Thank you NetGalley for the audio copy in exchange for a honest review. Grace comes home early from a works function. She finds her husband Dominic with another woman in his cabin den. She locks them in and walks away to form a plan. Dominic has high security on the cabin and they are unable to escape. As the story unfolds it becomes clear this is not the first time Grace has locked people in a shed. A great read.
This book is the epitome of the saying 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned'. And although Grace is clearly a disturbed person, you can't help empathising with her and feeling like some of her actions are completely understandable - and actually cheering her on at times!
The story is told from different perspectives and across different timelines, which keeps the tale interesting. There are a few twists towards the end which I wasn't expecting (although I rarely am unless they are completely obvious) and the pace is pretty fast, so you are left hanging on every word. Highly recommended.
I had the audio book, which is 6 hours 45 mins of great narration and excellent entertainment, and I thank NetGallery and Bookouture Audio for allowing me to get a copy.
How I love a Daniel Hurst novel/audio book and this did not disappoint me at all. I was lucky enough to get a copy of the audio book and devoured it straight away.
We meet Grace who returns home to find her husband having an affair, to say she is angry is a major understatement she is scorned and wants revenge. With adrenaline pumping and anger taking over she locks the door of where she has found them, which happens to be in her husbands cabin. They try their best to get out but Grace is keeping that door securely locked.
The novel is told through Grace and Dominic's point of view and I loved this audio book. It was thrilling and interesting and I have not read/listened to anything like this before. I enjoyed reading about Grace and her feelings of anger and she made for a good character.
If you love a read that is fast paced, thrilling and keeps you guessing then this is such a good read.
Thanks to Daniel Hurst, Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me a copy of this audio book - its great.
While the setting (a cabin that can't be opened from the inside without a key) is almost comically unrealistic, the writing and narration make this one a compulsive read. Good characters, good plot twists, four stars for sure!
One of the best audiobooks I have had the pleasure to listen to. I absolutely loved both of the narrators and the story was very creative and addicting! I thank Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review this audiobook.
A lot of twist and turns and a super fast pace.. I did not want this one to end. I would have never guessed the plotline or ending. Kept me on my toes and guessing the entire time. The ending left me wanting more.
Enjoyed this audio book but can't say I would call it a thriller .
Lots of twists and turns and to start off when Grace first reacted to catching her unfaithful husband I thought " Good for her" and found it funny but soon got bored with that
However going back to Grace's childhood and the consequences of what happened then brought in some good twists but not enough to have me on the edge of my seat I'm afraid
This story was not quite what I was expecting.. The characters are all unlikable which made for a very engaging twisty and somewhat dark read. Jumping between perspectives and learning more about the characters through flashbacks helped the story build at an excellent pace. I love when you know a twist is coming but it surprises you anyway and this book had that for me. I will say that the very end was a bit cliché but I really enjoyed this story overall. Well done.
I might be the odd one out on this.
I felt it was rushed with not enough details. On the other hand there were some parts that were very well written that were gripping. I finished it to see if I was right:
I didn’t care for the narrators I felt like their dynamic didn’t flow well.
This story is not what you'd expect when you read the summary. Yes, a wife catches her husband in an affair, locks him and his paramour in the cabin behind their home, without clothes or food or heat. Then she tries to figure out what to do with them. But, underneath this story are several more layers that unfold as you listen to the book. You'll be surprised that things are not as they seem. While I thought the characters were not all that exciting, the plot held my interest. Worth checking out.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for sending this audiobook for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
I think this is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to. I particularly liked the way different narrators were used for the main characters Grace and Dominic. It can be quite irritating listening to people trying to do voices of different sex.
The storyline was very well constructed and was great to listen to. Yes I guessed most of the plot but that didn’t matter. Grace was very well written. I almost felt sorry for her. Dominic just got flattered and carried away. But came across as decent. The flipping backwards and forwards to Grace as an adult and a 10 year old little girl was very good and added to the story. There were elements of surprise and a story that could have been unbelievable but the skill of the author meant each part was covered in a way that felt believable
A great listen.

