I find it hard at times with long running series as they don’t tend to stay true to what I feel were the characters. This series has never had a bad book and I find that the characters always have stayed true to their design.
In this book it started with Jenna and Dave and her reliving a murderer who has escaped her. I really think it shows how great this book is and how Jenna is received. She is a professional and she shows so much skill and diplomacy
I love the main characters so much as they change as needed but it’s an organic change that makes you see this happening .
Kane is the one who impresses me the most at times since he pushes to be better than he was and he is protective of those he loves.
I do get annoyed with Jo in this book which is a rarity as I find that her belief that her friend is part of the crimes just made me dislike her.
Seeing Carter in the state he is in was hard to see especially with the PTSD that he has. He just didn’t seem right in his mind but I do like the fact that he is human and shows weakness as well.
The story is very sad as it deals with the military and dependants. It was a hard story for me even though I loved it I found it more difficult and it had me wanting to cry in a few places.
Uffff what a ride!!! Is this the darkest in the Kane and Alton series? Quite possibly yes!! Why I hear you ask? Let me tell you…
It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and ghosts are haunting military widows to the extreme. These women are ending up dead!! Talk about a scary spooky combination for Kane and Alton to investigate and this pair are like Mulder and Scully when it comes to their supernatural beliefs!
Chase Her Shadow is a dark, very dark read. Getting into the killer’s head was a scary thing. They’re twisted, very twisted – but that’s normal for Black Rock Falls. For me this time, it’s prospect that these women live in hope that their husbands are still alive and that this is their homecoming that increases the chill factor. The way they’re tempted from their homes at the dead is night just gets me to the core!! 😱😱😱
Hood has gone into the depths of a warped killer’s mind and curated one hell of a thriller. I got goosebumps and chills as the story developed and I think I forgot to breath as it climaxed. This series gets better and better and the cases get creepier and darker with each book. I have run out of superlatives as to how much I love this series. Chase Her Shadow is an excellent addition to the series and I can’t wait for book 18… and this new series Hood has been writing!!
Halloween week in Black Rock Falls. Willow Smith is preparing to go on a trip to Vegas with some friends - the following morning she's found dead in bed. For the last few weeks she's been saying that her special forces husband has been calling her at midnight; no-one believes her as her husband was listed as MIA in Afghanistan seven years ago. When Shane Wolfe the ME questions whether her death is a suicide and another military widow who was friends with Willow is found dead Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane start to think that there's another killer loose in their town.
This is book 17 in this series by D K Hood and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and Detective Kane are some of my favourite pair of investigators lately. This is book number 17 and while I haven’t read them all, the last ones got me so invested in their stories that I can’t miss any opportunity to read about them anymore.
Each story bring on a very interesting plot and one that has me gripped throughout the book. It’s so good that I couldn’t put it down until I found out what’s going on and who is that shadow. Nevertheless, the pace keeps getting better and better, there are a few unexpected twists and some intriguing characters.
Why would anyone want to live alone, secluded from any human contact? Is there something that happened in the past and they want to lay low or it’s just a way of getting away with murder? Those were my questions from the beginning. And I did got my answers by the end, and more.
The addition of a group of military soldiers that were killed in Afghanistan really had me on the edge because anything could happen then.
This story was scary and great at the same time. The investigation had a few moments when I feared for the main character’s life and then, the small puzzles that are added made for an even more intriguing story.
Looking forward to seeing where the author takes us next with this favourite duo.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley and my place in the blog tour.
A military widow died
Was it suicide?
Something seems wrong
Was it murder all along?
A search for her friend
She also met a sticky end
Fell - or pushed - from on high
Why did she also have to die?
What a spooky read this one proved to be
Filled with Hallowe'en, ghosts and mystery.
Missing soldiers seem to be the connection
But targeting their wives is against military convention.
Why kill the wives?
What happened to their husband's lives?
Are they alive or just missing - or dead?
Can you trust what anyone said?
Another enthralling, gripping read
One that all crime thriller lovers really need.
With Alton, Kane and the rest of the team
Looking beyond the obvious, not all is as it might seem.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
What an intriguing page turner - this is my honest review.
