This had some great recipes, I was able to make a few and everyone loved them! I really liked the variety of recipes and will definitely be picking up a copy to add to my cookbook collection!
Thank you, NetGalley, for an e-ARC of The Blue Zones American Kitchen (Sampler) by Dan Buettner
A beautifully illustrated cookbook that gives recipes designed to create a healthier lifestyle. Buettner goes across the United States finding plant-based recipes that help negate chronic food related illnesses. The book not only gives recipes, but explains about unusual ingredients and offers substitutions for hard to find items.
Not really a cookbook in my opinion. I wish it had more recipes and less narrative. Interesting concept though.
This is Dan Buettner’s second Blue Zones cookbook in which he shares recipes from longevity hotspots around the United States. A Blue Zone is an area that has been identified as being a locale in which the inhabitants live significantly longer than in other areas, sometimes beyond 100 years.
This particular cookbook is from places in the United States and brings us recipes representative of the different areas and ethnicities. The first Blue Zones cookbook was global and presented recipes from Japan, Okinawa, Costa Rica, Sardinia, and Loma Linda, California. The recipes in both books use quality whole food ingredients and cooking techniques meant to maintain and improve your health.
I received a sample of this cookbook from the publisher via NetGalley; it contained some narrative and I believe seven recipes. Even though this sample was small the photos were GORGEOUS. Of course, with it being published by National Geographic, you would expect they would use only the best photos.
All of the recipes in the sample looked good, but I decided to make the Butter Beans with Benne Seeds and Okra. Benne Seeds are a heritage type of sesame seed that sadly is difficult for me to obtain. I decided to use sesame seeds knowing the flavor wouldn’t be exact. Per the recipe, I toasted and then crushed those sesame seeds; I couldn’t really “pound” them, but I did crush them using my mortar and pestle.
This was an easy recipe and so delicious! I decided I would serve this stew over brown rice for lunch; it was very filling and had a fresh flavor. The only other changes I made to this recipe was to add some vegetable base and some garlic base, both vegan, to add depth.
My husband and I discussed this recipe and the cookbook while we were eating, and when we were done he said “Go ahead and get the cookbook if you want it.” Which I promptly did! Now I am impatiently awaiting its arrival. I recommend it based upon the sample recipes I saw and the previous Blue Zones cookbook which I bought about 2 weeks ago.
A big thank you to Dan Buettner, National Geographic, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a sample of this cookbook pre-publication. I received nothing for my review and my opinions are my own.
I have purchased the original Blue Zones Kitchen cookbook for myself and am looking forward to seeing the full version of this one. Our library has two copies of the original and they are nearly always checked out. It was fun to see a sneak peak of a few of the recipes in this new book and I look forward to being able to see the rest when the full version is released.
I have purchased the Blue zones cookbooks. This new one is just as fabulous as the his other cookbooks. Great recipes. easy to make. Love the stories in his cookbooks. Great for somebody who wants a healthier lifestyle .
My husband has been vegan for the past two years and I adopted a plant-focused diet. I was very excited to review The Blue Zones American Kitchen by Dan Buettner. The book did not disappoint. The recipes are unique (the closest I've come to experiencing this recipes is at the National Museum of the American Indian restaurant in Washington D.C.), the photos are gorgeous and the stories are interesting. While some of the recipe ingredients may not be easily available, the cookbook is definitely worth having on your shelves.
The Blue Zones cookbook sampler seemed very useful and beautifully designed. I love National Geographic and am interested in a Mediterranean diet and way of life, so I had to check out this sampler. The recipes included not only look delicious but are also healthy. Buettner shares the history behind why they were each chosen to be included in this book. I will definitely check this out now that the full book has released! Thank you to Dan Buettner, National Geographic, and Netgalley for a free sampler in exchange for honest feedback.
Thank you to NetGalley and National Geographic for the opportunity to read a free digital sampler of this cookbook for an honest review. (Publish Date: December 6, 2022)
“The Blue Zones American Kitchen” by Dan Buettner immediately sparked my interest, because I have recently tried a couple of recipes from the Blue Zones website and really enjoyed them!
The sample cookbook I received reveals in the contents that the full version will contain 100 recipes ranging from Indigenous/Native/Early American, Asian American, Latin American, African American, and Regional/Contemporary American dishes. The theme for this cookbook is to introduce recipes derived from five places around the world where people consistently live to or past 100 years.
I loved the vibrant images that accompanied the recipes. All were plant-forward and looked delicious! I found the instructions easy to follow and there was a nice variety of recipes ranging from just a handful of ingredients to an entire basket full depending on your preference and time constraints.
Overall, I really enjoyed this sampler and am looking forward to getting the cookbook once it’s released!
I wasn't familiar with the Blue Zone concept before selecting this cookbook. It is a very interesting concept, however, it is difficult to review just based on eight pages. From what I did see, there are recipes where I would have to buy some ingredients because it is not something I keep in my kitchen and there were a few beautiful photos included in the sampler.
I am not going to rate this cookbook as I feel like I can't really do that with the sampler provided.
It is difficult to determine the quality of this book with 8 pages of a sampler. It looks to be interesting and the idea of 100 recipes to live to 100 is intriguing. I would like to have seen the whole book before giving my opinion
Thanks to the author, National Geographic and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't able to download this book, so unable to review it. It seems like a great book, but the Netgalley app doesn't work for me.
I wasn't familiar with the Blue Zones concept before I saw this book, but I'm very intrigued. I love the concept and I'm looking forward to seeing the full book. The few recipes that were included look really interesting, although they don't seem all that accessible in terms of ingredient availability. The pages were very aesthetically pleasing though; I love a cookbook that includes lots of pictures!
This sampler is not enough of a teaser for me to really be able to form an opinion on this book. I have heard about the blue zone diet and I am interested in learning about it and finding some recipes, so I wish there had been a little bit more of a preview.
I loved getting a small taste of this delicious looking cookbook and can't wait to read the full version!
The concept is intriguing. The recipes selected for the sampler didn’t pique my interest, but would definitely like to view the whole book when it comes out.
I got a sampler to review and it only comes with 5 recipes. I seems like a nice cookbook with recipes made with fresh vegetables and fruits. The photos are beautiful but the recipes available didn’t catch my attention, not enough to convince me to by it. The book itself is very pretty, easy to read and follow the recipes, and it has gorgeous photos. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review
Inspirational, informative and beautiful images on the lifestyles and diets of the world's longest living people - a book to read and continue to delve into the journey of well-being.
This book has very unique and healthy recipes. Many cooks may not be able to access the special ingredients that are used in these recipes. I was unfamiliar with a few ingredients (benne seeds, chlorophyll), but there are suggestions on where to purchase the odd ingredients, which is helpful.
This book looks like it will be enlightening and very interesting to read. The concept is lovely, but the recipes may be too elevated for some. Highlighting native plants is great for education, but some ingredients may be hard to find.
