I Am Still With You is such a powerful book; not only does it take us through the history of the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafra War, it also takes us through how Iduma deals and reckons with the loss in his family, and his becoming into the person he is now. To simplify it, this book is basically about Iduma going on a search for his father’s brother who never came home after leaving to fight in the Biafra War, and through that, trying to come to terms with the death of his parents- that is really the premise of the book. But Iduma, as I have mentioned earlier, does more than take us on this journey of finding his lost relative, he takes us on a journey of understanding the war really deeply, as well as learning about what made the war, and the people who made the war. Iduma travels from city to city, from village to village, taking us between countries as well- Nigeria and the U.S- but despite this constant switch in setting, the story progresses really nicely, and we are taken along every discovery Iduma makes, every realization he makes, and every conclusion he reaches.
