When Seb returns from a vacation in Australia with a new wife his family as well as his friends are kind of surprised! Most of all Seb's mother, Caroline's new mother-in-law does not seem to like her at all! But why??
And how many secrets can one family hide? Not only from the new family member but also from each other??
Shalini Boland really knows how to write twisted family stories with perfect endings!!
The story is narrated by Katie Villa. She is so nice to listen to!
Thanks #NetGalley #Bookouture Audio for providing me with this audiobook
I enjoyed the story and the complex characters, well developed and realistic. The plot twist was a big surprise, and also the twist at the very end of the book. The novel was well written, and the audio narrator was excellent, keeping my interest in the personalities and the story throughout.
Your new husband has a shocking secret. Would your mother-in-law kill to protect it?
From the moment I meet my new mother-in-law in her beautiful country house, she makes it clear I’m not welcome. Lilian Fletcher hates me for marrying her precious boy on a golden beach far away from her.
The mother-in-law from hell? Sign me up!
I went into this not having read the author before, but loving the premise. Both were a hit.
This was a fast read, with short, sharp chapters, I gobbled it up in a day. Seb, originally from England, flies ato Australia to met up with Caroline who he’s been online dating. After a whirlwind romance, they marry and move to Sebs hometown of Stalbridge to help run the family owned pub. Here, Caroline is met with a frosty reception from her new MIL and parents who seem way too involved in their son's life.
The twist and turns in this just kept coming. The author has an uncanny way of making you question the entire cast of characters, and their motives. I read a lot of thrillers so it takes a lot for me to audibly gasp, but this one got me and kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page. Incredibly clever, tension filled writing. I look forward to reading more from Ms Boland.
I listened to this on audio, narrated by Katie Villa. She did a wonderful job of narrating the different accents and creating a wonderful atmosphere.
A fast paced, addictive psychological thriller - highly recommended
Many thanks to @netgalley @bookouture audio and the author for this ALC

The best way I can describe this book is basic. It had a good description, but the book was average. Nothing was surprising. I didn't really care for the characters either. They were all yucky people. I do like this author though and will read her again. This one was just not a favorite of mine.
I really enjoyed this audio book. Liked the narrator and enjoyed all the usual twists I’ve come to expect by this author however this wasn’t my favourite.
I have to admit, I was expecting just a bit more from this one, but it was still a really good and quick read!
Thank you NetGalley for the audio copy in exchange for a honest review. Seb returns to the family run pub from Australia with a surprise new bride, Caroline. Seb’s family are shocked and his mother Lilian takes an instant dislike to Caroline. It soon becomes obvious that both Seb and Caroline have secrets in their past. A cleverly written gripping thriller.
Thank you for the opportunity to listen to an advanced copy of this audiobook. I enjoyed this latest book from Shalini Boland and felt it was better than some of her previous books. The story itself is multi perspective, told by the meddling mother in law Lilian, daughter in law Caroline and a third narrator Amy. As the story progresses it becomes clearer how Amy is involved in the narrative and some of the twists and turns along the way are shocking. Highly recommended.
I am a huge fan of Shalini Bolands books, so when I seen the daughter in law I knew that I had to request a copy and was delighted when I was approved.
I do love a good domestic thriller to do with family dynamics.
This one didn't disappoint, it was full of twists and turns.
An addictive read that I couldn't put down!
This one started off strong and I was intrigued by the different characters and elements. It’s told from the point of view of the Mother In Law and Daughter In Law. I’ve liked this authors precious books but this one just fell short. I couldn’t really connect with the characters and didn’t really care for any of them. I found it drawn out with not much flare when it came to the twists. It’s an ok listen with an ok plot but it was only ok.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to #TheDaughterInLaw
Thank you NetGalley and. Bookouture Audio for the audible “The Daughter-in-Law" in exchange for an honest revIew. The narrator did a fantastic job and brought the book to life!
The Daughter-in-law was gripping from the very start!!! It is a fast paced thriller that had me engaged from beginning to end! There are several twists along the way and that kept me on my toes.
Loved that this book was told through various POV's.
Seb and Caroline marry in Australia after a whirlwind courtship. The couple met online and got hitched after three weeks! They move back to the UK where Caroline is not welcomed with open arms from her new mother in law. His family owns a pub and they all live up above the pub in a small apartment. Lots of family time and not much space cause things to go downhill quick. The story is full of tension, mistrust, secrets, power struggles, and accusations!
4/5
Thank you Bookouture Audio for the advanced listening copy!
