With Calligraphy becoming more and more popular, this book is so helpful for beginners looking to learn how to create perfect letters. This book includes beautiful ideas of how to use calligraphy while having clear step by step guides to each letter. I really liked how clear the instructions were and think this would be a great guide to creating your own calligraphy.

I really enjoyed this book. It was full of great tips for more than just writing words, but also embellishments and layouts. It’s a great book for a beginner and gives fresh ideas to those with more experience. 5 stars!

Having been a keen amateur calligrapher in the past, this has inspired me to give it another try. The guidance on writing styles is clearly illustrated with small practice spaces. Along with a selection of lettering styles, it explains the importance of layout with examples and gives some simple projects to try such as a floral calligraphy bookmark. This was an encouraging book. The introduction mentions so many of the reasons I've told myself why I couldn't do it, that I had to check if I could in fact letter.
This was a very helpful book and very motivational. The author manage to make the step by step very easy to follow. My end results weren't that great, but practice makes perfect.

Modern Calligraphy is a comprehensive book that teaches us the basics - types of materials, writing styles,… - and has various step-by-step guides to help us.

Marisol teaches us how to write, and how to persevere. Calligraphy isn’t something you excel at on the first try, you need to practice and believe in yourself.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning or advancing in calligraphy.

From time to time, I do crafts like creating wooden signs & doing other designs with a wood burning pen. It's a cathartic and relaxing pastime I really enjoy, so I was curious about "Modern Calligraphy." I was interested in learning how to do my own lettering directly on the wood for those sorts of projects. I couldn't have picked a better book for a total beginner: I think this book was the perfect choice.

Highly recommended for people who are interested in learning how to do brush calligraphy.

I have always wanted to learn calligraphy but never seem to get around to it. I'd like to use it for holiday cards and/or letters I send throughout the year. This book gives a great introduction to calligraphy and advanced options as well. I look forward to trying this out soon.

This work is a helpful introduction to modern calligraphy and lettering. It includes the author’s favorite papers and brush pens; encouragement for if you’re not feeling like you’re creative enough or good enough to pursue lettering; and some little tips scattered throughout including some related to making time to practice even when you’re busy.

There was plenty of different information about the guidelines, angle of the pen, and slanted versus upright letters to help beginners learn some of the basics of lettering. There were many good examples of uppercase and lowercase letters, and details about finding your own lettering style. The book also goes into details of some of the most popular styles of lettering, such as bounce and whimsical styles and what makes up those styles. Also, information about setting up projects and a couple of example projects were included as well. The book was made up of good examples and visuals throughout with detailed instructions. There was also a list of prompts for you to come up with your own lettering projects at the very end, as well as some other stencils to practice.

Overall, I highly recommend this guide to modern calligraphy for beginners to lettering who don’t know where to start or might feel intimidated. This was a fantastic guide with lots of information and was set up well. My thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for allowing me to read and review this work.

I have been playing with lettering styles since grade school. I began with bubble letters and riffing on the Palmer Method. In seventh grade I received my first set of calligraphy pens, nibs and inks. As an adult I started scrapbooking when my daughter was born and I purchased lots of lettering books. Each book showed how to copy the lettering of author. Modern Calligraphy is different. Maricar Concepcion Ramos treats lettering like learning to paint.

In this book, Maricar shows you the basic rules and how to break them. She gives you some alphabets but encourages the readers to design their own after practicing. You are given the freedom to create and soar on your own with ink, markers, pencil or paint. This will be the only lettering book you need because you can then create your own calligraphy.

A great book for learning Calligraphy
Author, calligrapher, and artist Maricar Concepcion Ramos presents her book "Modern Calligraphy. Learn the beautiful art of brush lettering", published by Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry (Walter Foster Publishing). She treats topics such as "Setting the Right Mindset", "Tips for Fun & Efficient Practicing", "Finding Your Own Lettering Style", or "Turning Lettering into Artwork". The book comes in a great design and pictures. There are numerous examples how to use calligraphy as well as tips and exercises throughout the book. She explains the lettering terms and shows how letters are put together using multiple colors which is very helpful. Ramos also shows how to change letter styles (e.g., for the letters x, n, and r - on page 33) to simplify connections between these letters and the neighboring letters. The lettering projects at the end of the book are presented in a step-by-step approach. A list of tools and materials is included. I highly recommend the book beginning and advanced calligraphers. All in all a great book but it would have been nice if the practice sheets could be downloaded.

I'd place myself firmly in the beginner category for calligraphy and I found this to be a helpful guide, especially with the step by step guide on to make each letter. Breaking it down makes it so much less overwhelming to start practicing.

I have many lettering books and this book is the best lettering book I have ever seen. Beautiful step by step directions to transform your basic handwriting into a work of art to be used for a greeting card or framed piece for your home.
