I live in a cute little neighborhood and think sometimes about how good a neighborhood murder mystery would be. All the drama, we know so much about each others' lives, but would we actually be friends if we didn't live so close together? Well, Jamie Day took that idea and ran with it.

On the night of Alton Road's annual block party, sirens are seen and the nearby Nextdoor pages blow up with suggestions and accusations. We know someone died, we think someone was murdered, but we learn about who and the why throughout the book with a myriad of characters and detailed backstories.

The mystery was strong, but too many characters with too-detailed backstories. The book goes between narrators of Alex, the planner who clearly has a serious drinking problem and her daughter, Lettie. I loved the narration from Lettie-her voice was excuistely captured if you've ever met a teenager and the lack of understanding from her parents was tangible.

Overall, a good book, but there was just too much. Day could have removed a couple of characters or limited their backstories, but an enjoyable book nonetheless.

Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC.

This novel was quick to read. This was not one of my favorite books. Although it seemed like a great title, I do think this is more of a mystery book, and not a work of literary fiction. Characters are believable but not very complicated

This book was a page turner! I couldn't even guess who it was as it really kept you on the edge of your seat. I would 100% recommend this book to everyone. The story flowes well and you don't get lost when reading the POVs and time lines.

Not my favorite read. The book flips between POV's of a mother and daughter. I thought this could of been more interesting as it showed the generational differences in their experiences with what unfolds in the book. However, I found these two to be pretty boring characters. The twist at the end of the book was interesting, but overall I didn't find the book very interesting. Thank you to NetGalley, St Martin's Press, and Jamie Day for the advanced copy.

This was such a good story. I think it will be a book club pick for many. Highly recommend this one!

Holy smokes Batman this book was actually insane (In a good way of course!) I have read so many reviews from readers saying it reminded them of the desperate housewives.. but I’d say this was more housewives + Ginny & Georgia + you + every other wild show you have ever watched all combined into one.

The book draws you in and has you hooked from the beginning as all the characters had some serious BS going on in their lives. This neighborhood has some serious DRAMA and I found the book so entertaining learning all the characters backstories and how everyone is connected. This would make such a great Netflix show and would be 10000% up my alley.

A domestic thriller in the vein of Liane Moriarty with a Real/Desperate Housewives feel ala May Cobb. We know someone is dead at the Alton road annual Block Party, and the remainder of the book flushes out the who and the why.

I do think the sheer number of issues at play (alcoholism, drug abuse, rape, domestic violence, marriage troubles, troubled teen, etc) is a little overkill for one novel. However, it didn’t stop it from being entertaining. I knew one twist from the beginning, but since we don’t know who was killed until the end of the book it was impossible to guess all the twists that unfolded.

I found this one a little cliched, yet overall enjoyable. Release date is perfect, i think it’s a good book to read by the pool or on vacation.

The Block Party by Jamie Day is perfect for fans of Desperate Housewives or Big Little Lies! Alton Road has more drama and scandals than most neighborhoods have in their whole existence. It begins with a discussion on a neighborhood social media page about the annual block party and possible murder that may have occurred that night. The story takes the reader back a year, through the events that lead up to the explosive conclusion. I loved this guilty pleasure book and can’t wait to see what the author comes out with next! Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!

Fast paced suspenseful book. Starts off at a neighborhood block party and something terrible goes wrong. The book then flashes back to a year earlier where you find out what events transpired to get to that fateful day. Lots of neighborly drama. I enjoyed this book alot!

This book was enjoyable and had me guessing the whole time. It was different from any mystery/thriller I’ve read before.

I know others have said it, but I’m going to say it too: this gave me such Big Little Lies, Desperate Housewives, and Melrose Place vibes and I am here for it!! This was such an enjoyable mystery that I really didn’t want to put down. If you enjoyed BLL, you’ll enjoy this one!

