Brad's been trying to steal customers from Ellie and Jake's chocolate shop so of course when he's found shot with Ellie's gun (and she's standing over him), she's going to be the prime suspect. But Ellie didn't do it and neither did Jake, and so they investigate, learning that there was more to Brad than met the eye. The mystery won't stump veteran cozy readers but the family dynamics, particularly for Jake, are well done. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. While it's the latest in a series, it will be fine as a standalone. And recipes!
Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie by Sarah Graves is the sixth book in the Death by Chocolate Mystery Series. I enjoy every release in this series as the author includes many referances to chocolate and the charcters are smart, savvy and fun to follow. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinion is my own.
Jake and Ellie are friends managing their popular chocolate bakery "The Chocolate Moose" in the picturesque town of Eastport Maine. They are preparing for a town festival when they find out another baker is trying to take over bakery sales for the festival using neferious methods . Jake has words with him before he is found murdered. She is prime suspect number one as her gun was used and must work to clear her name. Having successfully solved cases in the past she finds clues abound amid red herrings and secrets about the victim. Soon Jake is in danger and the excitment builds to a exciting conclusion.
This was a well plotted fun sleuth that is captivating to conclusion. The charcters all add to the fun of this series. I enjoyed this next in series and recommend it for all cozy readers.
Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie by Sarah Graves is #6 in the Death by Chocolate Mystery Series. Jacobia “Jake” and Ellie run a bakery and an old acquaintance opens another one across the street. When he turns up dead Ellie is accused of his murder. While Jake’s background is interesting, I thought she acted rather recklessly with her life if she wanted to keep her background secret. Also, her clumsiness got really irritating. Overall, a good murder mystery. I received this eBook from Kensington Books, Kensington Cozies.
“Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie by Sarah Graves is due to be published April 25,2023 by Kensington Cozies.
In the island village of Eastport Maine is filled with delicious treats sold at The Chocolate Moose bakery owned by Jacobia Tiptree and Ellie White. Competition starts up when a man named Brad Fairway opens up Chico’s across the street who soon plans to buy out all the shops including the Moose. Then the next day Brad is found dead in his own bakery and Ellie ends up being the prime suspect.
This is the 6th book in the the Death by Chocolate mystery series but my 1st book I’ve read. But , will definitely not be my last I absolutely loved the fast paced adventure of it and the writing was great. I really thought I knew who the culprit was but I was so wrong. I really enjoyed this book.
Thank you NetGalley for this opportunity to read an advanced readers copy in exchange for my free review.
Sarah Graves' mysteries always make crave chocolate while I enjoy the well plotted and entertaining stories.
This is another good mysteries and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was glad to catch up with the charactets and the solid mystery kept me guessing.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
I found this book to be sadly lacking in everything-plot, character development and reader engagement. It may just be me-but I didn't enjoy it at all.
Death by Chocolate series #6. I really enjoy this series, and not only because of the constant references to chocolate (which never hurts), but because the characters are always so Reasonable. They behave the way normal intelligent people behave, mostly smart questions and investigatory steps with the occasional stroke of stupidity that best friend or hubby or the sheriff (ah, the humiliation factor!) must rescue them from. In this chapter of the series, a new bakery has opened up across the street and is undercutting The Chocolate Moose's business, so that when the owner is found dead, and the gun traced back to Jake's partner Ellie, can arrest be far away?
Things look so cut and dry, even the Sheriff is afraid the detectives won't look past Ellie for a killer and tells Jake to get busy if she wants to help her best friend. And for reasons none of the rest of them are aware of, she may be more involved than any of them realize. The usual twisty plot with a side of chocolate and this time marshmallows. Lots of marshmallows. And there's probably a bit more excitement (car chase!) and violence than the usual cozy, so I usual call these a "traditional" mystery. Highly recommended.
I became a fan of this after I read two books in the Death By Chocolate series: Death by Chocolate Frosted Donut and Death by Chocolate Chip Cupcake.
So when I heard about Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie, I just had to read it. A cozy mystery and chocolate? Yes, Please! The protagnist characters I've grown to love, Jake Tiptree and Ellie White owners of The Chocolate Moose are back with a new Murder mystery to solve. The setting, mystery, and summer season gives the book its charm. I enjoyed reading this book!