Kane and Altons newest case falls right on Halloween, with plenty spooky and scary scenes. Wives of missing soldiers are being murdered while making it look like suicide. The clock is ticking on finding the killer before more women lose their lives.
Jennas team works great together (as always) and I also liked the appearences of FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter. Although the main storyline did come together pretty quickly without major surprises and it was clear what was happening, this was a solid read and I enjoyed it very much.
I am looking forward to the next book with Jenna and Dave and can’t wait to spend time in serial killer central again.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author D. K. Hood for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is another great book by this fabulous author. Thoroughly recommended.
Book 17 in this well established series.
The Detective Kane and Alton series is a firm favourite of mine having joined the team in Black Rock Falls since book ten and every book I have devoured has been first class.
The descriptive writing in the setting and the fact that it's Halloween adds to the spooky vibes within the story.
The was another addictive mind chilling read Hood is and exceptionally talented author a well deserved five stars from me.
I love love love this series......a great story line with twists. I didn't want it to finish. I look forward to reading more.
What a twisty lead up the garden path this was, on more than one occasion! I had thought on one of the side plots that the author was going to announce some big news, but alas it wasn’t to be. The big reveal with whom was behind everything, I thought the author was actually going to go there and do something left field, but to my relief, it wasn’t – and boy was I relieved!
I do love being back with Kane and Alton and this was a tough case and quite a terrifying one in some respects. I love the discussions of ghosts and Atohi’s thoughts behind some mythology with Black Rock Falls. I also loved how grounded Kane was, this was to ensure Jenna…and us didn’t get too caught up in the ghost and ghouls and that we stay grounded.
I blitzed this book in a day, with a mixture of reading and audiobook. I mean I love Patricia Rodriguez so I HAD to get the audiobook. She really does bring the characters and fear alive!
I seriously had no clue how this would play out and I had no idea who would be behind the grand reveal. I was stumped. Well apart from the initial inclination as to who it might be, my jaw dropped! I was sitting there saying no no no as I didn’t want it to be true!! The killer was sadistic, but I am still not 100% sure why they did what they did, part revenge, part some loose wiring in the brain, 100% cold and chilling! I wouldn’t want to be near that person – *shiver* But I think I will re-read the last few chapters to get my understanding of the whys!
It is always enjoyable to be back with the team, and Rowley I feel your frustration too! I hope we get to see more of him, do you think if I mention it in every one of my reviews it might happen 😉
I’ve fallen out of love with this series and I’m not sure I’ll read any more. I struggle with the characters. Dave & Jenna don’t come across as married and I can’t cope with Jenna constantly being the damsel in distress when she is supposed to be a badass DEA agent. I also found Wolfe patronizing and he’s usually my favourite. They weren’t very good friends to Carter either. The actual murder part kept me guessing and I liked the creepy ghost like element. Unfortunately, the characters just don’t do it for me anymore.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Chase Her Shadow is book 17 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series. Each book can be read as a standalone. Though I do recommend reading the series in order so you get to know the background story of the main characters.
Its Halloween in Black Rock Falls, Montana. There is a spookiness in the air for sure. The investigation Detectives Kane and Alton are trying to figure out is definitely a intriguing and intricate one. With the deaths of 2 military wives, the detectives are wondering if Halloween pranks are occurring or could there be something more sinister happening? The creepy factor was way up with Chase Her Shadow. This crime thriller will have you up all night reading.
D.K. Hood always delivers a intense crime psychological thriller that I highly recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and author, D.K. Hood, for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review, All opinions expressed are my own.
Halloween in Black Rock Falls, and you might not want to start reading this in the evening … just saying.
A body is found, on her clothes is pinned her husbands ‘Purple Heart’ – he was killed during on Halloween during his tour in Afghanistan. The next day another body,…
Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team are racing against time.
You will not want to put this book down until the end!
This book was creepy, I loved it. Is it supernatural or a serial killer...either way evil surrounds them all.
A team go missing on a mission, at leas that is what their wives are told. A cover up, what really happened. How are they seemingly returning to haunt and kill their widows? Kane and Alton are on the case, will they both survive. Something or someone is in the woods watching.
