.
The plot was just ok for me, but I did enjoy this graphic novel as a whole!
I think this will work best for people who are looking for a spooky, not scary read. If you are looking for a whimsical book that involves ghosts, witches, and friendship then this may be perfect for you.
I loved the striking and eye-catching artwork, but the story was all over the place and lost me in the first chapter. There were lots of characters but most weren't sufficiently fleshed out. The only part I liked was Alice's and Lucy's story. I was never fully invested in this forgettable read and it's unlikely I will continue with the next volume.

I really like comics and webcomics so I was really excited to start this one. Unfortunately, it wasn't really my style? The drawings I really liked, they were original and well drawn, and the colous were really fitting the mood of the comic. But regarding the story, I didn't really like it... The characters felt really stereotyped to me and things were pretty predictable. But if you're looking for a short comic to unwind this might be good.
SUPER cute. I love a good adorable graphic novel, and a witchy-themed one is just over the top for me. Its a fun cute read that just makes me feel great. I'll be buying a physical copy for my shelf and rereading in the future.
I received an e-galley of Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome from Andrews McMeel via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This adorable and funny graphic novel follows the adventures of a young magical witch named Planchette whose magic is only capable in the kitchen. When she moves to a new town, she finds that the home she's supposed to be staying in is haunted - something that is definitely not up her alley of things that she can figure out on her own. With the help of some peculiar and interesting magical friends in town, Planchette finds the power and strength of friendship.
I adored Planchette and her new friends. I really enjoyed the humour and also the peculiarity of all the characters that appeared in Unfamiliar.
Unfamiliar is such a cute graphic novel! I previously saw Haley Newsome’s work on Tapas and really enjoyed this compilation. The art conveys spookiness and slice-of-life problems at the same time. My favorite characters were Sun and Babs; I can’t wait to see how their journeys continue! I want to learn more about Sun's curse and how she got it. Newsome has designed a world with unique mythology and yet characters still need to deal with everyday events like shopping at the local Hex-Mart. I like how Newsome shows the emotions of her characters through the irises of their eyes or familiars. This is a delightfully spooky and sweet graphic novel! I’m excited to read more of Haley Newsome’s work! Thank you to Haley Newsome, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Netgalley for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This graphic novel was so adorable. I loved the artwork and colors. The characters were really fun and the story was super sweet. This is volume 1, so there are many loose strings left at the end of this book. But that just makes me want the next one sooner! Readers that enjoy fantasy graphic novels will likely enjoy this one.
In the first volume of this webcomic, we follow Planchette as she finally moves to a magical town where she won’t be the only witch around. As a kitchen witch, Planchette has magic on her side… at least that’s what she thought, because it turns out she bought a haunted house and she doesn’t know how to sort out the haunting! Planchette makes her way around town making new friends while looking for someone to perform an exorcism, allowing us to follow her new friend’s lives as well.
I picked up this book because it sounded adorable and heartwarming, and it sure didn’t miss the mark! We follow Planchette and the friends she meets along the way. I can’t even choose a favorite because I love Planchette, Pinyon, Sun, and Babs equally. Pinyon is a witch who appears to not have any powers, Sun is working day and night so she can afford to have a curse removed, and Babs is an introverted siren who hopes to be more like Sun. Each of these characters become friends through the course of the first volume, and to think it all began with a haunted house!
There’s so many charming characters and storylines, and then there’s a few darker storylines that we’re about to watch friendship blaze the way through them. Each of the main characters have many layers and are full of surprises while the townsfolk are a bunch of interesting characters I’m excited to see more of. It’s also a surprisingly fast paced read. There’s a lot going on without being overwhelming, and we’re slowly introduced to characters so we can get to know them rather than suddenly have a large amount of new characters on our hands at every turn. I really like how the story is written and pulled together, so I’m excited to see what happens next.
Of course, the artwork is adorable! It’s colorful, cute, and fun. I really like the concept art that’s featured at the end of the volume, allowing us to see the early sketches of the characters compared to the final results. It’s always fun to see!
Thank you to Netgalley, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Ms. Newsome for the opportunity to read an ARC of this title. An honest review was requested but not required.
Apparently Unfamiliar is a big hit on Tapas, which I have had recommended to me from various sources of late. I am an on-again/off-again subscriber to Manta, so I’m familiar with the idea of webcomics.
