I sometimes struggle with books that follow the lives of many different characters. I find it hard to get invested in the lives of so many characters. However, with this book, although I struggled with untangling some of the names, I did find myself invested in some of the characters, but found it very hard to like others or care about what was going on. I also found the "grand reveal" at the end to be a little rushed. I feel it could have done with a little more time to come to the final scene at the house.
Enjoyable, multi-point of view domestic suspense / neighborhood mystery that will leave you guessing.. until the satisfying conclusion! The reader is kept guessing until the last 15-20% of the book when the tea is spilled - not literally - and all things come to light. My favorite part of the book was the message boards because they were so hilarious. Although there are a large cast of characters they’re easy to keep track of. Characters are dynamic and well described. Great domestic suspense, perfect for a beach read, book group or anyone looking for an interesting read that will keep you guessing! Thank you NetGalley for an early read I really enjoyed this book!
The Block Party by Jamie Day is a terrific novel that allows the reader to become fully immersed in the families that live on Alton Road. The characters are well developed and they are shown in all their humanity. Alcoholism, marriage discord, and intrigue make this a fast read. I could not put it down! The novel is told in different voices. This writing technique works extremely well. The Block Party begins and ends with an annual party. What happens in the year between these two block parties makes this novel one that is very compelling. . Thank you to author Jamie Day, netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read and review this novel.
Alton Road? Not a road I’d like to live on. But boyyyyy does it provide enough drama and intrigue for multiple books! And I’d read every one of them.
The secrets being harbored at the beginning of this book were explosive. The story was fragmented, and as we went back in time to see it all unfold, everything came to light a tiny bit at a time. I absolutely love dual-timeline stories where details are revealed like this.
The characters were all flawed…all had to deal with some difficult shit…and all managed to come through it in their own ways. Well maybe not all… 🤔
I’m half inclined to host a block party to see what drama unfolds. But it wouldn’t be nearly as good as this road’s drama…so maybe I’ll hold off and just re-read this book.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and St. Martin’s Press for a review copy!
A drunk mother, a defiant teenage daughter, and a whole lot of drama.
A death takes place at a neighbourhood block party. Readers learn the events leading up to the party and who/why might be motivated to murder their own neighbour.
Looking into the lives of the neighbours everyone has a motive to kill. Who is the murderer and who is the victim?
I enjoyed the book, I did find some parts predictable and it did have some slow parts but it managed to keep me entertained. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
Thank you to the publishers at St. Martins Press and Netgalley for a copy of The Block Party in exchange go an honest review.
There’s nothing more that i love than messy, dysfunctional and murderess family dynamic which what attracted me to this book. I did like the writing style of the author and most likely would read other books by Day. I would have rating this higher it I wasn’t reading from the point of view of privilege angry teenager (maybe it could have been from Brook’s POV) and the ending of this book was a real let down. I just felt like the big reveal and conclusion was wrapped in such a pretty bow that it became unbelievable.
Love me a good neighborhood drama! I was excited to read this thinking it would be a good old fashioned murder mystery. Well, it's not. What it turned out to be was a fast-paced, Real Housewives sort of story. Someone is dead in the first chapter. The rest of the story is the telling of what happened the past year leading up to that day. Very juicy, gossipy stories unfold. All the standard cliches are there, but the story is told in such a way that they are made new again. We really don't get back to the actual murder until very near the end. The who and what turned out to be pretty good. I did have an idea what was going on, but still some nice surprises and twists throughout. The only thing I really didn't care too much for was the switching from first to third person, but not a deal breaker. If you like "Housewife" drama, this is for you!
Thank you to #NetGalley, Jamie Day and St. Martin's press for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
I will post my review to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Instagram and various other book and retail sites upon publication.
It all starts at a block party on a Memorial Day. The story is all about what happens in the next year, until the next block party. The story revolves around Alex, mostly, and her daughter. It involves few families living around a cul-de-sac. Although I was able to guess the guilty party when I was half way through the book, I couldn't guess how it was going to end. 4 Stars!
