Fun and only slightly spooky graphic novel that will sure to be a hit with readers. Great option for younger elementary aged kiddos.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book, as this book has already been published, I will not share my review on Netgalley at this time.
This was requested when I first found out about NetGalley and I had requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before they were archived. I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it! I am giving this book three stars, as I don't want to give it a good or bad rating, since I did not get to it and we have to leave a star rating.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I had a great time with this book. It's sweet and simple. The artstyle is quite fun and easy to follow.
The story has a very DnD atmosphere. It's simply fun.
It's charming, with a few cool twists to the genre and a few cool ideas that keep the story fresh, while also feeling very much inspired by the fantasy genre.
This was super cute! I really enjoyed the exploits of Sully and his gardening crew. I thought that the characters were fun and I liked the art style. It reminds me of cartoons that I watched as a kid which really tapped in to that nostalgia factor. I think this is a great adventure that anyone would like to read.
SKULL CAT AND THE CURIOUS CASTLE – by Norman Shurtliff – Graphic Novel
‘Middle-grade readers who love fantasy and spooky adventure will treasure Norman Shurtliff's debut graphic novel like a magical gem.’
Scully the Cat is a huge fan of Cathero Comic Books, so when Scully starts his new job as a gardener at a creepy castle, and everyone goes missing, will Scully become the hero against bloodthirsty-vampires, a dark sorcerer, a slingshot-wielding-comic-reading goblin, and a spooky ghost?!?
Dun Dun Duuuun!
Nope—No Spoilers! You will have to read the book and find out. *winks*
I hope to read more adventures of Skull Cat and Cathero because it was an informative-fun story, has excellent graphics, and … well, Cats!
Nuff said.
Thank you, NetGalley and Top Shelf Publications (IDW Publishing), for providing me with an eBook of SKULL CAT AND THE CURIOUS CASTLE at the request of an honest review.

*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Pretty cute comic, i liked the artwork, not going to lie a little too little kid for me but i would totally buy this for a kid!
Skull Cat was such a cute graphic novel! I loved the story and the illustrations were great.
Skull Cat has recently gotten a job as a gardener at the spooky castle in town after his dad is injured on as adventure. Everyone says that the castle is haunted and that the owners are vampires. He tries not to listen to the rumors as he goes to work. But are they true? He will soon find out!
I really liked this graphic novel! It is set up well for a series, so I hope we get more soon!

“Don’t be a hero!”
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Skull Cat is a graphic novel that follows Scully the Cat’s spooky adventures in Le Dark Chateau.
It’s a charming story with an adorable main character and a quirky art style. Scully is the star here. Meek but brave, awkward but compassionate. And it was nice following his arc about stepping into the shoes of a hero, tearing away the darkness with friendship and a pure heart.
Of course, it’s nothing we haven’t heard of before. I don’t mind predictability because the fun in the story is the “how” and not only the “what”.
On top of that, there were some scene transitions that could have been less jarring. I had to flip the pages back at times to fully understand the flow of the scenes. Maybe even having some textboxes saying “Back in the tavern…” would have been helpful.
Thank you, NetGalley and IDW Publishing for granting me this ARC.
Skull Cat is a super cute adventure story with many funny scenes that made me laugh out loud. I loved the humor Ghost and Goblin brought to the story. Overall the feeling of the story is a little predictable, but it’s told in a fun way. So it did not bother me so much.
The drawings are fun and especially Skull Cat is so cute! His character is so lovely and innocent. He seems like a little child in a way.
I think that especially children will love this story. As an adult, I had a fun time with it and it was worth the read. I don’t love it or do not plan to continue with the series. But maybe I will think differently in the future…
3.5 stars
This was just okay for me. The illustrations were really cute. Loved the cat. Thought the concept was cool. But it kind of fell flat somewhere. I'm not sure if I can even say where. Maybe it was just missing something. I would still tell others to read it!
Really great artwork and quite toyetic! I think this would make a great animated TV show as well. I found it pretty thin and haphazard, but middle school students would definitely enjoy the adventure qualities and the fact that it is a nice, brief read.

Thanks to NetGalley for the copy.
It's Scully the Cat's first day of hers as the new garden-keeper at a spooky castle... but when everyone goes missing, is he brave enough to become a hero?
This novel was very funny, entertaining and quite enjoyable; although I don't feel that more for me (I'm not the target, nevermine).
Our protagonist is a little too innocent and even childish, but that is the perception of this embittered person, and sometimes I despaired, but taking into account that, it is a good story to teach certain values to the little ones.
The art was pretty and cute and very adorable.
I recommend the story for those who are directed, they are going to enjoy this adventure story very well, they are going to laugh and there will even be some who are a little scared.
Pretty simple concept, but wonky execution. I wasn't the biggest fan of the art style, but that's okay. Pacing and logic of plot didn't feel like it made much sense. Main character just jumps from one conclusion to another.
I was confused about what exactly the world creation was, why do some animals talk and have jobs, while others don't? Several mentions of stories and legends of mythical creatures but the only one we're introduced do doesn't do what.. you'd like they'd do?
Plus the ghost, seemed random and ultimately unexplained which bothers me. Sometimes they had legs, others times not. There were a few moments were their presence was incredibly creepy and quite overly possessive.
All in the all, I sadly wasn't a fan of this.

'DON'T BE A HERO!'
This is a comic about Scully and his adventures in a castle. The graphics are just marvelous and I was so immersed in the talent. I read this as a bedtime to my little siblings with voice acting, and we all fell in love with this comic.
There was a comic vault in the comic and I desperately want one too.
I would totally get this for my future kids, it's just so interesting and it withholds many life lessons. I can’t wait for the sequels.
Comments on the characters:
- Scully being scared is so adorable.
- The little ghost is funny and an amazing addition to the story especially his facial features when he said 'you better run before it's too late', I have a screenshot of his face and it always makes me laugh.
' I HAVE A SECRET WEAPON FAR MORE POWERFUL THAN EITHER OF US!'
'HA! AND WHAT WOULD THAT BE?'
'FRIENDS!'
The art was adorable. It was a fun adventure story I think my students would also enjoy it. It isn't too scary to frighten the little ones, but scary enough to engage your upper elementary students. I will be adding it to my personal and classroom library.
4 stars
Fun graphic novel with great illustrations and an eventful adventure. Adorable cat protagonist on a quest after he receives a job at a haunted castle. Great fantasy read for new readers in the genre or someone looking for a quick read. Thank you to Netgalley for for allowing me to read for an honest review.
Very cute read and appropriate for a very young reader who likes fantasy adventures. The villains aren’t too villainous, the scares aren’t too scary etc. The young cat hero is also basically a decent kid who’s taken a job gardening to help his family when his father is hurt.
This was a cute, fast read! The art style feels both fresh and classic, which I feel a lot of kids will enjoy! It'll be fun to find out the next adventure this little gardener will have.
Thanks NetGalley and IDW Publishing for this cute arc!
I loved it!! The art, the story and everything else in between was so super cool. Look forward to reading the others!!