This story was such a page turner, I had no idea as red herrings were tossed into the mix. Such a heart racing thriller, I loved it.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'Chase Her Shadow' by DK Hood.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for DK Hood, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 9th December 2022.
This is the seventh book I have read by this author. It is also the seventeenth book in the 'Detective Kane and Alton' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read 'Cross My Heart' (book 12 in the series), 'Fallen Angel' (book 13 in the series), 'Don't Look Back (book 13.5 in the series), ' Pray For Mercy '(book 14 in the series), 'Kiss Her Goodnight' (book 15 in the series) and 'Her Bleeding Heart' (book 16 in the series) and I would highly recommend them all.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot, Chase Her Shadow is a truly unputdownable crime thriller from USA Today bestselling author D.K. Hood. Prepare to be hooked!' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of DK Hood and if this is half as good as 'Cross My Heart', 'Don't Look Back', 'Pray For Mercy', 'Fallen Angel', 'Kiss Her Goodnight' and 'Her Bleeding Heart' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 39 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is set in Montana, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the protagonists are Sheriff Jenna Alton, Detective David Kane and the killer. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
OMG!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVED THIS BOOK and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SERIES!!! D.K HOOD you just keep getting better and better!!!
This book is fantastically written and had me hooked from the first page until the last. DK Hood way of writing is perfectly evocative and she has such a creative imagination!! The descriptions were so vivid and realistic I felt myself feeling the cold and damp and reaching for a blanket to warm me up. This has got to be one of the best storylines I have ever read!!!! Just when you've read the best book in this series and it can't get any better BANG DK Hood does it again!! OMG the suspense, especially when I thought I knew who the killer left me with my heart in my throat and my pulse racing!! I can't say much more apart from I was thinking along the same lines as Jo and I'm so relieved we were both wrong!!! Needless to say I absolutely LOVED the storyline. This book is absolutely perfect for any crime lovers as you are literally reading about crime, twists and murder!!! It just does not get better than that!!! Just seriously, I cannot say how brilliant all this book was!!! The storyline is packed with tension, suspense, murder, tension and filled with twists and turns. I was absolutely shocked when everything was revealed and was not expecting it at all!!! I genuinely thought for once I had actually worked out who it was in this amazing series but YET AGAIN DK Hood proves me wrong!! A HUGE congratulations to D.K Hood, it is getting harder and harder to shock me but you did it well!!! . D.K Hood has obviously done her research on police procedurals which is yet another bonus as I've read many crime novels where the authors make massive mistakes due to not doing enough research. I am ABSOLUTELY LANDED that Jenna and Kane finally got married previously but as with everything in Jenna and Kane's life's nothing can go off without a hitch and my heart absolutely went out to them after a certain event and now I have my fingers crossed they'll get the family they want so bad. Well, I say that but at the same time I'd be worried about how much a baby would change Jenna and how she works so maybe not. I'll just have to see just like you will have to pick up this book to find out what made my heart go to my throat and had my pulse racing! This is an absolutely unputdownable page turner and I cannot wait to read the previous and future books in what is promising to be an addictive series.
Although this is the seventeenth book in the series I would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I absolutely LOVED meeting the characters again and they are all realistic and I became completely invested in them. I love that Jenna is such a strong female lead that has history and has been through so much but doesn't cower and stands strong. I have enjoyed watching her relationship with Kane has evolved and I am looking forward to going back to how they met and moving forward to see where it goes especially in regards to potentially starting a family. Kane is another fantastic character that I became invested in and I adore how protective of Jenna he is. The team dynamics worked well and I also enjoyed getting to know more about Rio, Wolfe and Rowley and I look forward to meeting them all again. I must say my favourite had to be Duke though!!!! What an absolutely fantastic addition, I just love it when pets play such large parts in books. Regardless of whether you love or hate any of the characters they all work perfectly to make this storyline an absolutely addictive, explosive page turner!!! The majority of the characters have become like friends to me and I'm always sad to say goodbye never knowing when I'll "see" them again so I really hope the next book is being written as I speak. Hint hunt 😉 DK Hood!!!
