Chase Her Shadow by D.K.Hood is the 17th book in the police procedural Alton and Kane series. A well written novel with skillfully drawn characters , tension filled ,tightly woven plot makes this a great addition to the series. Looking forward to reading the next one!
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review
Chase her shadow book 17 in the Kane and Alton series!
I really enjoyed this installment and apologie for the extremely late review.
When a miltory widow is found dead in the forest the sherifs department are on the case, so many unanswered questioned who would want Willow dead? What had she done? Is it to do with her? So when another miltory wife is found dead, they think they have the connection strange thing is she's being hearing her dead husband speak to her. That begs the questions is he really dead or is someone trying to make her think he was alive?
I loved this installment one of my favourite so far! I loved the fact that Dave had to use his top secret clearance to find out more about these dead soilders and reading them piece it altogether. Plus it reminds us how important Wolf truly is!
It was great as well to have Jp and Carter be back on the team and let's just say Carter is a bit of a ghost during this book the question is what is he actually up to.
The whole gang is just amazing and Halloween in Blackrock Falls is a time I definately do not want to be there. There is always something going on and I must admit the Halloween installments are my favourite in the series.
Jenna and Kane are literally the nest crime fictional duo I have had the good fortune to read and their constant search for the killer had me hooked start to finish. The description by D.K Hood made me feel like I was actually there when evweyrhinf was going down.
To say more would spoil this book and if you're like me and read the first 16, 17 will jot disappoint easy peas 5 stars 🌟
Thank you to D.K Hood, netgalley and bookouture for rhe arc of chase her shadow.
Book seventeen in the Detective Kane and Alton books
And another brilliant book
Love these books and each one never disappoints
Can’t wait for the next in the series
Thanks NetGalley
I usually read these books as soon as they are published but I’ve got a bit behind. I have loved reading the last three in a row!
Another gripping storyline with my favourite characters. The stories are always original and this one is no exception. On to the next one!
I thought this book was incredibly thrilling and hard to put down. The characters are realistic and relatable. The twists and turns kept me guessing who the culprit was. I read through this in an afternoon and it was a totally awesome read .
I loved how this one combined Halloween with a murder. I loved the unpredictability of this book. I am loving this series and how you can still read these as standalones. Very much a character driven plot.
This is the seventeenth book in the series featuring Detectives Jenna Alton and Dave Kane. It is Halloween in Black Water Falls and Jenna and Dave are called out when the body of Willow Smith, a military widow whose husband and his team went missing in Afghanistan some years previous, is discovered. She had been convinced that she had heard his voice and felt his presence. Suicide is their first thought especially as she is wearing her husband’s purple heart but when the body of another military widow whose husband was one of the missing team, is found wearing his purple heart they realise that they may have a serial killer on the loose. They realise this is a complicated case when they discover that another suspicious military widow’s death seven years previously whose husband was one of the team also. Jenna and Dave know they are hunting someone with a military background and need to discover what happened to the missing soldiers and whether any are still alive. This series gets better and better and the cases get creepier and darker with each book. I have run out of superlatives as to how much I love this series. Chase Her Shadow is an excellent addition to the series and I can’t wait for book 18.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunities to read and review this book.
Chase Her Shadow (Detectives Kane and Alton Book 17) by D. K. Hood
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Mystery & Thrillers

Chase Her Shadow is the 17th book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D. K. Hood. I had not read the previous books and was able to easily read this as a standalone mystery.
I don't even know where to start. This book grabbed me on page one and did not let go until the last page...and made me reach for the next book in the series because I wasn't ready to leave LOL
This book is dark and eerie and a little scary and wonderful! I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting to see how things would unravel. I loved learning about the characters in this small town, and if it wasn't such an attractive environment for serial killers, I would want to visit there!
This is a fast read and I could not get enough of it! I can't wait to read the rest of the series! I highly recommend reading Chase Her Shadow!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you so much @netgalley, @bookouture and the author for the ARC! ❤️❤️
'Chase Her Shadow' has a really interesting plot and I love it! Considering the number of stories published, you would think that serial killing would get boring and repetitive but D.K Hood always introduces different ideas on what might provoke one to be a serial killer. In this case, someone's killing the wives of presumably dead military soldiers. The cause behind murders is confusing, albeit nerve-wracking and rich in details.
I loved the narration, especially the victims POVs. It's so good that I went through the entire book in two sittings regardless of my hectic schedule.
However, Jenna and Dave's conversations still seem awkward and kinda out of place. I don't like how Dave speaks to Jenna either in a condescending or judgemental tone. Jenna should be more confident in her abilities and Dave should give her space to shine. Also, the inner monologues could be a bit better. It's a bummer when you love everything about a series but not how the main characters talk to each other. Kills the mood.