Australian Caroline has just taken a big chance. She's moved across the world to be with her new husband, Englishmen Seb, and his family. Caroline has no family of her own and a vague history, making the transition into living with Seb's family abrupt and difficult. This is made even more so by the fact that Seb's mom, Lilian, seems to hate Caroline, and Seb has huge secret: he has been married before. Suddenly Caroline feels like her marriage, and her life, may be in danger if she doesn't uncover the truth. The only question is, who will kill to protect this secret.
This story was a wild ride! Told from the perspectives of Caroline, Lilian and sometimes Seb's first wife, we're given just enough information to throw suspicion around every direction. This was a classic, comfortable and intriguing English thriller with plenty of unreliable people and family drama. While parts of the mystery were obvious to me, there were a few big twists that I was definitely not anticipating, keeping me on my toes during the whole story. I'm always pleased with Shalini Boland's writing!
Yikes…what kind of family did I marry into?!🤦🏻♀️
After a whirlwind vacation to Australia, Seb returns home to the UK with his new bride Caroline. After interacting online, he was all in. Seb knew that once they met he couldn’t return home without her.
But for Caroline not everyone is exactly on-board with accepting her as quickly as Seb. In fact, her new mother in law Lilian was down-right rude and rather hostile. And she isn’t the only one with big attitude. Looks like Caroline has married into a family of secrets, lies and hidden agendas.
Another fun thriller by Shalini Boland. Though I deduced most of the twist early on, it in no way took away from my enjoyment.
The interactions between Caroline and Lilian kept my anxiety level on high! I was shocked by what Caroline put up with! (Can’t say I would have been nearly as understanding and patient).
I listened to the audio and enjoyed the narrator as she brought out the deep animosity simmering between the characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio 🎧
Sebastian and Caroline meet online and marry in the throes of the moment in Australia after a whirlwind romance. On returning to Sebastian's family home in a local publican house not everyone is so thrilled about their union. Addionally, there are dark secrets that neither party has revealed to their new spouse. All under the same roof with Sebs parents, his brother working in the kitchen, things starts to come unravelled with deadly consequences. A superb audiobook with lots of great reveals throughout. #thedaughterinlaw #shaliniboland #netgalley
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture Audio and Shalini Boland for an audio ARC in return for an honest review.
'The Daughter-in-Law' by Shalini Boland.
Your husbands secrets and the mother-in-law from hell, what's not to love?
This had me gripped from the start, it is a perfect psychological thriller which has the reader instantly hooked.
It keeps you guessing the entire way throughout. There are plenty of twists and turns which hook you in further.
It is a great domestic thriller which I throughly enjoyed.
Narrated by Katie Villa who really bought this book to life.
Reading Between the Wines book review #94/135 for 2022:
Rating: 3 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book 🎧: The Daughter-in-Law
Author: Shalini Boland
Genre: General Fiction (Adult) | Mystery & Thrillers
Available now!
Sipping thoughts: I really like Boland, but this was not a favorite. I think the main character was so unlikable that the book was hard to like. I did like the final reveals and appreciated what the main character did to get what she wanted. I will continue to look forward to new releases and read them without needing to read the synopsis.
Cheers and thank you to @NetGalley and @BookoutureAudio for an advanced copy of @TheDaughterInLaw.

Seb has met the love of his life online. He flies around the world to marry her and bring her home to his family. He has not informed his beautiful new wife, who is so excited to start their life together about his family, specifically his mother, that he was married before, what happened to his first wife and sooooo much more. Lillian Fletcher is a devious scary horrible mother in law. All she wants is her son to herself and his new wife gone. Little does everyone know that the new wife has plenty of secrets of her own. Lots of gaslighting, too many “accidents” to just be accidents, lies and psychological torture all wrapped up in a well written, thriller that will keep you on the edge of your chair. Be warned as these are some truly messed up creepy devious people each will something to hide from the others. There an old saying that when you marry someone you marry their entire family. In this story it is more of an omen than anything else!
Shalini Boland never lets me down. This page-turner kept me guessing every step of the way. I kept wondering if the mother-in-law and bro-in-law were good or bad. There's a little of everything for the reader - murder, intrigue, suspense, and family dynamics. Now I have a question for Shalini Boland... when is your next book coming out?
WoW.......Now here was a roller coaster of an audiobook The Daughter-in-Law by Shalini Boland Narrated by: Katie Villa and Length: 7 hrs and 42 mins was an excellent book from start to finish with lots of twists and turns that were just brilliant. Shalini's books are always a 5 star read for me and this one was no different. She always has away of pulling new readers and old readers into her books and once you start to listen or read them you know its going to be a page turner and will have you gripped and you will find it very hard to put it down.
I highly recommend The daughter in Law especially as this one has an excellent last few chapters that will have you saying WoW at the them. Just Brilliant!!! Especially as the Secrets you try and bury always comes out in the end, and it doesn't matter how hard you try to hide them! they always come out some how. WoW!
