This book follows Lily — a senior about to graduate from boarding school. With two weeks of school left, she is invited to join the school prank from the senior class Jester, who happens to be her ex boyfriend.
I really enjoyed this book!! It was so fun watching Lily and her friends pull off this senior prank and also seeing Lily and Tag reunite. I’m a sucker for second chance romances! I loved that it was YA and the boarding school/beach vibes were so fun! The descriptions made me want to be there.
I do wish there was more romance and it felt a little slow at times, but overall I really liked it and I think it will be the perfect summer read.
This book had the same vibes as Summer of Broken Rules, which I loved. Full of Taylor Swift and Schitt’s Creek references. Such an enjoyable read.
I fell in love with this book from the very beginning, from the cute cover to the exciting description I didn't stand a chance. I am a sucker for YA romances, and What Happens After Midnight did not disappoint. This fast-paced second chance romance kept me on the edge of my seat and chewing my nails, hoping Tag (and the rest of the jester's group) didn't get caught! The dialogue between Tag and Lily was absolutely adorable and it just makes you wish they'd get back together. What Happens After Midnight is a quick and easy read, and you won't regret picking it up! :)
What Happens After Midnight is one of the cutest YA rom coms I have ever read! A group of high school seniors meet with a mysterious "Jester" at midnight and adventure ensues as they try to pull off an epic senior prank. Throughout the night the main character, Lily, must face her fears, her ex boyfriend, and find herself all while trying to avoid getting caught. This book has the sweetest second chance romance, too many Taylor Swift references to count (I had so much fun trying to find them all!), Schitt's Creek references, an exciting scavenger hunt, and a Gilmore Girls mother/daughter relationship. If you are looking for a fast paced, adventurous, sweet YA rom com, look no further!
Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for an ARC of this book!
What if we played a game, a prank of sorts, and it ended with me wining your heart back? This is what this book is. Lily is the good girl and Tag is the popular guy. They were together but life separated them until their senior year when they decide to pull a senior prank. This books is one of the best second chance romances I’ve read and it’s incredibly funny.
In-depth breakdown (possible spoilers ahead):
Initial thoughts:
I’m loving it! Also the way the book is divided into clues is genius. I’m loving the schitts creek references. Not only that but I love Lily’s relationship with her mother it’s so wholesome. I think each character was established extremely well. And it’s so fast paced I could read this in one seating. It’s so interesting I don’t want to put it down.
My thoughts halfway through:
So far I’m really liking the book. Tag is such a sweet guy and there’s so much chemistry between them. I do have to admit I like seeing how everything goes down but I wished we would also get by now what the next couple of days would be like of Daniel finding the books are missing. I’m guessing we’ll get a bit of this towards the end and it makes sense because the title is what happens after midnight so it makes sense that it’s all about this night but I’m also wishing for more of the day after. Still I’m loving the group dynamic.
Final thoughts:
I loved seeing the rest of the night evolve. I loved seeing part of Daniel finding about the yearbooks. I have to admit that towards the end it felt like the story was dragging on, I wished it ended sooner. I was also expecting more out of the conversation between Lily and tag but it was good it was just missing something that I can’t quite put my finger on. Overall this was a really good book. So definitely recommend.
This was an adorable second chance romance. I loved the friendships and the prank. Boarding school setting will always be great
K.L Walther is back with another cute and fun read. Set mainly over of the course of one night, Lily goes on an adventure with none other than her ex-boyfriend revealing old feelings and memories. I adored the story. It was such a fun adventure to be on alongside Lily, Tag and all their friends. As a Taylor Swift fan myself, I had a blast looking for all the references to her songs (hint: there’s a lot!!) I couldn’t put this book down, wondering where the story would go. Walther is able to write from the perspective of a teenager so well and it brings me back to my teenage years. She really gets it. I want to be friends with these characters and live in Rhode Island with them. You get to know each character and care about their part of the story as well. Lily and Tag were incredible main characters and I was rooting for their love story throughout the book.
If you love second-chance romance, a strong mother/daughter relationship (think Gilmore Girls), and good girl x popular guy: you will love this.

Undeniably adorable fun! K. L. Walter’s books never fail to be a lighthearted, enjoyable time, and a dream for Swifties. I loved the concept of this book; following the characters are they plotted and schemed, all without trying to get caught was so thrilling.. The characters and their relationships really left off of the page and in my heart.
I loved reading about Tag (obviously), and I think it was one of the first times I’ve followed a main character in a book who has diabetes. It felt so naturally, but importantly integrated into the story
I was having the time of my life trying to find all of the Taylor Swift references, and man they did not disappoint.
And the nicknames! I am such a sucker for nicknames, and Hops definitely didn’t disappoint haha.
If you’re looking for an interesting, fast paced, adorable YA rom com, this is it!
If happiness was in a form of a book, it would be <i>What Happens After Midnight</i>!
Lily is tapped by the Jester to help execute this year's senior prank. Turns out that the Jester is none other than her ex-boyfriend Tag. Unwilling to back down, Lily decides to join in and help steal the school's most prized end-of-the-year item, the yearbooks, all in one night. With all the clues scattered across the campus, Lily can't help but think back to all the memories that she shared with Tag. Will they succeed in their silly prank and keep their hearts together after midnight?
This book was a delight to read! I was so immersed in their prank, holding my breath at moments when they were about to be found out. It's truly spectacular how K.L. Walther keeps you so engaged in one single night. The characters were well-developed, and the banter between Lily and Tag were the sweetest! The Taylor Swift song references were also so fun, like I was on my own scavenger hunt, highlighting them as they appeared on the page!
I loved the Summer of Broken Rules and was so excited to read this book and just like with the Summer of Broken Rules, I fell in love with this book. K.L Walther's style of writing always sweeps you straight in and I love the way she writes such sweet romances while also taking you on a fun adventure that makes you wish you were actually there. While there wasn't a lot of tension between the main characters, I loved the sweet, casual intimacy and affection they shared and the soft love between them just melted my heart. I also loved the boarding school setting, the interactions and friendships between all the characters, the suspense of the senior prank, and of course all the Taylor Swift, Gilmore Girls, and Schitt's Creek references! Def recommend this book!
Kaethe has done it again!
The characters in this story were relatable, funny, and real. The whole time I was reading I kept thinking back to my high school years and finding similarities to my old friends and the characters in this book.
The writing is lovely as always, and I am a big fan of the Pride and prejudice references, & Taylor Swift references. This is such a fun read and I highly recommend!
Even though it does not take place in the summer, it still gives you the feeling of a fun, lighthearted, good book:)
And I am definitely going to be rereading this over the summer!
