"The family we choose moulds who we are."
The second book of The Cosmoknights series continues straight from the first, following the Cosmoknight crew with their new additions. Pan has finally been able to escape her own planet and be on a spaceship travelling the world, but will it all be as wonderful as she thought?
With a terrifying message from her friend who she helped escape five years ago, and now a Pirate crew on their backs, how much can Pan and her friends take before it is too much?
If you're looking for a fantastic story on queer gladiators fighting against the patriarchy, some absolutely badass characters and, a story you'll want to read till the end (and be anticipating the next book!) then look no further!!
Templer absolutely took my full force with her first book and I was extremely excited and grateful to receive an eArc of the second book in exchange for my honest review. Seeing how much the story has advanced has only made me love it more, and all of the characters that come with it!
From beautiful art to heartbreaking and diverse stories, this is a book you should definitely pick up!
I adore this series. It has everything I love: gorgeous artwork, space adventures, sword fights, moral quandaries, identity porn, found family, revolution!
And SO MANY KICKASS LADIES! Queer ladies, trans ladies, ladies of color, fat ladies, butch ladies, disabled ladies, royal ladies, knight ladies, pirate ladies...
In short: Be Gay, Do Crime!
TW: violence, abduction and captivity
Hannah Templer does it again! Cosmoknights Book Two is even better than the first! The first story involved a lot of world building, but the second book starts right off with action! Hand this to fans of space adventures and stories about female heroines! This is a must for all YA collections!
A really fun addition to the world they set up in the first volume! The narrative in the first volume had a very cut-and-dry stance on the mission of the main group and the ways they were contributing to the greater good, and this second volume expanded on that to show how complicated that morality gets with different perspectives, and the ways that individual fears and traumas impact those perspectives. I'll be very curious and excited to see the ways the world is expanded further from here.
**I was provided an electronic ARC from the publisher through NetGalley.**
Hannah Templer returns with Cosmoknights Book Two. Everything that made book one the joyous space romp that it was is back with even more developments in our story. Readers follow Pan as she trains to be a Cosmoknight alongside a ragtag crew of queer folk who rescue princesses and fight the institutions of their neo-medieval world.
Book two dumps readers right back into the mix, so I would recommend that readers do a quick re-read of book one if they hadn't read it since its release in 2019. There is no "story so far" type recap, and I had to dredge the memory banks to get back into the story without the re-read.
Book two builds on the foundation set in book one, and really seeks to iron out a clear direction for the plot in future installments. The action was there. The character development was there All the super neat color palettes and beautiful art that I loved from book one was there. Casual queerness and representation of various body types and cultural backgrounds. All there. Cosmoknights is space pirates and space knights and rebels with a cause.
Ultimately, I really enjoy reading Cosmoknights and will absolutely look forward to the next volume.
Thank you IDW Publishing, Top Shelf Productions, and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. This is a great, fast paced, and enjoyable read with nonstop action and nicely written characters. Curious to see what happens next.
A brilliant continuation of the Cosmoknights tale, book two delves into Pan's past and the morals of saving/kidnapping Princesses. As ever, the artwork is stunning, the colour palette is *chef's kiss* and I adore everything Hannah has done with this story.
Join Pan, Bee, Cass, and Kate on the next thrilling part of their adventure. The stakes are higher as pirates enter the adventure, along with battling tyranny, royals, and their own selves. Will the crew bring themselves together in a fight toward a better world or will they be crushed underneath giant robot fists in the process?
WOWZA. This was EVERYTHING. The 'gays in space' comic has done it again! Bringing back all of the crew from the first volume and adding new colorful characters, Hannah Templar wove together a cast of the ages in an adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat.
There weren't as many robot fights in the books, but there was plenty of space swash buckling and space ship fighting to make up for it. The long awaited reunion between Pan and Tara FINALLY HAPPENS AND ITS GOT SWORDS.
10/10 could not recommend more
So here we have the second volume of the fantastic comic Cosmoknights! In this stallment Cass, Bee, Kate and Pan run away with the princess they rescued. En route to their next destination they have to deal with a princess who didn't want to be rescued and Cass and Bee's mission is put into question by the differing perspectives of Kate and the princess.
