In this Egyptian mythology inspired story, Onia is the daughter of Maat and heir to the Hall and destined to be the next judge of souls. When her mother is murdered, Ra, her guardian, comes to bring her from her humble dwellings so she can take her rightful place in the cycle of rebirth and damnation. However, there are people (and gods) looking to thwart her ascension at every turn, and the growing sexual tension between Ra and Onia doesn’t help matters either. Overall, I thought this was really a really fun debut novel. I do think it suffered a little from issues with pacing and the villain was a little obvious (especially if you read a lot of Greek mythology inspired books), but in the end we get what we were promised: a fantasy/mythology romance book starring fabulous characters
This is an enjoyable, fast-paced, unique fantasy romance! As someone who loves the gods and goddesses of Egypt this was a gorgeous world to delve into. Moreau has done a great job in building out the complexity of the Halls.
This is a murder mystery meets 'coming of age' and it did keep me guessing!
Both the FMC and MMC are powerful and strong willed. Their banter and chemistry was top notch!
I would have liked a little more character depth across the cast, as sometimes they came across a little flat.
All in all I'm excited to read the next installment!
I found Ra and Onia both insufferable, unlikable characters. The concept of Jan was unique and I loved the exploration of Egyptian mythology but the world-building was poor and the relationship between the two main characters was primarily physical in nature so I didn’t feel the emotional connection. Even after finishing the book, I felt no strong emotions about it.
I appreciate the opportunity to review this but unfortunately this one is a DNF for me. I was super intrigued by the premise but I made it to about the halfway mark and felt like not a lot happened and wasn't gripping me enough to continue.
The Fall of Souls is an enchanting take on Egyptian mythology, with great lore and world building. I found the pacing to pleasant, and the characters to be distinct people with their own interests and motives.
I would say though that I was not a huge fan of the incredibly short chapters and the back-and-forth between POVs, as I almost felt like I just read someone's summary of the book rather than reading the book itself. Would have been nice to just slow down and savor the world itself. All-in-all, I still think it's a pretty solid debut!
This story is very interesting and the author pulls you in right from the beginning! It is very fast paced, which I really enjoyed.
Ra and Onia are really likable MCs, who have a slow burn type romance. Their playful banter was great! This is my first Nubian mythology read, and it's super intriguing.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a strong debut from R. A. Moreau! From the very first chapters, I was hooked and invested in Onia and Ra's story. The dialogue and banter were great and I loved that there were so many satisfying moments between the two while still being a slow burn (my favorite type of romance). Nubian mythology is completely new to me and I loved learning as the story unfolded. I also really liked that native vocabulary and language were incorporated seamlessly. Not only did I love the MCs and story, but I felt like I learned a lot as I read.
There were a few plot lines I was hoping could be expanded upon (the letters from Onia's mother, the markings and how those relate to kan, and Onia's initial struggle as she leaves the human realm and settles into the divine). I'm excited to see where this story goes, learn more about characters like Ammit, and to get more Onia/Ra in my life.
As an avid Fantasy Romance reader, I was looking forward to this story and it did not disappoint! I can't wait to recommend it to my fellow readers.

This was a very fun take on the Egyptian gods/goddesses. I have prior knowledge of the Egyptian religion from Art History and a wonderful history teacher in high school, so I knew enough about the different gods and goddesses that I never felt lost. I don’t know if that could be said for others- I do think you wouldn’t need to know them all to enjoy this book though. This book is a murder mystery, with love, and self discovery. I loved the sting FMC and though I wish we got a bit more building of friendships, the story was really great. I really enjoyed this and thought it was a really fun take on Ra, Ma’at, Anubis, and the others in a fantasy type setting. The timeline moved at a good pace, and the world building was really effortless. I will for sure be purchasing this when it comes out!
4.5*

What a ride! I don't even know where to start. First let me say that I have been trying to be a little bit more strict with my ratings. According to my Goodreads stats, I tend to rate books higher than the average bear ( I think my average rating is over 4/5) but that is generally because I research books before I read them and usually only pick up books that will interest me and look like I will enjoy them. But I have decided that maybe I need to be more strict with the books I review....
