Tooooo cute!!! Love the chibi-ish illustration style. And unique friendship between the girls. Looking forward to more!
The art was unique with toned-down colors and cutsy-style characters drawings, though it seemed like some elements were messy or colors inconsistent, more drafted. It is probably just the style, it just wasn't a style I tend to enjoy. I like the uniqueness of each witches' character, but I didn't feel like I really got to know any particular one as the story switched between different perspectives quickly and the main goal (clearing the house of ghosts) seemed to fall on the wayside to introduce new characters rather than consider the plot. I am more plot focused than character focused, but anyone who likes a story focused on characters and witchy reads will enjoy this short introduction to them.
Arc provided from NetGalley!
This graphic novel was packed full of fun characters who all have their own unique personalities! The art is whimsical and gives off a Victorian vibe that fits really well with the witch theme. One of the characters works at a string of jobs one of which was a witch superstore and it made me giggle.
This graphic novel is super cute. It's a good quick feel good read that made me laugh and feel for the characters. I'm super excited to see where this story goes and how the characters solve their problems and become better friends. I really liked the concept art and evolution of the Planchette's art at the end of the book.
I've been a fan of Haley's YouTube channel for years and I was ecstatic to be able to get an ARC of unfamiliar.
I loved the introduction to our main cast. They're all such individuals and I can't wait to see how their individual stories progress along with their combined story.
The art style is beautiful! Each page was just so nice to look at. I love the slightly creepy but still super cute vibes.
I'm already super excited for volume 2!
Newsome builds a delightfully spooky-cute world with wholesome characters building a heartwarming friendship. The artwork is distinct, charmingly rounded and almost melty, vaguely like Dr. Seuss by way of Sanrio cuteness.
Each character is struggling with a problem - Planchette has a house full of ghosts; Sun is laboring under a curse; and Babs dislikes the attention her innately magical siren heritage brings to her. Together they start making progress towards solving their unique issues, using the power of newfound friendship. There is plenty to like here, and any fan of graphic novels, witches, or spooky season in general will likely devour this and look immediately for a sequel.
"Unfamiliar" looked pretty adorable and even though we've rolled into November, I wasn't quite ready to give up on Halloween yet, so it made perfect sense to read this now!
I'd chosen it initially because of the adorable style, but that method hasn't always worked out for me. I'm thrilled to say it absolutely worked in this case! The first few panels introduce us to Planchette, a little kitchen witch who has obviously got a bit of procrastination going on in her life. Hard same, Planchette, hard same. If only I could figure out how to do a pizza potion...
The storylines in "Unfamiliar" are all light and easy, even while tackling some pretty ugly subject matter (being overworked to the point of exhaustion and never able to pull yourself out of your situation; loneliness; unwanted attentions; family drama; loss of loved ones; even one witch's familiar is unpleasant and tells their secrets!). I was absolutely drawn in and definitely will be watching for volume two to see how these evolve and resolve!
The character designs were my favorite bits, especially Sun and the Witch Doctor. The emotion in Planchette's eyes was a real shining star, too!
Absolutely will be recommending this one to anyone who likes graphic novels, cute art styles, or witchy fun in general! I'll also be keeping an eye out for other works by Haley Newsome!
Kitchen witch Planchette moves into a haunted house and looks for other witches to help her clear the house of spirits - with some disastrous results.
This story by Haley Newsome was quite cute. Her illustrations are highly detailed and I had fun looking for things in the background of the panels. The characters are quirky and distinct. If you are looking for a light supernatural romp - try this comic.
I was given an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley and the Publisher for an honest opinion review.
This comic style book is the cutest thing ever. I am a huge fan of all things witchy and witch related so I naturally gravitated towards this book. This was a super cute and super funny comic that flowed super easy and was adorable to read. I feel that it could lean more towards younger YA readers but any age will enjoy it too. The art work in this book was adorable too. I caught myself slowly looking through the pages in stead of just fly reading like I normally do.
If you want a cute little cozy comic book and a night in around Halloween this book will give you all the feels.
This is an extremely gripping and interesting easy read. It starts with the main character, Planchete, moving into a new town. She finds out her house being haunted by ghosts who cannot rest so she sets out on an adventure and finds new friends. I love this book and think it was amazing. I chose this book because of the incredible art style on the cover and I loved the inclusion of the original character designs at the end. I would defiantly recommend.
Cute story, I really enjoyed the sub story about the twins. I wish sun's curse was made more clear as I still don't get why she does want to change her face. Would read volume 2 if it was available to find out more.
Cute coming of age witch comic with a really fun cast of characters. This is a truly adorable start and I can’t wait to see what comes next. The art style is fun and interesting and while the plot points aren’t particularly original, they’re handled in a fun way. I would recommend this cute comic to anyone who is struggling with figuring out their place in the world. The witches in it have a lot to share.
A lovable adventure that follows witches and ghouls as they strive for eternal peace, friendship, and a place they can call home. I used to be obsessed with the author's artsy YouTube videos, and seeing their debut comic years later is so cool!! The characters are loveable, the art style is adorable, and seeing the characters explore this ghostly town was so fun - highly recommend!
This is so adorable! The illustrations and colors are magnificent and fun to look at. I also loved the story and how Planchette is helping the ghosts in her house and the other side characters' shenanigans. I would definitely read the next volumes in this series! I highly recommend!
Adorable, fun, and creative! I thought this was an amazing graphic novel. The characters were super interesting and funny, I can’t wait for the next issue!
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was really cute book about a bunch of misfit witches who end up finding each other and working together to solve their issues! I really loved the art style and the story I'm looking forward to reading part 2!
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review!
Charming world with endearing characters. I can already tell that this is the kind of heartwarming story that you can keep coming back to for a good comfort read!
This was a fun book to read in the lead-up to Hallowe'en. The story is pretty light so it reads quickly. The art is fun and quirky. Recommended for those looking for a quick amusing read.
If you've spent time on Tapas, you've probably already spotted this witchy read. Unfamiliar is a fun series written and illustrated by Haley Newsome. It's a series I've been following for a while now on Tapas, but when I saw it was getting a graphic novel, I knew I had to re-read and support it!
Planchette is a young kitchen witch setting out on her own for the first time. While she can spell up all the pizza she wants, she otherwise feels wildly unprepared for the future. More accurately, she doesn't feel equipped to deal with her haunted house.
Thankfully, Planchette is far from the only witch or magical being in town, and this haunted house adventure is precisely what she needs to go out into the world and make some new friends. So that is what she'll do.
Unfamiliar is by far one of my favorite series on Tapas at the moment (seriously, if you're not reading it, you should go and check it out! It's free!). So I was absolutely tickled when I learned about this graphic novel.
To say that this graphic novel is charming would be an understatement. Planchette and all her newly made friends have so much personality – not to mention backstory. We have a cursed girl, a bird girl, and a shy siren. Plus, a sassy familiar. What more could you ask for? Oh right! Ghosts! There are plenty of those too.
If you love enchanting (pun intended) stories with complex and cute characters, Unfamiliar is the tale for you. Because it is based on an online comic series, the plot arcs are less sequential and brief, with a few exceptions. This helps make it a lighter read. Think a magical slice-of-life story, and you're pretty close.
This is graphic novel is the best for this season. A witch, Plachette, moves to a haunted house which is full of ghosts. She tries to get rid of them but although she's a witch she's not a good one. So she asks help.
It's a great and cute story. The illustrations are beautiful but a little less colorful but other than that it's excellent.