This doesn't stop them to participate in the next big event and get it even more trouble! If the first volume had action, this one is even more action packed, with its characteristic gorgerous spaceships and futuristic enviroment! I really like how both the ambient and the characters' attire stands out thorough the book. Seeing so many female characters and their diverse design feels so refreshing though i would have liked one o two more butch characters like Cass.
Although i enjoyed the book, there's some plotpoints that left me wondering about things here and there regarding the worldbuilding and how come Cass and Bee spent many many years doing what they did with no trouble whatsoever. I guess some things will be explained in the 3rd volume. The characters are well developed and adore them so (specially Kate uwu) so color me hooked to this series!
Pan has finally escaped her planet and is now on the run with two rebels, Bee and Cass, and the mysterious Kate. They've also rescued a princess, who might has her own idea of what her freedom should look like. And Pan still wonders what happened to her childhood friend Tara, who was a princess that escaped their own planet. But as the crew is headed to a new mission, will the stress of the rebellion tear them apart? Or bring them together against the empire?
I read the first volume of Cosmoknights about a year ago and fell in love. It's a queers in space adventure with fantastic art and gorgeous colors. The way that Templer expands the world in this book is fantastic, but it also doesn't overshadow the strong characters she created. We get to see how the rebellion is pulling at the seams of their group, but also that their idea of rebellion doesn't necessarily line up with other people's. There are a lot of interesting character dynamics throughout this volume, and I expect these will just be expanded upon in further volumes (because there better be more with that ending!).
One of the things I appreciated most about this volume was getting the perspective of the princess that they rescued. They thought they were helping her, but they found that she had different ideas about that. It's these conversations that allow them to think about how they are going their revolution, and it also adds character devleopment to the characters we met in the first volume.
All in all, I just really love this series and it's one that I definitely think that I'll need to add to my own shelf eventually!
The artwork was absolutely delightful, and I wish that I had read a physical copy of the book rather than an ebook on my tiny phone screen! The book's setting allows for such unique shapes and movements that, combined with the line work and colors, allow for a great visual story. The amazing tech gadgets, spaceships, and cosmoknight suits have such imagination. I also want all the hairstyles and outfits for myself, I love them.
The storyline is where things got a little fuzzy for me. It took me a bit to remember what happened in book one to really get into book two. I certainly didn't remember everything but I remembered enough to not stop me from getting immersed into the plot in book two. I loved the activism in this book and the character development that was happening. And I always love a pirate, space pirates definitely NOT excluded! Amazing.
I'm eagerly awaiting book three!
I was SO excited to see this second volume available on NetGalley because I thoroughly enjoyed the first one. And this one didn’t disappoint! It takes societal questions to a larger, bigger picture scale, and asks the reader to examine their own preconceptions concerning big companies merging and becoming powerful monopolies. And while kicking ass as spaceship-flying lesbians!
I was really looking forward to the second instalment of Cosmoknights and it knocked it out of the park! The interpersonal relationships between the characters are really compelling. I love the mix of comedic and serious moments that move the story forward. The artwork continues to be amazing; the way that panels are laid out are truly eye catching and beautiful to behold. There's one particular two page spread that was really stunning - but everything is just lovely to take in. I'll be suggesting this one for our collection and I can confidently say it would be positive addition to any library collection.
When I first heard of cosmoknights I knew I’d love it as my fave 2 book tropes are ‘gays in space’ & found family - and since this is a mix of both it’s utter perfection! I love the first in the series so when I saw this I couldn’t wait to read it.
It’s hard to describe the plot without spoiling the first book but this is very much a follow on, the first had A LOT of world building & context to explain so this one meant we could explore the characters more & answer questions about their past that we had. It was such a fun & easy read I loved it!! It did end on a cliff hanger though so I’m assuming there’s a book 3 coming? I can’t find it advertised or hinted anywhere but I really hope so!
And finally, since it’s a graphic novel, the art style is also a big part of a review. And I must say I think it matched the vibe of the story really well! Every character was uniquely themselves with their own style & quirks, but it also had that subtle scifi feel to it which I loved.
So yeah, I can’t recommend this series enough!!
My favourite graphic novel of 2022 was Cosmoknights. I just couldn’t get over the gorgeous art, incredible world building, and phenomenal representation. Cosmoknights is 100% the best graphic novel I have ever read. I wasn’t worried about book 2 being a disappoint, because I trusted the author to continue delivering this sapphic serve. Thank you to the universe for providing me with an ARC. If I had to wait another minute I probably would have cried.
