Wow, Jamie Day knows how to grab the readers' attention and keep us hooked! I'm a big fan of neighborhood dramas, especially when the author writes from multiple points of view. Add some spookiness, and I'm guaranteed a few very late night reading sessions.
Having said that, I didn't always find the dialogue believable, and some of the plot points towards the end of the book felt far-fetched. I also really wanted to like at least one of the characters, but I don't think I'd want to be friends with any one of the residents of this neighborhood.
With this debut novel, Jamie Day has demonstrated that she knows how to write a suspenseful, propulsive story. I look forward to her next book!
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advance copy for review.

Ohhhhhh boy. How do I even begin with how much I loved this novel?
First off, a quick synopsis: Alton Road and its residents are an exclusive bunch. Each person has secrets that all come to a head and result in a murder.
The idea of a murder mystery caught my attention immediately. And the best part is readers know there was a murder, but don't find out until the end. We begin in the present day and then are taken on a year long journey to uncover each secret.
Each reveal was heartbreaking, but also very well foreshadowed. And I found it very nice that the chapters would switch between third person limited and first person point of views. It helped me connect with all the characters, adult and teen alike.
In the end, every loose end was tied, and it had a satisfying end.
Maaaaaannnnn now THAT was amazing! I had dreams of this book, i felt myself instantly jumping into a trance the minute i jumped in. Definitely worth the read! The suspense of the book is enthralling, it keeps you guessing… some things were a dead give away others were just hard to even imagine…. It was spectacularly easy to put the characters together, to tie them in and their links… i LOVED IT. It very much so gave the desperate housewives vibe and i loved that show so much i watched it x3 over or at least that’s when i stopped counting how many times i began from season 1 all over again.
I loved all of the characters, i loved the secrecy. To me, i have always wanted to live on a block where the neighbors are friends and the kids grow up together… reading this was so interesting because naturally i wanted to know everybody’s story and exactly how it worked out and to my amazement, it was brilliantly written and executed. Definitely buying for my shelf!
<i> Thank you to NetGalley and the Author, Jaime Day, for allowing me to review this book in exchange for an honest review ! It was 100% worth it, i definitely recommend.
The Block Party was an entertaining book with several twists I did not see coming. enjoyed the point of views used in the book and did not guess the ending. 4 stars only because there were a lot of storylines to keep in mind.
If you’re a fan of big little lies you will love this book! a block of rich families with lots and lots of issues and secrets made this book a page turner. At one point I felt a bit checked out from the story lines because it felt like there was just too much ridiculous drama but overall it was a quick fun read
What a plot twist!!!! I found this book and read what it was about and knew it was going to be so good. This reminded me of Big Little Lies in the way everyone has a secret. So addicting with the mystery and suspense. Loved this and the characters! Thank you NetGalley for the arc!!
Thank you St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Block Party on Alton Road is a yearly event thrown by the residents to welcome Summer and is apparently a very exclusive event as detailed in the town chat forum, similar to Nextdoor. Told in alternative POVs by Alex (lawyer, party organizer, alcoholic) and her teen daughter Lettie (high school activist and sometimes vandal), the story jumps between what happened in the year prior to the murder. We learn the backstory of events that led up to the unknown incident at the party. This book really had a "Desperate Housewives"/Lianne Moriarty type vibe to it. The mystery kept me guessing until the end and the group chat from the neighbors on the forum reminded me a lot of my local Next Door community. Overall, I gave this book 3 stars.
Read this during St. Patty's because i can't resist the green!
Alton Rd is this beautiful neighborhood that is known for hosting parties annually that is only exclusive to the people in the area. There are lots of drama, lots of relationship tension and many 'tangles' going on, that really keeps the suspense up in the air. And then..the affair just makes the plot a whole lot juicier. Love the characters, love the different persenalities, and the fast pace!
Thanks to Net Galley and the Publishers for allowing me to read the AC of this book in return for an honest review
I thoroughly enjoyed the book , it keeps you on edge until the end
The characters were very well developed
A lot of real day relevant issues are brought forward. Infidelity, bullying , panic attacks , alcoholism, covers them all
I recommend reading this if you love a good mystery and are interested in the social problems in the world
Wow I really enjoyed this book. Definitely happy I didn’t receive an invitation to this party. I do this this book had a few too many characters but I was invested in them so that helped. I did like the twist especially at the end I was like wow! Honestly made me wonder if my neighbors have a chat and I’m not in it lol . Joking maybe not ..
