An ARC was provided by NetGalley for a fair and honest review
Ugh. No. Just no.
I got 22% in, so this is a DNF. And even making it that far was a miracle.
I honestly don’t even know how this storyline could be saved or “improved”.
I could not follow along or even comprehend the words I was trying to read. The pace was completely off, entirely new scenes don’t happen in the next sentence!! A bunch of characters were introduced without context or any reason to them. The character dialogue was hard to follow and was exactly how I wrote essays in my 7th grade English class.
The main guy, Alex(fairly certain that’s his name??) is inexperienced and everyone picks on him but he was with an “older woman” that nobody knows about, so? That’s the best we can do? Honestly sounds like child grooming, but I didn’t stick around to find out.
Eva on the other hand. Lord. Eclectic would be the word I think the author would love to describe her as. I would not. Let’s try really hard to make her eclectic. Give her nine fingers. Make her dislike her parents/siblings fame that she wears disguises - who cares?? I don’t think small town Texas does. I could not understand her personality- or why she tried so hard with her brother who was 20 years older? Her storyline/household was supposed to be a family of fame and her hating it, supermodel mom, dad/uncle in a band (I think, again hard to follow), brother in a band, but now injured with burns and spinal cord injury. Instead I pictured dysfunctional circus.
Thank you so much to Xpresso Book Tours and Tonya Preece for this eARC through netgalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
~ A bit about the book ~
Evas mother is a famous model and her brother is a famoes guitarist. Her whole life Eva has been staying anonymus, but now she tries to figure out what she wants to do with her life while staying with her brother. Thats when she meets Alex, they fall in love and suddnely Alex also has to keep Evas identity secret. But both Evas family and Alex has more secrets than she knows, and that is when things start getting complicated.
~ My review ~
This book had a lot of potential, the characters were well written and the plot twists were good. I could have loved the story if the writing was different. Some parts of the story that could have been exciting were presented and written in a way that made them boring. The fact that the book stretched over several months erased all the drama from different revelations. Some of the plot twists could have been intriguing, but instead they didn't matter for the story? Parts of the book was fun, especially the beginning, but the mid part was boring and the ending was too cliche for my taste.
This book is adorable and I love Alex and Eva. The book is a little bit jumbled, there's a lot of characters to keep track of but when it focuses on the two main characters it's good. I loved seeing them fall in love for the first time and genuinely trust each other. I would have preferred the book to get rid of some of the family stuff and focus more on her relationship with her brother and helping him stay sober.
This book was sweet. But I struggled to finish it. I could not get into it like I had hoped I'd be able to. I thought it was well written just not my type of book.
I really thought I'd like this one, but it ended up being a struggle to finish. It just felt bland. I finished it 5 minutes ago, and I can't remember anything. It was a book, but that was about it

I have never struggled to read a book as much as I did with this one.
It's as if I gave my 7th grade students the task of writing a narrative story and this is what one of them came up with.
So bad and cringey. The story line does not flow, the characters dialogue is straight out of a 7th graders mind.
This book would do well having a serious editor revamp the story. It has potential, but the way that it was edited and written do it no justice at all.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pacing was perfect and helped to build the characters. Every character, even the background characters, were very dynamic. They each had their own stories, pasts, passions, fears. Eva and Alex were both well rounded characters who had quite a bit of character growth throughout the book.
I do think the title could use a bit of work. The Whiskey being spilled on shoes was such a small part of the story. I would get it more if it was brought up again later. But it happened, then was not mentioned again.
Loved this book! It was sweet and I enjoyed the authors writing style. A beautiful love story with some angst,

Review: This was my first book by Tonya Preece and I have to say I really loved the quirkiness of the book , the whole time I could picture Alex and a rugged cowboy with a southern drawl and Eva being this down to earth doll of a person! You can truly picture them in your head as a movie plays out the chapters. I enjoyed the shortness of the chapters too I am the reader that would rather have the multiple short chapters than only a hand full of extremely long ones. This is an easy read that I think you could fall in love with it instantly.
Eva avoid the media and fans that follow her famous family by wearing disguises. She moves in with her famous guitar god brother Alex in Austin while he tries to stay sober. They fall in love but his ex-gf causes troubles...
I like both Eva and Alex a lot. They are both interesting characters and I love how they are together. They have so much chemistry.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
What an amazing story. I loved every single word. My heart was galloping, singing with joy and crying in pain. Whiskey on Our Shoes is an enthralling story worth your time.