Congratulations D.K Hood on what promises to be another huge success!!! Very rarely an authors books get better but you have certainly mastered it!!! I cannot wait to get stuck into more of your books and this is exactly why you are one my favourite crime authors!!! Here's to your next guaranteed success 🥂
This book is definitely in my top 5 and considering I've read 1000's this is a HUGE achievement!!! This series is also in my top 3 ♥
Do not start this until you have cleared yours schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!
Overall an absolutely addictive, heart racing and unputdownable crime thriller that will keep you up all night.

would like to thank netgalley and the publishers for letting me read this very spooky read
hallooween is spooky at the best of times but around black rock falls and that spooky mist just adds to the atmosphere
when the body of a woman is found with her husband purple heart on her chest jenna and dave know that there is more to this than just a suicide, and with the news that she was receiving nightly phone calls from her dead husband they know they have a serious killer somewhere in the woods
its not long before another body of woman is found again another wife of a dead service man and with the dark evenings and halloween its not going to be easy to find this perp
man oh man this was the spookiest read ever but what a book, even i was frightened at some bits in the book
cant wait for the next book in this thrilling series
As if having a killer targeting military widows isn't bad enough, the killings are taking place just days before Halloween. And some of the locations are spooky and isolated. This is not a story you want to read alone, late at night, with the house making noises. I loved the suspense and the twists along the way. Jenna and Kane have a complicated relationship, with each of them taking steps to protect the other while still being concerned for their safety. There is also a great cast of secondary characters that all to the overall storyline. I'm looking forward to the next book.
A heart wrenching mystery for Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband, Chief Deputy David Kane. A woman whose husband is listed as MIA has committed suicide. She was terrorized in her own home and claimed to be visited by her husband’s ghost, but was it suicide or was she murdered? When a second death of a military widow happens all too soon, does Black Rock Falls have another serial killer? Who would do such a thing to women who are already suffering the loss of their husbands? It is Halloween and the town goes all out to celebrate, but the rush is on to track down any other women whose husbands are MIA before the killer strikes again. They soon realize that the woman’s husbands were part of a group of soldiers that were killed in Afghanistan years ago. They can’t contact the government as there is the fear that Jenna and David’s true identities may also be in jeopardy. Can Jenna and David find the killer before he can strike again? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
I felt just about every sensation while reading this book. Hood has a way of sucking me into the very heart of the story.
First, I shivered with the spookiness of the remote settings and the groaning of the houses plus the dynamics Of the first two crime scenes.
Then I was excited at the prospect of what I was certain was going in with Jenna.
My toes curled with this sentence about Kane “ "No one touches my wife, my
dog, or my truck." How I love that man!! He is such an alpha male, so confident, assured, and stealthily.
I was sad at the loss Of an entire unit all due to one ,age’s selfishness.
I was crestfallen at one development didn’t happen. But I ended the book excited with the continued adventures of the team plus perhaps a new prospect on the horizon for Wolfe.
4.5 Stars
It’s Halloween in Black Rock Falls and Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are called to a small lodge on the outskirts of town. Jenna is devastated to find the lifeless body of Willow Smith, a military widow whose husband went missing in action and has been presumed dead for years. Her breath catches in her throat when she notices the heart-shaped purple medal on Willow’s pale chest.
Desperately chasing down every lead, Jenna hears that Willow had been receiving silent phone calls in the dead of night. Witnesses say Willow thought her missing husband was trying to make contact. Days later, another woman’s body is found at the bottom of a perilous ravine. Jenna’s worst fear is confirmed the moment she spots a purple medal: a dangerous serial killer is preying on the wives of soldiers from the same platoon, and if she doesn’t act fast, more lives will be at risk. The key lies in discovering what happened to the missing soldiers, and whether any of them made it back alive
The seventeenth book in this fantastic series, it could easily be read on its own. Another well written edge of the seat read which I devoured in two sittings & finished it well into the night. The characters are well portrayed & I loved Jenna & Dave. A spooky read, after all it’s set at Halloween, with red herrings, twists & turns before the denouement. Another highly recommended book in the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
