This was a cute and cozy quick read that was great for me right now when i’m in a slump. Perfect for this season. I like that you follow all the characters, it’s a story for every character which i guess is why some think the story is all over. But i liked that, it was interesting. Look forward to vol 2.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and the author for giving me a chance to read this.
Thank you Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC!
Unfamiliar is a graphic novel about a young kitchen witch named Planchette who moves because she found a house at a great deal. The house looks perfect but... it's haunted! Through the graphic novel we follow her as she makes new friends in town and tries to exorcise the ghosts at home.
I am fairly familiar with Tapas but I had never heard of this particular author, but I'm impressed! The art style is absolutely gorgeous and unique and I love the overall color palette, which gave the story a spooky yet cute feeling. The characters are all interesting and it's lovely to follow them and learn about their story.
It was a quick but very nice and pleasant read and I'm really interested in checking out the author's works!
My rating is a 4.5 /5 stars
The perfect cosy read for spooky season. It felt like what I would imagine a pumpkin spiced latte to taste like. The characterisation was excellent, the familiars provided some much needed relief and the tendrils of friendship I see creeping out will provide for ample enjoyment in latter volumes.
I really enjoyed this whimsical, slice of life story about a lonely, young kitchen witch who accidentally moves into a rather haunted house which leads her to make new friends in town who can maybe help with the haunted house (I say maybe, as they all have their own things going on). Loved the muted colour palette - and all the different ways Haley Newsome draws pupils.
A quirky and charming graphic novel perfect for middle and high school students looking for sweet and funny stories about female friendship.
Follow Planchette, a kitchen witch, as she moves into her new homes and learns new skills with the help of some friends. I enjoyed the whimsical illustrations with adorable familiars (animals that accompany human magical beings). I also enjoyed seeing characters that aren't quite perfect, but are open to growing and learning new things.
Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a whimsical graphic novel that is beautifully illustrated and creatively written. The Story follows Planchette, a kitchen witch, who is moving into a new home and a new neighborhood. When she discovers her home is haunted chaos ensues as she collects locals to help her with an exorcism. She meets several adorable witches, each with their own interesting story and chapter. The witches and their familiars are all working together to read planchette's home of the ghost but also solve their own individual problems. I really loved all of the artwork in the book and how the characters interacted. I'd love to see more from this author and illustrator..
I loved, loved, loved the art in this book! This was such a cute story and I can’t wait to see more from this artist.
This was an utterly delightful graphic novel of four young witches who have been alone, struggling with their individual problems with magic and life in general. One by one, they come together, and even though their problems don't magically go away, they at least make new friends. Suitable for middle grade and up.
I loved the drawing style, all the details like the ever changing irises, and the colours. I read the ebook edition, but it's the kind of book you'd want to have as a physical copy to best enjoy the images.
Planchette, a kitchen witch has bought a little house in a new town. Excited about her great deal, she arrives to find her pretty little house is haunted. After her attempts fail to help the ghosts pass on, Planchette decides it's time to help the spirits with their unique problems instead. Enlisting the help of her friends Babs, Sun and Pinyon, all with troubles of their own, the team of four work together to help solve all of the tricky problems.
Unfamiliar is fun, cute and completely off-the-wall graphic novel. The glory of this story is that it is perfect for all ages and for those who love a thematic read. Being a lover of anything witchy, this inspired feelings of sweet, cozy games like Little Witch in The Woods and Wytchwood. All of the characters felt inclusive, coming in all shapes, sizes and emotional statuses. Overall, Newsome has done a wonderful job making sure everything is easy to follow, wonderful and colourful, leaving me feeling like I was wrapped in a warm blanket.
This one is for you if you love:
✔️ Kitchen witches
✔️ Ghosts and haunted houses
✔️ Friendships of all shapes and sizes
✔️ Quicky Familiars

I absolutely adored this book! It was a wonderful mixture of adorable and dark, making it an ideal read for this time of year.
This made me laugh out loud. Literally!
A favorite of the year, surely. I had so much fun with the quirky characters and the sweet story of finding a home and friends.