....And then I read this book. There was literally no way I could make myself like it any less and rate it anything other than a rounded 5 star. This book was magic. So beautifully written with such an interesting world. The reader is thrust into the world of Nubian mythology ( a refreshing break from the Greco-Roman mythology that dominates my book shelves) and into the lives of the gods and all their machinations. Another reviewer said this was an adaptation on Greek mythology, but to set the record straight- this is not. Nubian mythology is it's own thing and has basically nothing to do with the Greek gods because the Nubians have a different idea of souls and spirits and the rolls that the gods play. Nubian mythology can only be compared to Egyptian Mythology. But I digress.
In this book, we follow Ra and Onia on their way to the Hall of the gods. I won't give you a plot summary because you can read that in the description. I will say that these characters are strong and fierce and very well written. Their chemistry is off the charts and lots of spice in this book to get any reader a little melty. In fact, all the characters that R.A. Moreau as included in this book are so well done. They have so many layers and facets- it's hard to know what motivates them- so it is hard to really trust anyone (the whole point!). The plot was solid with enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested and unsure of where the danger will come from next. The world building and scenery in this book were also thoroughly detailed and it was very easy to get lost in the complex world Moreau has built.
Where did this book lose the 0.5*? These might be petty points and overall, the book was great and you should still read it but there were a lot of characters to keep track of in this book and a lot of terminology that would be new to a lot of readers. I would have found it to be helpful to have some sort of reference in the back or front of who all the gods are with their houses and details, and also some definitions of some of the Nubian terms/creatures that show up in the book. Also, I wish that Onia was slightly more damaged. She seems a little too polished and perfect. Too beautiful, too smart and too fierce and that makes her a little less believable. Sure, she has a struggle in the last few chapters but it's nothing that truly shows character development.
Overall, this book has so so many great things going for it. If you enjoy any book about mythology, fantastic world building, the political and dangerous world of the gods and a spice romance- this is the book for you. It is a book that is different than everything I have read lately but so absorbing, I could barely put it down. Lastly, if I could get my wish, I would LOVE to listen to this book on an audiobook ( so fingers crossed, they make one). The dual POV and absorbing world would lend itself well to an audiobook.
**Thank you so much to Netgalley for the free ARC of this book that I thoroughly enjoyed. The review I have provided is all my own honest opinion**
The Fall of Souls was a bingeworthy book I didn't know I needed until I picked it up. Right from the start I was hooked in and falling into the world Moreau created throughout the entirety of the book. This was a book that is truly different than anything I've ever picked up.
The two main characters are so easily loveable and their origin story of growing up together was so beautifully written you can't help but fall in love with them. The dynamics, the plot twists, things I didn't see coming, and things I hoped weren't going to come true did and I was enchanted by how well the author tied everything together by the end of the book.
This is definitely a book to watch out for because it's unlike anything I've read before, and I absolutely LOVED it!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Dual POV books are not something I typically am drawn to. HOWEVER! I truly enjoyed this story. I just could not put it down. The two main characters, Onia and Ra truly felt like real people to me. I cannot remember the last time I read a book so quickly.
A beautiful rendition of Greek mythology with black main characters.
A beautifully done Black Fantasy Romance.. the slow burn romance was delicious!
Overall a great book, especially for readers looking to diversify their bookshelf!
- I love the representation in this book! The characters descriptions are beautiful, aren’t focused on just one characteristic, and smoothly includes details throughout that helped me continuously picture the characters.
- Onia is a strong female character! I love how fierce and clever she is.
- Ra is also strong and stubborn!
- Those plot twists tho!!!! The plot was very fast paced, although the characters love was slow burn. I loved the dynamic!
- Although the characters have very proper language during spicy scenes, I felt it added to the overall feel of the divine vibe.
Well, this is definitely a book I would recommend to everyone. It is very enticing and straight to the point. I could not put it down.
This book is binge worthy. I opened this book last night at around 5pm and finished it early the next morning. This is unlike anything I’ve read before and the wanting to understand this world had me flipping the pages so fast. When the book ended I was thinking to myself, “Wait??? No, I want more.” I I fell in love with the two main characters Onia and Ra. They felt so real and likeable and they grew together throughout the story. I like how this story is different from all other books of this kind. It follows Nubian gods which I had never read about. It had me searching up what certain things were so I could really picture the character in my head. I am SOOO excited to read the next one in this series and any other book by this author.