I will definitely be recommending this book. I felt like I had to rush a little because my personal life has been crazy. My rating may just go up.
Thank you net galley !
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of The Block Party. I really enjoyed the way that this book was written. It wasn't your typical who did it sort of murder mystery ? It left you wanting to know more about who died and why. The build up to the story from three different angles was great. I loved reading from Alex's POV and her daughter Lettie. It kept things interesting. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoy a good thrill ride.
Block Party is smart, twisty, well crafted mystery with extremely interesting characters. The main story told by two POVs: Alex and her daughter Lettie.
The events are told by their perspectives. The book opens with Memorial Day Block Party which was organized by Alex. During the party Alex had too much drink and being humiliated and ordered home, Alex passes out. She is awoken by sirens. What happened at the party?
As we get informed from online gossips of neighbors, we understand somebody died at the party ! But who and why? We only met Alex and her husband...then the book moves backwards from one year ago and meet with the main characters.
Thank you netgalley for this ARC
A Book about secrets and what happens when they are exposed. Scandalous, suspenseful and thought provoking. A fast read but so good! The dual timeline was amazing as was the character development.
Scandalous, suspenseful and thought provoking. A fast read but worth the time. In Meadowbrook, MA, the community on Alton Lane celebrates Memorial Day with a block party every year. A lot can happen in a year. All the neighbors in the cul de sac have secrets and the secrets will come out. Someone drinks too much, someone is suspected of killing their spouse, someone is obsessed with someone else's spouse, someone is a stalker and someone looks at naughty pictures. Wow! It's alot to sort through. Ultimately, everything is sorted and the questions are answered. This is a lesson on keeping secrets and what happens when they are exposed. It's also a lesson about what happens when you snoop and use the results to payback someone who hurt you...both adults and kids. Alex, Lettie, Nick, Mark, Emily, Riley and others, including Zoe the dog, are effected in ways they won't forget. This one will take your breath away right up to the end. An enjoyable read.
This book was so good! I appreciated the dual timeline, the depth of characters and how she really built a community within the book. There were so many pieces that were slowly put together and you really didn’t have the full answer until the very end! Good book, I would definitely recommend this! A big thank you to Jamie Day and NetGalley for the allowing me access to this book prior to the release. I gave it 4 stars but would give 4.5 if that was possible.
Residents of an exclusive neighborhood meet annually for a block party full of food, dinks and secrets. But how well do you really know your neighbors? When a murder takes place on the street this question is put to the test as secrets and lies unravel..
It was hard for me to get into this book. The beginning moves slowly and the characters were not that interesting. The premise was promising but the story did not pan out. It was just not griping enough.
I do appreciate the ARC and opportunity to leave an early review
What a fun domestic suspense novel. The characters are well drawn and distinct. The ending was not so much of a surprise and seemed inevitable, but the writing propelled me to keep on reading. I'm so glad I did. The block party setting was perfect for all of the conflicts and secrets the neighbors harbored I highly recommend this book!
This book had all the ingredients for a great story - secrets, mystery, revenge, suspence, twists and turns. I usually don't like a story that has too many characters because it can be hard to keep up with but each character was easy to follow. I kept wanting to pick up this book in any free time I had. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a domestic thriller set in a tightly knit neighborhood.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for this arc in exchange for my review.
This one was such an exciting read for me! One of my favorite suspense tropes is domestic thrillers from multiple perspectives, and this one hit the nail on the head for me.
I really enjoyed that there were a multitude of perspectives (it's definitely a personal preference of mine). It helps keep the story interesting, because you never know what's going to happen and how it's all going to connect. Day did a wonderful job at making those connections throughout the novel without giving too much away.
I will admit that at times, the story felt a bit long. I think the author could've condensed down the seasons that the book was broken up into a bit more, while still maintaining the integrity and making those important connections.
The end left me shell shocked - I did NOT expect all of those loose strings to get tied up - even some that I completely forgot about.
All in all, I would recommend this book to any of my fellow readers (and I will on my bookstagram!). I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it'll be a great read for the summer.
This book was long and every single word packed a punch. I loved it. Every character with their own storyline was so intracitely woven in together. I loved it
