Rounded up from 3 1/2 stars. This is a book that has a lot of really interesting, great information but also is likely to really frustrate a lot of readers, especially those with chronic illness. I can't see how folks with chronic pain and illness would not come away with a little bit (at least) of bitterness, even though I do agree with pretty much everything the authors say.

It's a bit of a spiritual book even though it is firmly rooted in science. I think part of the reason for the odd feel of it is that it's written by a father-daughter team and he is a doctor and she is a "health entrepreneur and philosopher."

The authors write about all of the things that contribute to positive and negative health outcomes, from the ways bacteria can literally hijack our brains (fascinating stats there!) to the importance of green spaces (nature, even in our homes) to why hospitals are so damaging to how we are wired to adapt and heal. There's a big focus on staying healthy as opposed to treating disease, and how things like trusting our guts and surrounding ourselves with the right people and spaces can literally change our health.

The book ends abruptly halfway through, and the entire second half of the book is references. I appreciate references, but I wanted the book to continue with a better wrap up of how to assimilate all of their advice into healthy lifestyle changes. It almost felt as if they ran out of time and just did a quick recap and signed off. That said, the information is really, really interesting and I don't disagree with any of it.

I read a digital review copy of this book via NetGalley.