The drama! These characters are so fun and dramatic. Cass just cannot help herself, she has to pick the most dramatic option every single time, and we love her for it. Bee is the mother they all need, I loved getting to know her more in this book. Together they all form a wonderful found family. Chef’s kiss.
The questions I had after book one have now been answered! The twists and the turns were sensational. I now have even more questions and cannot wait to see how the gang move on from that incredible ending.
UGH! The beautiful blend of queerness AND normalisation. No graphic novel does it better. Send me to this version of space. NOW!
Kate sat on that throne - I will never forget that image. I am entirely obsessed with her. The chaos antihero of my dreams. I would love to see Kate enter her villain era in book three and completely destroy everything and everyone. Kate deserves to be empress of the entire universe. Crown her now.
Okay, wow. I thought going in that nothing could top the first book in the Cosmoknights series, but boy was I glad to be wrong! Book two has everything you can hope for: more space fights, ship chases, character development, and some of the questions from book one are answered! And, of course, 🚀gays in space🚀! This book was somehow even more sapphic, even more gay, than book one. Seriously. Everyone is queer, it's great.
The illustration was beautiful and I formed even stronger attachments to Pan, Cass, Bree, and Kate, along with some new characters... and returning characters? (No spoilers here, folks!) Honestly, if I could give this book more than five stars I would, because it's just that good.
I received a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am such a fan of Cosmoknights and Hannah Templer in general, and this second volume of Cosmoknights only cemented that further. I really don't have much to complain about with "queer mecha knight battles in space" as a general plot, but the execution is amazing as well. The art style captures everything from glorious space battles to minute details while feeling like a top tier 80s cartoon (this is a compliment). The writing is captivating and avoids tropes that would be easy with the genre. I like the evolution of a lot of the characters, and the author did a great job of making this really feel like a ensemble cast vs just Pan and the folks she tags along with.
I particularly enjoyed the flashbacks used in this episode to give more backstory to the friendship Pan and Tara had on their home planet. It was nice to see some of the complexity there even knowing how deep and important the relationship is.
I cannot wait to read this in paperback once it comes out!
I wasn't sure if the author would be able to top the first one, but I loved this one even more! The art is beautiful, like the first one, and the rest of the story is great as well. The story picks up where it left off, and they're trying to deal with the princess that they just rescued that didn't want to be rescued. Things start off really rocky, but everything ends up working out... until it doesn't. I can't wait to see what else this author has in store!
First, I love Cosmoknights. I came across Book One during a darker time in my life when I was struggling to read so as soon as I saw Book Two listed, I needed to request it. This read lived up to everything I wanted in a sequel.
Cosmoknights jumps right back into everything, which was a little challenging at first. Though ideally, you won't have to wait a few years to read more and can read these back-to-back. We are right back with Pan, Cass, Bee, Kate and we even get to quickly start learning more about Scottie who they recently rescued.
There is a lot less jousting action this round and a little more politics sprinkled throughout. This was actually refreshing because it brings up a lot of different ideas about monarchies and class. Complex ideas are woven throughout the plot as we rejoin our characters as they debate if they are doing the right thing. Scottie is upset about being 'rescued' because she never asked for this, she had a plan as a princess to make a different, but can someone in a position of power ever really understand the difference that needs to be made? The graphic novel raises a lot of great conversation topics for students.
It helps that the art is lovely, reminiscent of shows like She-Ra introducing a diverse cast of Sapphic women. We even get a lot of heartwarming/feelgood moments that might not seem like it at first as pirates show up on the scene. But it's easy to guess who is the captain of these pirates as one of the biggest questions of the first book is answered with the re-introduction to an important princess.
In short, it's great to have a fun romp in space with a lot of Sapphic characters who can discuss politics that don't revolve around them being queer.
Book two gives more insight into the Cosmoknights world and the backstories of some of the characters. This volume has more questions about what happens after saving the princesses and what if they didn’t want to be saved.
The art is vibrant and bold just as in the first book.
The continuation of having queer characters with a story outside of the usual more sad realistic fiction is incredible as we have continue with our queer characters adventuring through space and fighting the patriarchy.
I would recommend this series to folks who liked Galaxy: The Prettiest Star and Space Trash but are looking for more action
