Megan Abbott's Beware the Woman is a thrilling and captivating novel that is sure to keep readers on their toes.
Overall, Beware the Woman is a fantastic read and a great example of the genre. It is a fast-paced and exciting novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended.
Thank you NetGalley, the author and PenguinGroupPutnam for extending me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I found this to be a slow-burn read. As the pages turn, you become more and more certain that Jacy and her unborn child are in grave danger, although the source of such danger is unclear - her husband, father-in-law, the creepy caretaker, a mountain lion, all of the above(?). Abbott did a really good job building tension and allowing the reader to feel Jacy's dread and claustrophobia. There is also a strong message about women's bodies, women's choices and the treatment of a woman as a mere vessel for her future offspring.
Overall, it wasn't my favorite of the author's books and the reveal at the ending felt a bit soap-opera-esque to me. I was, however, a unique and quick read.
This book was a slow burn, which I typically have a difficult time getting through. The twist was a pretty good payoff, but the characters' motivations were a bit odd. Wasn't my favorite of Abbott's work.
I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this book based solely on the description. I’m glad I didn’t let that deter me though because I thoroughly enjoyed Beware the Woman by Megan Abbott!
This was definitely a slower burn but never actually felt slow. The suspense was building the entire time and I found myself worrying right along with the characters.
There are certainly deeper themes at play here than just your average shotgun wedding and an overbearing in-law which I truly appreciated. I felt worried, enraged, disgusted, protective all at the same time.
This book is certainly appropriate for the many discussions we are having as a society now.
The only issue I truly had with this book was the ending. It went off the rails a little bit and then came to a screeching halt! I couldn’t believe when I tried to swipe to the next page that it was the end!
If you’re reading this Megan Abbott, please give us an epilogue!!!! I am very invested!
Thank you to Megan Abbott, NetGalley, and G.P. Putnam & Sons for allowing me to enjoy this ARC!

Beautifully written. Loved the twist.
Honey, I just want you to have everything you ever wanted. That's what Jacy's mom always told her. And Jacy felt like she finally did. Newly married and with a baby on the way, Jacy and her new husband Jed embark on their first road trip together to visit his father, Doctor Ash, in Michigan's far-flung Upper Peninsula. The moment they arrive in the cozy cottage in the lush woods, Jacy feels bathed in love by the warm and hospitable Doctor Ash, if less so by his house manager, the enigmatic Mrs. Brandt. But their Edenic first days take a turn when Jacy has a health scare. Swiftly, vacation activities are scrapped, and all eyes are on Jacy's condition. At the same time, whispers about Jed's long-dead mother and complicated family history seem eerily to be impeding upon the present. As the days pass, Jacy begins to feel trapped in the cottage, her every move surveilled, her body under the looking glass. But are her fears founded or is it paranoia, or cabin fever, or-as is suggested to her-a stubborn refusal to take necessary precautions? The dense woods surrounding the cottage are full of dangers, but are the greater ones inside?
I personally think that this is a must read book and everyone should give it a go.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group, GP Putnam for giving me an advance copy.
I have loved everything Megan Abbott has written, and "Beware the Woman" might be my favorite title by this author yet! I'm always here for a strong female narrator, and following Jacy's journey was a page-turner like no other. Highly recommend.
Excellent! I'm a huge fan of Megan Abbott's, and this exceeded my already-high expectations. A great page-turner that is perfectly paced and believably spooky. Loved it!
Usually love Megan Abbott books for the crisp suspenseful writing style. This one was different to me and more difficult to engage with while reading. The story seemed to have one key plot line with several minor twists but also wandered around in circles for far too many pages. Not unique, not exciting, not my favorite from a usually great author.
Many thanks to NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Putnam for the opportunities to read this ARC.
Forget the TV show Naked and Afraid. Pregnant and Afraid is so much worse.
I love Megan Abbott's writing. Her novels have the best concepts and I love her character studies as well. This one fell a little flat for me, as my horror brain was really wanting the plot to go somewhere other than where it actually went. That's all on me though, as Abbott has once again turned out (see what I did there) another nuanced slow burn thriller. Some other reviews state that an Epilogue may help tie up the story, and though I would never tell an author what to do with their story I would read an additional chapter IN A HEARTBEAT.
If you're a fan of Megan Abbott's work this is another good one. And if you've never read any of her work, don't let the somewhat low ratings on Goodreads fool you. All of her books are great in their own way, especially if you go in somewhat blind.
My thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Loved this new Megan Abbott! Definitely different from her other work but you could still feel her voice throughout.. From page one you know something is off, but once you realize the worst is happening you can't put the book down.
I usually love all of megan abbotts books but I struggled to get into this one. The concept was interesting, but fell flat in the all other areas. The storyline seemed promising but was a slow slow. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC
Very different than her usual, domestic thriller meets American Gothic. It kept me turning the pages.
I have read all of Megan Abbott's books and they never disappoint... Loved this one although it started a bit slow.
First I want to thank NetGalley and PENGUIN Group for the ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This was an odd book. I struggled to get into this book from the start as I didn't feel like the writing flowed well and it felt a bit choppy. The main character, Jacy, married Jed after a short courtship and then once she was pregnant they decided to go visit Jed's father in Michigan. The book gave me the impression that Jed didn't get along with his father and that is why they had not went to see him prior to now. Once they get to the house, things start out simple enough but turn weird within a few pages. Jacy starts bleeding and they rush her to a local doctor which is a family friend of the dad. This is where the book takes some unexpected twists and turns and what kept me reading it. The dad is oddly over protective and Jed ends up being a pushover since all he wants is he dad's approval. The major plot twist at the end was one I didn't see coming. Which is why I ended up giving this review 3 stars.
I will still look forward to reading other books by Megan Abbott as normally I really enjoy her writing.
Newlyweds Jacy and Jed return to Jed’s childhood home for a summer visit with Jed’s father, Dr. Ash. The newly expectant couple arrives to the home, buried deep in the Michigan wilderness, without the pleasures of Wi-Fi and cell service. Soon secrets come out and questionable misogynistic comments are made by the men in Jacy’s life.
I found this book to be a slow burn of a read. Megan Abbott writes with beautiful, flows descriptions and metaphors. I was shocked by the abrupt ending that left me wanting more. Overall I found this quick read to be a satisfying thriller.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book before it comes to stores on 30 May 2023.
Pregnant and longing for family, pregnant Jacy heads out to her husbands family farm… where there’s no internet and no cell service. Once there , she realizes not everything is what it seems with her husbands family, and slowly but surely she realizes that she has become a prisoner. Now she must fight for not just her, but also for her unborn baby. Beware the pregnant woman… for that’s the mightiest kind.
While not my favorite Megan Abbott book, it did make for a locked up read.
Thank you so much to #NetGalley, the author #MeganAbbott and the publishers #PenguinGroupPutnam for extending me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
My full review will be available on all my social media sites, blogs and retail on publication day in May 2023.
Megan Abbott is one of my favorite authors for when I want a well-crafted psychological thriller. Her stories are always refreshingly sharp, unapologetically cruel at times, and unflinchingly incisive. Beware the Woman gets inside Jacy’s head and marriage, as the story explores marriage, the families we assume through it, and their devastating traumas and secrets. Beware the Woman delivers smart thrills in spades.
I'm a fan of Megan Abbott's previous books, so I was surprised at how much this one did not mesh with me. I struggled to connect with the style of the narrative, and pacing-wise, it felt like nothing was really happening. Unfortunately, it was a miss for me, but I will definitely try her next book.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
Jacy and Jed, with baby on the way make their way to visit Jed’s father, Jed mother died delivering Jed or so he was told, Jed has mixed feelings about his father, Everything was going fine until Jacy had a health scare and the. Everyone became so overprotective. She begin feeling trapped like she wouldn’t be allowed to leave. Is she paranoid or are her fears real?
When Jacy and her husband Jed finally visit his father in Michigan, she is excited to meet the rest of the family. It was a quick marriage and even quicker pregnancy but Jacy feels great - loved and secure in her relationship.
Dr. Ash is comforting and hospitable and Jacy is confused to why Jed didn't have him attend the wedding. When there is a health scare threatening her pregnancy, the atmosphere changes dramatically and Jacy is unsure about her place in this rural area.
Abbott turns the screw slowly as a staccato beat of fears pound in Jacy's head. The writing reminds me of the style of Joyce Carol Oates and it places you right at the cabin, right in the heart of rural Michigan and right in the jaws of danger. If you like your psychological thrillers creepy, root for the woman always, or just love the twisty horror of Megan Abbott, Beware the Woman is for you! #Penguin
