Flora la Fresca and the Art of Friendship is a relatable middle grade book about making and losing friends. Flora and her best friend Clara are inseparable—until the unthinkable happens. Clara and her family move clear across the country from Rhode Island to California. While they are determined to fill every moment together to the max before Clara leaves and remain best friends once she departs, Flora doesn’t know how she’ll survive at school and deal with her older sister’s demands as she plans for her upcoming quinceanera. Flora struggles at first, especially when she learns that Clara is starting to make friends in her new home. When newcomer Zaidee arrives at her school, will Flora’s thinking about having only one best friend begin to change? This sweet and engaging illustrated book will appeal to middle grade readers with friendship issues of their own as well as those who are grappling with their relationships with older siblings.