If you enjoy cozy mysteries and chocolate, give this book a try along with the series. This book can be read as a standalone, but I recommend checking out the other books in this series.
My thanks to Kensington Publishing and NetGallery for a digital copy of this book for my review. I look forward to more of Death by Chocolate Mystery series!
Small town culinary cozy
Ms. Graves gives us a variety of characters to spice up her mystery.
Jake has secrets of her own, her husband Wade and good friend Bob, the Chief of Police are well aware of. She fears the secrets may be back to haunt her when she and Ellie find a dead body, one with questionable connections. The ladies are determined to find out what happened for both their sakes, as Ellie is the lead suspect of the state police.
More mystery, more bodies and the ladies are desperate. Their suspects are dying and despite their intense investigation, they are having a problem getting answers.
Well woven, fast moving and humorous. I highly recommend. Interesting recipe at end.
I requested and received a NetGalley ARC to peruse gratis and offer my opinion in the same.
Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie by Sarah Graves is book #6 in the Death by Chocolate series. This is a fast-paced, intricate cozy mystery. It's full of twists and turns. Also some surprises! I like the characters in this book. They are well-developed and likable. Also I really like Sarah Graves' writing style. I really liked this book! It's a great addition to the series!
Jake and Ellie find themselves involed in another murder mystery when a new chocolate shop opens across from them and the own is found dead.shot with Ellie gun.
Lots of twists,drama,mystery.
Good mystery suspense.
Voluntarily reviewed.
I received an advance copy from NetGalley.
This is the 6th book in the Death by Chocolate series, set in a small Maine town where lead character Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree runs a bakery with her dear friend Ellie and contends with a lot of family drama, too. As the book starts out, a jerk has opened a rival shop across the street and badmouthed their business. After some unpleasant confrontations about his practices, the guy, of course, ends up dead—by Ellie’s gun. Jake needs to get her friend off the hook, fast.
I had no problem getting into the groove of the mystery. The setting and characters engaged me from page 1, and I wanted to find out whodunnit. What did frustrate me, though, was how Jake kept doing things that verged on stupid and made her friend look even more guilty. Some behavior like that is part of being an amateur detective but it needs to be handled with care, and the sheer foolhardiness of the characters began to annoy me. I finished the book, though, and I liked how the complicated pieces came together in the end.
Jacobia, 'Jake', Tiptree, has a dream of a job which she gets to share with her best friend, Ellie White as they run a bakery together. The Chocolate Moose, with its small seating area, is perfectly situated on the waterfront of their hometown of Eastport, Maine. Jake also has a checkered past but she'd rather not dwell on that. It's the beginning of summer and, as the weather gets warmer, they are getting ready to sell their wares at the local art festival.
Unfortunately, directly across the street from the Moose, a rival establishment, Choco’s, has just opened, and owner, Brad Fairway, is not above running a dirty tricks campaign to poach their customers. Determined to sort things nicely, Jake and Ellie try to speak with the owner about his actions, but things don't go quite to plan! When a body is discovered by the intrepid pair, they find themselves in the local police department's eyeline, and one of them is soon the number one suspect.
Although this is the sixth in Sarah Graves series, it is my first visit to Eastport, and although I had my suspicions as to whodunnit, I wasn't confident or correct! I really enjoyed this book, but there were a couple of instances towards the beginning, which seemed a little too far fetched, hence 4 stars. I really liked the parts featuring Jake's family and their problems, none of which detracted from the murder investigation but definitely added to the storyline. I will be reading the previous books in this series and on the lookout for new ones.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a good read, which I very much enjoyed.
DEATH BY CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW PIE is the sixth book in the Death by Chocolate Mysteries by Sarah Graves. While I have read none in this series before (and I’ll be starting with the first one to catch up now!) I was completely engrossed with this book from the very page. The author does an admirable job in making this easy to read as a standalone. Besides an intriguing current day murder to solve, there’s shocking backstory pertaining to the protagonist, Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree, that might prove fatal to her. It definitely grabbed my attention while never detracting from the main thread of the plotline.
Ms. Graves writes a compelling tale filled with competing chocolate bakeries, an art festival, emotional family issues, and murder. There are clues for the armchair detective to follow, red herrings to throw you off the scent, and plenty of suspects to choose from. With humor to lighten the story, I loved the repartee between Jake and her best friend and business partner, Ellie. Together they not only concoct tempting treats, but somehow fall into zany antics while hunting down the killer. With a hair-raising reveal, the various threads of the subplots align in one highly satisfying conclusion.
