Rainbow Fish and his friends go through a lot together, from learning to share and finding the courage to speak up instead of living in fear. Each of the books in this collection teaches an important life lesson within the colorful and imaginative context of a school of sparkly fish.
Overall, I really enjoyed these books. While a few of these life lessons could do with a bit of conversation to help kids understand that sharing isn't always the right thing to do and diving into a dark hole, while brave, doesn't always result in new friendships. However, I love that Rainbow Fish is so willing to learn and grow, and I think preschool kids will really enjoy this audio collection.
What I don't think we'll enjoy is the beginning and ending theme music. There are ten books in this collection, and each track begins and ends with a one-minute theme song. By the time I got to book 3, I was already annoyed with this, and by the 10th, I was really wishing that the theme music was on a different track so I could easily skip it without worrying I'd lose part of the story. I imagine listening to this collection in the car (a great place for audiobooks) and constantly being annoyed by this music as each song plays ten times every hour. It sounds torturous. I don't want to be too critical of the musician or lyricist, but neither impressed me.
Overall, the books are lovely, but I'd like to be able to skip the music.
Overall this compilation of The Rainbow Fish stories is excellent! My nearly 4 year old absolutely loves listening to the stories (my opinion of the narration was that it was just okay, it isn't as magical or whimsical as I would've expected). My daughter does not like the theme song, which unfortunately plays before every story - it is rather spooky sounding (I see a few others have mentioned this too!). I remember as a child reading The Rainbow Fish and thinking it was lovely, so this has encouraged me to get physical copies of the book :)
Thank you to NorthSouth Audio and NetGalley for the ALC of Tales of the Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister
Audiobook review.
If I was giving the story itself a review it would be 5 out of 5 stars. Rainbow Fish has always been a favorite of mine. Unfortunately the audiobook didn't deliver.
First off the opening song (one which is repeated) seems more fit in the start of a kids Halloween movie. It has an eerie feel which just didn't connect with the "feeling" of the story I know and love. Same for the other songs. They were catchy, but didn't fit the tone of the book. I think maybe they were going for an "echo" under the sea type theme but unfortunately it didn't quite work for me.
Next thing I am not sure I liked is the narration of the story. I think the tone and voices for the characters were off. Again it didn't give the whimsy and uplifting tone I associate with the rainbow fish.
The bubble sound effects were a nice touch.
I wouldn't recommend the audiobook to others but I would (as always) recommend the books themselves.
I was granted complimentary audio ARC access to Tales of the Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister through the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister was one of my favourite books as a child but somehow I didn't know that there were sequels. Tales of the Rainbow Fish is a collection of all of the Rainbow Fish stories read in sequence by Taylor Meskimen and listening to it delighted my inner child! I'll definitely be keeping this audiobook downloaded on my phone for my daughter and nephew to enjoy.
The first story, The Rainbow Fish, is the story of a beautiful little fish who had many shiny scales. When his friends were sad, he started sharing his shiny scales with them until everyone had a single shiny rainbow scale. It's a story about sharing wealth and kindness, about not being selfish, and how sharing makes everyone happy. The remainder of this audiobook follows Rainbow Fish and his now very loyal group of friends as they have other adventures. They continue to learn and re-learn the "be kind to others" lesson and other important life lessons.
The audio experience of Tales of the Rainbow Fish is a lot of fun! Not only is Taylor Meskimen's narration spot-on, but the music and sound effects are entertaining and enjoyable as well. I'm not sure that my 5-year-old would listen to the whole collection in one sitting, but it's definitely interesting enough to hold her attention for more than a single story at a time. I'll note that I'm normally a speed listener and play my audiobooks at 3-4x, but for this one I slowed it right down to 1x and enjoyed every second of it.
Love this audiobook! Tales of the Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is a firm favourite in our house. It is a modern classic. How can you top the beautiful book with the gorgeous glittering scales of the fish? Well, simply by bringing it to audio with wonderful ocean music and catchy songs! We were so excited to listen and it exceeded expectations. Beautifully narrated and sung, this makes perfect bedtime listening with the children. #talesoftherainbowfish #marcuspfister #netgalley
Such a classic book and this brings it to life. My kids were into for a few minutes but they are little and have short attention spans. I though it was nicely done.
As stated before, I had no idea that Rainbow Fish was a complete series. I thought it was just the one beloved book that I reread so many times as a kid. I love that this audiobook has sound effects and music. All the stories were cute and had amazing lessons for kids. I highly recommend it. The theme song is stuck in my head three days later.
This was a nice surprise for my kids. A book they know in our language and they could listen in english. The language they are learning. We loved the voices and the special effects so much. Really we reccomend to everyone
As a child I LOVED the Rainbow Fish book, so when I saw this was available as an audiobook I had to listen for nostalgia's sake. This did not disappoint one bit - it included the original story as well as nearly a dozen others that kids will just fall in love with. I loved that this was an audiobook so you can have your kids listen to it while you're busy. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and NorthSouth Audio for my copy of Tales of the Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister Narrated by Taylor Meskimen in exchange for an honest review. It published October 11, 2022.
What a fun way to bring these childhood classics to a wider audience! You cant go wrong with these stories, and these would be so fun on a car ride, or while drinking cocoa and coloring. This would be a great resource for any elementary classroom, too!
I listened to this with my kiddo and she really enjoyed it. The music added some atmosphere but did get dragged on just a touch. Kiddo recommends.
This is such a nice collection of audiobooks for children! It includes 10 rainbow fish stories with transitional songs before and after each story. They range in length and theme which are great for different occasions. These would be so nice for a teacher to use for student centers. Young learners could listen to the story and complete an activity independently without needed a grownup to facilitate the the center. These are also nice to use at home with children or on car rides. The rainbow fish is a classic tale and the extra stories all follow similar fun themes that children will love!
This was a fabulous audiobook. I think the narrator did a great job which truly brought the story to life. This was one of my fav books from my childhood and I can’t wait to share with my own children someday. Thank you NetGalley for the eALC in exchange for an honest review
Thank you to NorthSouth Audio for offering me this audio book via NetGalley. Tales of the Rainbow Fish includes ten different stories in the Rainbow Fish series. I enjoyed the narration by Taylor Meskimen and the background music as well. I think this audio book is best for those already familiar with the Rainbow Fish stories. I could easily envision the beautiful illustrations while I listened to the audio book. It would also be good to use as a read-a-long while looking at the books. I often use audio books for narration when sharing a stories in my school library. If you enjoy Rainbow Fish stories this would be a nice addition to your audio collection.
Thank you NorthSouth Audio and NetGalley for the advanced electronic audio review copy of this delightful Rainbow Fish compilation. I really enjoyed the audiobook version of the well-loved Rainbow Fish stories. Taylor Meskimen, the narrator, did an amazing job bringing stories to life. Can’t wait to share this lovely audiobook collection with all the children in my life.
