I enjoyed this one, but not as much as I had hoped to. I found it a little slower than some other books in the same genre and the characters weren't great.
Thank you NetGalley, and S.D. Monaghan for letting me read “Toxic People” in exchange for an honest review!
The book title captured my interest in what the story holds. I tried, I really tried to give this book a chance by rereading it but I couldn't seem to be drawn in by the plot. I found myself having to reread my pages again and again.
*Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review*
A great thriller - I would recommend it!
The start of this book and draws you into the story. The story lacked dialogue. I felt that there was a lot of unnecessary filler in this book. It is easy to read
I am still trying to wrap my head around this one. Toxic People is the perfect title for this book. Each character had their own toxic personality and agenda throughout the entire book.
The book delves into the dynamics of a toxic family, as implied by the title. Unfortunately, it features unlikable characters and devolves into a prolonged series of negative remarks on various topics including women, abortions, money, and family. Despite an initial promise of engaging events, the story fails to deliver, leading to a lukewarm reception among readers, myself included. The anticipated big reveal falls short, resulting in a disappointing rating of two and a half stars.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review. I was instantly drawn into this story from the beginning. It started off fast paced, slowed down in the middle and then had a really tense ending. The story is primarily about toxic relationships and families and the impact of this negativity. Jenny and Shane are the main characters and their relationship is basically built on a lie and to add to this Jenny’s mother Vera is a complete narcissist and control freak. I really enjoyed delving into this drama and I would definitely recommend it. 4 stars.
I want to, thank NetGalley, Publishers, and the author for providing this e-ARC. Witch, I will be giving my honest and sincere review.
The book's plot evolves about "Toxic people's" toxic relationships and behaviours, maintaining a good appearance for others to see. It's multiple POVs, we go from the present to flashbacks of the past.
It was tough for me to like any of the characters, all of them have a secret that intertwines them with each other.
Subjects like money, abortion, Instagram socialites, lies etc.
I found this book difficult to get through. I was bored because it seemed like nothing was happening and it didn’t keep my attention. I couldn’t connect to any of the characters and I didn’t like the protagonist. Sadly not for me, but I’m sure it’ll find the readers that will enjoy it. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for a chance to read and review this book.

This was super boring. I couldn't keep going. Nothing was happening! I guess the title is appropriate, because all the characters are terrible. I was skimming until I was unable to keep going. Up until the point I read until, there was no character development whatsoever. I just did not care what happened or what Jenny's secret was!
The writing style also did not do it for me. The long stretches of boring dialogue and uneventful scenes made this really hard to read. Also what what with the objectifying of women? Yuck.
"Toxic People" by SD Monaghan takes readers on an intense and gripping journey through the complexities of human relationships. Monaghan weaves a tale that delves into the darker side of human nature, exploring the impact of toxic individuals on the lives of those around them. The narrative is skillfully crafted, keeping the reader hooked from the first page to the last. Monaghan's writing is sharp and evocative, painting vivid pictures of the characters and their tumultuous interactions. The author masterfully captures the toxic dynamics that can unfold in personal relationships, making the reader reflect on their own experiences and relationships.
I had hoped the reviews were wrong but sadly they weren't. I managed to finish this book but I'll be honest, I did struggle throughout. The characters weren't the most likable and the storyline wasn't all that exciting. Writing style was okay though. I would still be keen to try more by the author.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This one sounded better than it actually was. Wasn’t really one I enjoyed.
Erm… well, on the surface, and by the synopsis, the premise of this book is right up my street. But unfortunately it didn’t hit for me. I don’t know why exactly.
I mean, I didn’t like the characters, and I don’t know if that was the point of the story. There was some good tension, and I did want to know the secrets that they all kept from each other, and what the deal was with the stalking man.
But really I was just thinking 🙄, talk about making your own life hard just because you’re obsessed with money. The title of the book was apt, because Jenny’s Mum and sister - what dire dire people, to keep around you for so many years.
How was this only 275 pages? It felt like a 600 page book the way I felt it dragged. Looking back I can’t say the story wasn’t especially fast-paced. I read it on my Kindle, so I’m keen to see a physical book just check the page count on Goodreads is correct! Have I been gaslit here!?
I just didn’t really enjoy it and it didn’t hit for me. It wasn’t a bad book, I just didn’t have the bestest time. I wouldn’t say don’t read this, just don’t go and rush out to find it.
I wasn’t a very big fan of this book! It was the first book I ever read from this author and I think it’ll be my last. It just wasn’t for me.
With its carefully crafted plot and unexpected twists, this suspenseful narrative ensures you'll be engrossed in its mysteries until the final reveal.
This story sounded really interesting & I was excited to read it!! Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this story at all, I really struggled to keep reading it!
First, I would like to thank the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.
Unfortunately, this title was not for me. I had a hard time getting into the book or relating to the characters. I wasn't a huge fan of the pacing and found it to be a bit of a slow burn. I would like to check out some other works by the author, however.
Did not like this book….the supposed suspense wasn’t worth it,…didn’t care about any of the characters at all…the toxicity seemed dumb and nothing of value in this. I skimmed through so much of it..
Such a good premise, poorly executed. I found that I was dragging myself through the book, and I did enjoy the last quarter or so, but the other 75% was so slow