Such a great read.
Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a cute graphic novel with a host of quirky characters and a simple but charming premise. Young witch Planchette moves into an old house in a new town only to find it filled with ghosts that are beyond being removed by her kitchen magic spells. In search of help she makes some new friends including a shy siren, a witch cast off by her powerful family because of her apparent lack of magic and another witch battling a curse. Together and with the help of their rather cute familiars they figure out what it will take to rid the house of its unwelcome spectral guests , they will have to help to solve the problems that are keeping them bound to this plane.
This is the first in a planned series of graphic novels and it largely serves to introduce the characters and establish the relationships between them, and it succeeds in that objective particularly well. Each of the characters is distinctive in both design and personality, something that is helped by the very cute artwork throughout the book. While the plot is pretty simple it serves its function and has a good mix of humorous and emotional moments.
This is a charming read , perfect for the spooky season, especially for anyone who doesn't want anything gory or graphic.
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.
3.5 upward-leaning stars for this cute breath of fresh air.
I'm considering this one a bit of an amuse-bouche to enjoy in between heavier reads. It's cute and different but it never really made me super interested in it. That said, I do recommend it for anyone looking for low-stakes cuteness that still carries a wonderful message.
Plus, the art is adorable and expressive in a way that adds to the overall light feeling of the plot, where even dark topics such as murder and curses are presented in such a fluffy way that they add to the story but don't diminish the cuteness.
Happy thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the adorable early read!
This is such an adorable little graphic novel with all of the cute, cozy and spooky vibes! I will definitely be recommending this to anyone looking for a new graphic novel and I can’t wait for volume two!
This was absolutely adorable! I loved this so much! I loved the art style so much and the story was fun too. I loved watching how planchet figured out what to do with her ghost and as she made friends.
This book is perfect for the spooky season or all of us goth girls who wish we were cute witch girls.
THIS WAS THE SUCH A CUTE LITTLE BOOK ABOUT WITCHES AND WITCHES MAKING FRIEND, AN ADORABLE EVENING READ
I want tot start out by saying the illustrations are absolutely amazing. I think the story is cute. I did think that the story could have been more interesting and engaging. Something just felt missing. I eneded up getting bored reading it. I think this is definitely a YA story.
Here's a little about the plot:
Unfamiliar follows the young witch Planchette and her familiar Winston (a cute little rabbit) who have just moved into a haunted house. Planchette realizes that she needs help removing the ghosts as she is just a kitchen witch. Along her quest to find a better witch, Planchette makes friends who are as peculiar as she is.
Now, let's start the review:
What drew me in was the art style. It is one of the most adorable and unusual art styles I have ever seen and the color palette is beautiful.
While the art is beautiful, the plot lacks some depth and structure. What I mean by this, is that the story is all over the place. I don't want to spoil, but characters get introduced randomly and the plot gets confusing and a little boring. With that said I don't think this book is for an older audience, but maybe for someone younger.
All in all, it's an okay book and a quick read. A bit superficial but fine for a younger audience.
My thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC. This review contains my honest thoughts on this book.
This is really cute! I was unfamiliar with the series, but I’m glad I picked this up. Planchette is an adorable kitchen witch who moves to a new town to make friends. It’s an adorable plot as Planchette meets people around town, it introduces the other characters.
My only gripe about this is that I felt it ended rather too soon. I would love to recommend this to my students as the art style is spoooky and charming.
Unfamiliar is an adorable graphic novel about four girls who just happen to be witches dealing with some very large (and sometimes comical) problems.
I really adored the art style in this book! I've never read the original Tapas comic, so it was so much fun to jump into Newsome's very distinctive style. All the characters had their own personalities leap off the page with the styling and design choices and I really found myself connecting with them. I think Babs was my favorite character, I always enjoy when stories take the time to make the popular character have a varied backstory!
I can't wait to read volume two. This is a perfectly lighthearted little graphic novel for the Halloween season, but genuinely it's just enjoyable overall with it's distinctive style and cute characters.