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Daughter In Law' by Shalini Boland.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Shalini Boland, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 4th November 2022.
This is the eighth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'The Other Daughter', 'The Wife', 'The Couple Upstairs', 'One Of Us Is Lying','A Perfect Stranger', 'The Family Holiday' and 'My Little Girl', all of which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl and The Wife Between Us'. I am a huge fan of 'Gone Girl' and 'Girl On The Train' so am looking forward to seeing if it lives up to this! I am also a huge fan of Shalini and if this is half as good as 'The Other Daughter', 'The Wife', 'One Of Us Is Lying', 'A Perfect Stranger', 'The Family Holiday', 'The Couple Upstairs' and 'My Little Girl' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists a prologue, 52 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Dorset, England 🏴, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. The fact that this book is based in England is even better as I have been on holiday in England many times so may even recognise some places Shalini has set the book around. I have in fact literally just returned from a holiday in Dorset!
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective with the main protagonists being Caroline, Lillian, Amy and Michelle. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
WOW!! Where to even start?!? Firstly I must say yet again I was NOT disappointed by the very talented Shalini Boland!!! I started reading this book this morning and finished it in a few hours. Yet again being completely blind sighted by THAT ending!!
It is extremely well written as is every book I have read by Shalini with vivid descriptions that really put you in the storyline. The blurb and cover work perfectly with the storyline. Every single time I told myself I'd finish the chapter and then put it down and every single time I was left with a sort of cliff hanger refusing to allow me to put it down.
If your planning on reading this I would recommend clearing your schedule!!!
Absolutely gripping storyline which I got completely sucked into. A great unputdownable page turner filled with suspense, mistrust, revenge, tension, accusations deceit, mystery, love, power struggles, lies and absolutely everything you could want in an absolutely gripping family drama/psychological thriller!! . I loved the storyline, especially the shocking plots that I would never have seen coming! Not just one either!! There's nothing worse than when you have worked everything out and your not even half way through a book so a massive well done for that!! I definitely did not even have the person involved in my suspect list AT ALL, wasn't even close to working out what was going on, soooo many red herrings and as for the epilogue don't even get me started!!!! Absolutely mind blown!!! I absolutely love the fact that I know Shalini will never fail and that every time I read one of her books I can guarantee it is going to be an absolute page turner. If you have never read any books by this extremely talented author then you are definitely missing out!! An absolutely explosive rollercoaster ride with family drama and a mind blowing twist.
I haven't been that shocked in a book in a while so WELL DONE Shalini!! This book is will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I really could not compliment this book any more it is an absolutely gripping, addictive and shocking page turner.
I absolutely LOVED the locations and I really did feel like I was having a holiday in Dorset too, an absolutely gorgeous country and I was devastated when I came to the end and had to mentally unpack my bags even with all the action, suspense and mystery going on, or maybe especially because of all that!!
I read approximately half of this book on kindle and listened to approximately half on audio book. I must also give a huge congratulations to the narrator Katie Villa who not only brought the storyline to life by really portraying the emotions through his voice but by doing absolutely fantastic impressions of males and females so a HUGE congratulations Kate!! I cannot imagine that this was anywhere near an easy feat!!! I am looking forward to discovering more books read by yourself as you definitely have a perfect "book" voice!! I sometimes struggle to absorb the storyline through an audio book but if you are the same as me I can promise you will not have that problem with this amazing narrator!!
The characters were all well rounded and realistic with their own personality traits, strengths and weaknesses. It was very interesting watching how the bonds strengthened and weakened between characters throughout the storyline. I had mixed feelings for each of the characters throughout but one thing I love about the characters in all of Shalini's books is that she makes them jump out of the page and puts you right next to them throughout. Having so many different perspectives ensures you get to know each one and see what they are doing. I absolutely loved the last chapter, something I love with Shalini is that she always seems to dedicate the last chapter to a certain character in books and completely shocks you making you really want to see what happens next and several times I've been left hoping and wondering if that storyline will be carried on.
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read a chapter of Shalini's psychological thriller 'The Secret Mother' which sounds absolutely gripping and I'm looking forward to reading myself!!,
A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Shalini Boland for another absolutely fantastic success!! I cannot wait to read more of your amazing work!! I really would love to see your books on the big screen one day, I can guarantee they will be a success if they are even half as good as the books you write!!! Here is to your next huge "blockbuster"!!! 🥂
Overall a page turning, gripping, epic psychological thriller with an explosive ending that will blow your mind!!.
Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, Crime Fiction, Romance Novel and Psychological Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl and The Wife Between Us and of course Shalini Boland and just anyone looking for an epic read with a twist.