I really enjoyed this book! It had some twists and turns I didn't see coming. It kept my interest and on the edge of my seat. I would definitely recommend this book.
The Block Party by Jamie Day is a unique neighborhood mystery. This book was unexpected in many ways. The characters were deeply flawed and yet real and relatable. The author did an amazing job at showing complicated relationships and the difficult decisions that result. Interesting book overall. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Quite an interesting novel. Relationships were laid bare. Some confusion here and there which all came together in the end. After trauma, happy endings.
I was really looking forward to this 6 it honestly left me disappointed. The first chapter had me intrigued, and then it went downhill from there. It took me weeks to get through the first 20%. My biggest dislike was how it switched back and forth from third person to first throughout the whole book. Super annoying. When the drama started, I was drawn in, but it was always short-lived. Honestly, this book drug on and on without going anywhere and at the 35% mark I just couldn't do it anymore. The last straw for me was the sexualizing a 17 year old. It only talked about her breasts, but to me, that's weird talking about a 17 year olds body, and pairing her with an 20 year old adult. My husband is 11 years older than me, so I do like an age gap, but let's keep them both consenting age adults.
This book was downright entertaining. You know a book is good when you read the twists and have to set it down and say “no way” out loud. I felt like I was watching a reality tv show unfold in front of me and I am 100% here for it. Let’s not forget to mention the bickering on the neighborhood forum was downright accurate. Seriously add this to your future TBR if you love twists and drama! Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC!
The Block Party is filled with so many interesting characters with so many secrets. The neighborhood has an annual party that turns deadly. Jamie Day writes a story that will have you looking at your neighbors a little closer.
The Block Party is a domestic drama debut from Jamie Day, an author I found on NetGalley. The premise pulled me immediately -- a murder at a neighborhood block party with a cast of characters similar to Desperate Housewives, a show I enjoyed for many seasons. All the characters are really well developed, someone stereotypical but also several unique and complex. Secrets explode, and just when you think you've got it all figured out, another secret is dropped. Ripe with sexual tension, drugs, classic bitchy barbs and over-the-top egos and masculinity, there are interesting modern touches applied in all the right places. Definitely liked the way the story unfolded, though I could've done without the local chat / online gossip commentaries, as it made the story feel too gimmicky. There are multiple deaths, and the cops show up to the block way too often. Not sure I'd want to be friends with any of these people, but they definitely stick with you for days afterward. Looking forward to the author's sophomore effort next year.
I’ve tried and tried and tried to get into this, and for whatever reason, I’m stuck.
I can’t even remember character names. I find myself rereading page after page.
I know I didn’t like the daughter. (Must be the adult in me!)
Maybe eventually I can finish this, but for now, there’s not enough keeping me glued to the Kindle.
*thanks to St. Martin's Press and netgalley for the ARC!*
i love a good neighborhood drama! the block party is set on a little street where everybody has money (presumably) and are too involved in each other's business (definitely). told in alternating perspectives between then and now, we get the present timeline and a year earlier, giving lots of detail about what causes all the drama in the opening scene at the annual block party.
i liked this book, i read it pretty much in a sitting. it kept me super intrigued, and i think a big part of it was not knowing exactly what the big incident was throughout the book, so you never even really know what you're waiting on to happen. it's a quick read, and had a lot of twists!
Sure to be a great summer beach read with the perfect blend of family drama, nosy neighbors, mother-daughter angst, cheating spouses and too many suspects to count for a murder at the annual neighborhood block party. A great escape read with so many twists and turns, it will keep you up late into the night to unravel all the secrets. A little over the top with so much cliche-type drama behind the doors of every mini-mansion but very entertaining nonetheless. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my brief review.
This was a good book! Sometimes different perspectives can be a little difficult to execute well. As I started reading, I really worried about whether this was a DNF for me, but Jamie Day did great! Great novel. Really enjoyed it.
Desperate Housewives on steroids is the best way to describe The Block Party. I loved the two narrators of this story. The story keeps you guessing till the very end