A great page turner. A mix of soap opera and who-done it mystery. We start off with gossip of a possible death at the swanky Alton Road annual block party with the uninvited "other" neighbors chatting online spreading the news and information they have overheard. Starting a year back, we hear how the lives of these neighbors have led to this point of murder. The character development was excellent, as I was invested in each of the backstories of the neighbors and wanted to see how it ends. The story moves quickly with many twists and turns and possible motives with an ending that is satisfying. One of the best I've read this year.

Calling all Desperate Housewife fans, this is a book for you! “The Block Party,” kicks off with a strong start. Someone is murdered. But who is it? Who did it? Well, to find out the author takes you back in time throughout the year of that fateful day.

There’s a lot of characters in this book, so be prepared. It took me a minute to get them all straight, but the author does a good job of keeping you guessing about who is murdered.

Out this summer this would be the perfect beach read! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. 3.75 stars for me!

What a suspense filled story! My first thought was, and I’ve seen this in other reviews, Desperate Housewives with a twist!
All the characters with so many secrets and who do you believe? This is one block party that I don’t want invited to, but would definitely vacuum the front lawn to watch the drama unfold!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!

This book definitely had some twists and turns... The Block Party gave me Melrose Place type neighborhood vibes. When Alton Road gets new neighbors and they swing by for the annual neighborhood block party, no one can predict the havoc that will ensue within the following year.

Multiple Viewpoints come into play as we discover what happens throughout the year to change this group of neighbors forever. Overall I would give it 3 stars.

Book Title: The Block Party
Author: Jamie Day
Publisher: Saint Martin’s Press
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Pub Date: July 18, 2023
My Rating: 3.7 rounded up!

I have been looking forward to this story.
We have lived in the same neighborhood for years and also have an annual ‘Block Party’.
Our gathering is also at the cul-de-sac but at the end of the summer; however, instead of a murder our block party got ‘put’ on hold’ due to Covid.
We also have a neighborhood book club so hoping for a fun block party this summer and we surely will discuss THIS Block Party!

Story starts with Memorial Day and the residence on upscale Alton Road in the Meadowbrook, Massachusetts gather once again for their annual block party. Only this year someone is murdered.
Everyone is a suspect -secrets are revealed and no one really knows who they thought they knew!

Story timeline:
Memorial Day - Present Day
Memorial Day - One Year Ago.
The story one year later follows a whole year and is told from the POV of Alexandra (Alex) Fox the organizer of the block party and Lettie her seventeen year old high school - college bound daughter.
They tell us more about the neighbors then I want to know but it sure kept me guessing.
(Thankfully I saw no similarities between these neighbors and mine!)

I am a plot based fan and really not a character based novel fan but have to admit all this neighborhood drama had me curious.
I liked Lettie more than I thought I would.
Want to thank NetGalley and Saint Martin’s Press for granting me this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for July 18, 2023

Thank you @netgalley for the ARC of The Block Party by Jamie Day. This book reminded me of Liane Moriarty. In the intro, the reader discovers that someone was killed at a block party, but you do not know who it is until the end of the book. All of the characters are unlikable and they all have secrets. It was a fast paced book that kept you guessing the entire time.

Thank you to Netgalley for gifting me an ARC of “The Block Party” in exchange for my honest review! This mystery novel is a classic “who don it?” The book was good and kept me on edge but I did find it to be a bit slow. However I would still recommend you pick this up especially if you’re a fan of mystery!

I am so glad I don't live on this street. The story had potential but there is SO MUCH going on (drugs and alcohol abuse, infidelity, teen drama, rape, murder, spying, digital spying, blackmail, stalking), it was beyond overkill.

It took me a month to get through this book and would have absolutely DNF'd it if it wasn't an ARC. I seem to be in the minority though as there are many 4 and 5 star reviews on The Block Party!

Thank you to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for an advanced copy of The Block Party in exchange for an honest review.

Another rich neighborhood with secrets. The story was well-written, but the concept is pretty overused. All the usual suspects are here - too much drinking, some neighbors are a little closer than they should be, creepy adult child living at home. And everyone trying to keep the facade in place.