Anyways, I'm super excited to read the next one. Hope you'll give it a read too! ❤️ Definitely recommended.
Another good book with the same cast of characters with a setting now Halloween. Jeana and Dave are working on finding who is killing the women of the fallen soldiers who all seem to be from the same unit and also were listed as missing. Each has died differently yet the common in each is that they know each other, as well as their husbands, and had served together who would do this? This was a good story with Duke and their dog, Dave always hungry especially for pie, who doesn’t like a good pie. Still, it is all of the people around them that make this book once again a worthy read.
Why wasn’t this a Halloween release? I flove this series! So book 17, and the cast just seems to get bigger and bigger… so start at the beginning!
What did I like? I love the camaraderie of the group but the tension in this book was palpable! I love the cases they solve and the people they help along the way. This was also the spookiest story by far. Kane and Alton definitely have their work cut out for them when catching the bad guys! Four stars!
Would I recommend or buy? I have this series on my shelf and it’s a favorite of mine! Hope the author comes to the US some day so I can meet her. Great series!
I received an early copy to read and will definitely buy my own on release! This review is my opinion!
Wow, this book was super creepy! Fancy getting phone calls from your dead husband in the middle of the night??
Jenna and Dave are on the case of war widows whose husbands are apparently coming back from the dead. How these women are connected and who is wishing them harm, will surprise!
Great book, I really enjoyed this one. I always like the books in the series anyway, but this was a particularly interesting premise!
4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
Another fantastic installment in the Kane & Alton series. I loved the atmospheric murder settings in this Halloween-based book. A page turner and complete whodunnit.
Absolute brilliant halloween entertainment! Kane and Alton, Black ROck Falls at Halloween, what can go wrong! Brilliant murder mystery as they always are. DK Hood you do it every time! Brilliant fun!
I love this series so much, I can't get enough of Kane and Alton!
I am so happy to be back in Black Rock Falls, Montana, I feel like I know the place and their characters so well. I love Sheriff Jenna Alton, she is simply a fantastic character and I wish I could meet someone like her in real life! Her husband, and deputy, David Kane, a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills. is simply adorable and they make a wonderful couple. :)
This book has quite a spooky feel of Halloween with murders happening in the woods and is simply fabulous.
I just love this series, the scenery and the main characters. The murder mysteries are as ever solid and so enjoyable. I am sad as ever to have finished this book and long for the next one...
Well done D K Hood, it's a wonderful talent to write such amazing stories, please hurry up writing their next adventure!!!
Chase Her Shadow is the seventeenth book in the police procedural series featuring Detectives David Kane and Jenna Alton. I picked up this series with Whisper in the Night (book 6) and I also thoroughly enjoyed books seven through to sixteen.
So I'm back in Black Rock Falls, Montana, with Sheriff Jenna Alton who makes a very amenable and winsome detective. Her husband, and deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills. In this instalment, a military widow is dead in the woods.
This was fast-paced, well-balanced, spooky, gritty and tense. It had me glued to the pages and I didn't want to put it down as I was desperate to know the outcome of the story. You could read Chase Her Shadow as a standalone... but you'll be missing out so much if you don't read some of the other instalments as well. I will be seeking out the first five instalments of this masterful series when I get the chance. A brilliant, compelling, pulse-pounding and very highly recommended crime-thriller.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
FABULOUS addition to this superlative series. Totally RECOMMEND all for a first rate reading experience.
Love this series and this book is just incredible. I absolutely adored it. I could not put it down.Fast paced and thrilling, this is a superb read.
It's the first book I read in this series and I'm wondering why I didn't start before as it was a twisty and dark story that kept me on the edge till the last page.
I was surprised by the twists and spooked by the atmosphere. The MCs are well rounded and likeable, the plot is solid and never fails to keep the attention alive.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
A military widow believes she is being haunted. Then she is found dead, an apparent suicide but the evidence suggests murder. Dave Kane is concerned that his own military secret identity is at risk...
Chase Her Shadow is the 17th book in the Kane and Alton series. There are no spoilers about cases from previous books. However, the main characters' past plays a key role in this book although I feel that there is enough information for it to work as a stand alone (but I think you should read them all!)
Willow Smith's husband died on Halloween. Now on this Halloween she hears his voice, feels his presence and senses he is near. Her body is found a few hours later and the early assumption of suicide is soon discredited and a murder investigation begins.
Kane is convinced that a link with Willow's husband's military death is key. But his investigation threatens his own protection. The majority of the book is written in the third person to show the victims and police but a third of the way through there is a first person chapter which is really sinister.
The tone of this book is much more spooky than previous books in the series. Isolated locations, creaking old buildings and ghostly footsteps: I really felt the creepy atmosphere and think I will reread this next Halloween!
Chase Her Shadow is a great addition to the series.