This one was cute. I would definitely read its followup, if the followup was easy to access, but I don’t know if I would go looking for it. I was more interested in the dark characters (the witch doctor, the café owner) than in Babs, Planchette, Pinyon or Sun. Well, I take that back: I did like Sun. And I liked the idea of putting ghosts to rest by using supernatural detection skills to find out what they needed. If there had only been a little more story going on here, I think I would have been happier. The plot split between the four witches was a plot spread a little too thin. Art-wise, well, I get the appeal, but I’m not sure the art was my jam. Fried-egg eyes and boobs is a …style… but it’s not my favorite style.
Nonetheless, as I said, it was cute, and I would not be at all adverse to reading a part 2, especially if it focused on Sun.
⭐⭐⭐
quirky, adventurous, fun, with adorable art style. Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a lighthearted must read! if you want something refreshing, then this one is for you!
Sometimes very peculiar, but super adorable!
A witch befriending all sort of ghosts and creatures while cleaning out her haunted dream house.
The illustrations are beautiful and the story is fun, cute and quirky.
Cute, charming graphic novel about young witches joining together to defeat several challenges and learn from each other.
In this short graphic novel we get introduced to a young witch who specialises in cooking magic and has a smart companion pet. She moves into a house that is being haunted and decides to look for help in getting rid of ghosts. Our witch meets new friends, helps them solve their own little problems and makes new friendships.
Even though, Unfamiliar, written by Haley Newsome is definitely leaning towards the younger side of readers, I was still enjoying following these young unexperienced witches. It was a cozy, warm reading for a chilling season.

I received an eARC of this book for my honest opinion
This was such a cute graphic novel. I loved the charming little story of 4 young witches: Sun, Planchette, Pinyon, and Babs with their familiars. It starts off with Planchette moving somewhere new where she hopes to make friends but ends up moving into somewhere haunted. Her and her familiar go around town until she comes across another witch and asks if she can help her situation. In this story you get to see how each character interacts with each other and how they want to help each other through each of their downfalls as a witch.
I really loved the story line in this comic, it was a cute fun read, and I cannot wait to see what Vol.2 will bring us.
I thought the graphics were done wonderfully; I have no complaint about them. They were fun and bright and really brought this book to life. I thought the Unfamiliar sketchbook at the ending was great to look through and see the changes that Newsome made of each character.
I want to Thank NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this graphic novel.
Super cute, wanted more! This is a couple of issues bound together and by the last one, we kind of lost one of the characters. Hopefully she comes back in the next volume and hopefully there is a next volume!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This little graphic novel was so cute and wholesome. The art style was incredible and the color palette was so well suited to the story.
The witchy plot delves into some real world problems which made it so much more relatable. The characters were quirky, fun and on a path to an unsuspecting friendship they didn't see coming.
Many reviewers have said that this is a perfect Halloween read, but I'm a witchy vibes lover and would read this any time of the year.
Can't wait for part 2!
This graphic novel was absolutely adorable! The colours were super vibrant, the art style was super cute and I loved all of the developing friendships. This follows Planchette as she moves to a new town and realizes her new house is haunted! But she's a kitchen witch and not equipped to properly manage these ghosts so she seeks out help from the locals and things spiral from there.
I really enjoyed the different plots that cropped up! The magic was so cute too and I love that this reads so cozy and makes you feel warm. I definitely recommend this one if you're looking for a cute graphic novel with adorable art!
#ad I received this copy for free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
The illustration style was really cute!
I found the first chapter a little dry. The character seemed to go back and forth a little unnecessarily.
The narrative is a little choppy around the middle as the character go on separate adventures and cuts from one to the other, but it does provide reminders in their dialogue of their backstory and why they're doing what they're doing, so I was able to keep up.
I found it enjoyable towards the end. Would even consider volume 2.
It was such a cute story! ❤️
This is a graphic novel that feels like hug, a charming story of several young witches who must join forces to face the challenges of fate.
In the meantime, a lovely bond develops between them, which makes the whole story extremely cozy and heartwarming.
Graphically I also have nothing to complain about it, it is beautiful!
I'm glad that I was able to read it thanks to NetGalley.
What a sweet graphic novel. The artwork is absolutely adorable and the story of finding friendship in the most unlikely people is heartwarming and endearing. When it is published it will make a great addition to my high school collection. The story will be a breeze to book talk too.