I really enjoyed this book, and enjoyed listening to it as it was read by two people to take on the male and female characters in the book. It is split into Grace chapters and Dominic chapters, each telling the story from their perspective.
Dominic has convinced Grace to let him build a cabin in the garden to work in, as he is now working from home more than the office, once she has agreed he goes all out making the most secure cabin he can.
One evening after a night out with work, Grace comes home unexpectedly and finds her husband and his mistress having sex in the cabin, so she locks them in. They have no clothes, food or water. How will they escape? will Grace let them out?
Nothing is what it seems..
The twist and turns really kept me engaged and I would recommend this book.
Grace leaves a networking event early - rather than using her reserved hotel room, she returns home. To find her husband inside another woman. Seething with anger, Grace locks the couple in the cabin, at the edge of their property.
Dominic and Camilla fight against panic - and each other, as reality sets in. Dominic had the cabin created as a secure workspace - they can't get out.
While Grace ponders her next move, the reader is granted insight - into Grace's childhood as well as her marriage.
Intriguing, well written domestic thriller.
The narration made me obsessed - well done, loved dual voices for the dual narrators.
3.5/5
Thank you Bookouture audio for the advanced listening copy!
Grace and Dominic are happily married, so Grace is utterly shocked to come home and find Dominic in his cabin with another woman. When Grace agreed to have the shed built, it was for Dominic to have a sort of "man cave" and WFH space, NOT so he could have sex with other women. Grace does the only thing she can think of: closes the door and locks it from the outside. While Dominic and his mistress try desperately to get out, Grace tries to figure out a way to not repeat the past. This situation isn't entirely new to her, leading to the question: is this revenge or just bad luck?
What an interesting premise! This story was told alternating between Grace and Dominic's points of view, leaving the reader missing key information until just the right moment. Grace's past was a total surprise to me, as was the ending of this book! For most of it, I couldn't where the story was going, nor could I decide where I wanted it to go. Morally gray characters can be hard to root for, but in this one, everyone is morally gray. It'll be hard to determine who you want to "win" this couple's argument, but, let me tell you, you won't be disappointed by the end.
Daniel Hurst writes fun popcorn thrillers (by the way, that is NOT a criticism, I love popcorn). Fast-paced, with the trademark twists we have come to expect with this author, I thoroughly enjoyed this listen.
Well-developed characters and an author who knows how to write a taut thriller without adding bloat to the page count, makes him one of my-go authors.
OMG.
So when I read The Intruder by Daniel Hurst, I declared that my new favourite of his books. Until I listened to The Couple in the Cabin.
This was utterly superb.
A good audiobook to me keeps the listeners clinging on to every word, has a great narrator(s) with a plot that keeps you interested and listening at every opportunity.
Audiobooks like this are hard to come by. This one does all of those things and more. The kind that had I not been working I would have listened in one sitting.
The plot is just nonstop, so thrilling and so full of twists I couldn't foresee the ending.
The characters are amazing, so well thought out the narrators did a wonderful job of bringing them to life.
Highly recommended.
The narration of this book was good - well paced, clear and interesting: I did want to listen to the end. However, for me, the story did not hit its mark. Very quickly Grace becomes and unlikable character but I was invested in how her story ended. I thought the back story of her childhood was a little implausible and as the story relies on this, it left me a little disappointed.
Some nice twists and clever plotting; this was an easy listen, but was somewhat predictable and not compelling enough for me.
Every book that I have read by Daniel Hurst is better than the last. He'd definitely become an author who's new book I'll definitely pick up. The Couple in the Cabin had me gripped and nearly a bit anxious whilst listening to it. I was fascinated as to how somebody could act in this way. As with any of his previous books, the plot flowed brilliantly and there was a twist that I didn't see coming. My favourite book of Daniel's so far.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this advanced audiobook. This is my first book by Daniel Hurst and it didn’t disappoint! So many twists and turns, I did not predict the ending!