I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a great series if you like chocolate, food and cozy mysteries. I really enjoyed this book because it was like being back with old friends and trying to solve a mystery.
Absolutely loved this book! These books are in a series. I actually just started reading this series! I just started reading the first book and loved it. I I really like the characters and the story is excellent!
The chocolate pastry shop of Ellie and Jake (Jacobia) was doing well and slowly marching toward safe margins of profit when snakey Brad Fairway opened Choco's and began a smear campaign to close The Chocolate Moose.
When Ellie--ever the peacemaker--arranged to meet with Brad, he was shot dead, with her gun. State investigators saw circumstantial evidence and focused on Ellie, but a visiting artist was suddenly missing, then there were assaults on other artists. How were they related?
Jake had additional unrest at home. Her father announced his move to a rest home, and Sam came home? Her house was in an uproar, her business in jeopardy, her best friend suspected of murder, her son's marriage in trouble, and her car didn't always start! What's a reformed accountant for the mob supposed to do? No! Not that! She finds out what's going on, and survives!
Another delightful visit to Eastport, Maine; a complex swirl of conspiracy and mayhem,
heart-pounding treks through buildings, and night fog so thick your clothes are dripping in the muffled cold. Not knowing where the killer will come upon you... Brilliant storytelling!
Caution: Some swearing.
5/5 Stars

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of DEATH BY CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW PIE (Book 6 of the Death by Chocolate mysteries), by Sarah Graves, in exchange for an honest review. Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and Ellie White own and operate bakery called The Chocolate Moose. Lately, a new bakery is giving the longtime friends competition and using underhanded tactics to try to shut down Jake and Ellie's business. Jake finally has enough and confronts the rival owner, Brad Fairway, to no effect. When Brad is murdered with Ellie's gun the following day, both Jake and Ellie become suspects. Jake is determined to identify the real killer; it's self-preservation.
I like this book and this series. I recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, bakeries, and coastal towns.

Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie by Sarah Graves is the sixth in the Death by Chocolate mystery series. Jake is afraid her past may have caught up with her when she recognizes a new business owner in town as someone with a mob connection. When that person is murdered Jake’s friend and business partner Ellie is the prime suspect. Time is running out for Jake and Ellie to unmask the real killer before Ellie is taken into custody.
There’s no shortage of suspects or red herrings in this engaging mystery. I really like the Maine setting and the bakery partnership between Jake and Ellie. The intergenerational aspects with Jacob and Bella always add an interesting twist. The storyline with Sam and Mika fell a bit flat for me with this book but I’m looking forward to seeing more of them in the next installment. (I reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.). This charming cozy is one that you won’t want to put down until you turn the last page.
Death by Chocolate Marshallow Pie is the sixth installment in the A Death by Chocolate Mystery series set in Eastport, Maine and featuring Jacobia "Jake" Tiptree, co-owner of the Chocolate Moose. A new chocolate shop, Choco's has opened across the street and the new owner, Brad Fairway is actively spreading nasty rumors about Jake and Ellie's shop in an effort to ruin their business. Determined to find out why the man is intent upon destroying the Moose, Jake ventures across the street only to discover that Brad is someone she knows from her past as a money manager for the mob. Fortunately, Brad doesn't seem to recognize Jake but unfortunately, when Ellie goes back later to try her hand at reasoning with the man she discovers him dead. Police Chief Bob Arnold doesn't believe the ladies are guilty of murder, but the Federal Agents do and Jake and Ellie must work quickly to uncover the real killer.
There are plenty of suspects but they all seem to turn up dead or injured either before the ladies question them or immediately after. While Jake tries to save her best friend, she's also trying to figure out what is going on with her son Sam and his marriage, and also why her father is determined to move out of the house either with or without his wife Bella.
A good addition to the series that can be read as a stand alone. I wonder why the recipe at the back is not for the chocolate marshallow pie that figures prominently through the book but instead for a chocolate marshmallow gingerbread. Luckily, I'm reading this the week before Christmas, so I might give the gingerbread a try.
I received an advanced copy of Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie from Kensington Publishing via NetGalley. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.
