This is not your typical thriller - but those on Alton Road are not your typical neighbors. I thought this book did an excellent job at creating a neighborhood where you became invested in every character (and in every character’s business). It just goes to show you that the grass isn’t always greener.
Some of the characters were unlikeable, which can happen in real life - you don’t get to choose your neighbors. But I did like that it ended with a somewhat happy ending (for some), which you don’t always get in real life.
And yes, I guessed who the killer was (but only one of them - if you know, you know).
Do you remember that show Desperate Housewives? This book reminded me so much of that show. I seriously felt like I was watching a long lost season. Instead of Desperate Housewives it would be called Desperate Housewives of Alton road, or The Real Housewives of Meadowbrook for those of you who are too young to know the other show.
The Block Party is filled with so much drama I could hardly keep up, and thanked my lucky stars I don't live in a neighborhood like that. I like neighborhood gossip just as much as the next guy, but this was nonstop. How can one neighborhood handle it all. You will have to read it to find out.
This will be a good one to add to your summer book list. Its entertaining, suspenseful, and chucked full of drama.
The Memorial Day Block Party is always the talk of Meadowbrook. Every year Alex plays host to the exclusive cup-de-sac get together but this year chaos breaks out. The book goes back exactly one year to the previous Memorial Day Block Party. Alton Road is full of secrets. No family is perfect and its a true testament to how little others know the people around them . A series of intense situations all build until the final boiling point that erupts.
This is such a great domestic thriller. My interest was held from the first page, Jamie Day gives you just enough bread crumbs chapter after chapter to keep you wanting more. I read this in one sitting, having to know what happened! The relationships between family members, friends, neighbors, etc were all so relatable.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press, the author and Netgalley for an e-ARC of this novel. I was very intrigued by this book's synopsis and it definitely delivered on the drama. I really enjoyed this one and am giving it 4 stars. I enjoyed the multiple characters, multiple plot lines and the details and twists that all came together at the end. Definitely recommend!
“the block party” by jamie day is the story of lies and deceit in an affluent neighborhood. we follow alex, an attorney turned divorce mediator, and her seventeen year old daughter lettie. throughout the year leading up to a murder on the block, both mother and daughter uncover dark, twisted secrets about everyone who lives on their street.
at the end of this novel, i still couldn’t figure out the exact motives for most of the people in the neighborhood who did what they did. their actions seem over the top. while this is an enjoyable tale, it does feel rather long and drags in some places. while alex is a wonderfully written woman with a lot of nuance and an alcohol problem, lettie is entitled and annoying; i think this novel would have been better if it solely focused on alex and her story.
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review!
TW: murder, miscarriage, alcohol and drug use, domestic assault, rape
We all know I am a faithful New Englander so the fact that this was set in a small town in Massachusetts made this an easy sell. The gossip on the towns Facebook site was a close second lol I love a good town gossip site. The amount of twists and turns in this book was swoon worthy. I loved that it read almost like a Bravo show.
The Block Party was a face paced novel full of everything a thriller lover dreams of. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait for everyone to get their hands on it come July!
I really enjoy reading books about neighbors that have way too much time invested in each other. This one was really well written and not too hard to follow with too many different perspectives! I loved the build up, I kept wondering when the ball was gonna drop!
This book had a lot going on - time jumps, dual perspectives, community social media posts, and a bunch of different mysteries within the plot. It made for a quick-moving story and a ton of excitement. Overall, I liked this a lot - rich people community drama never disappoints! 4/5 stars.
Thanks to St. Martins Press and NetGalley for the free digital ARC in exchange for an honest review! This is set to be published on July 18, 2023.
I was so excited to read this but it just wasn't for me. I disliked the writing style and could never get used to it. The characters were awful, shallow people with the entitlement of royalty without ruling. It was a tangled web of these terribly dry folks and it got confusing. There were just too many people to keep track of. There was some intrigue in the drama--th same juicy drama supplied by bad reality tv.
The Block Party was crazy good! The main characters were Alex, her daughter Lettie, her husband, Nick, Emily, her son Dylan, her husband Ken, Willow, her daughter Riley, her husband Ethan, Mandy, her son Jay, her husband Samir, and Brooke. Alex had a drinking problem. She was always drinking wine. Lettie was a senior in high school and was headed for college. She had a crush on Jay. Nick was fed up with Alex's drinking. Emily was a realtor who sold Mandy and Samir their house. She was also Alex's sister. Dylan was seeing Riley, who broke up with him for an older man, which sent him into a tailspin. Ken had a history with Mandy. They'd gone to high school together. Willow and Ethan were headed for divorce. Ethan was obsessed with Brooke, who was beautiful. Mandy's husband Samir was overprotective of her but for good reason.
Everyone had secrets, and that's all I'll say about that.
I'm sure the book was called The Block Party because there was an annual Memorial Day block party. And that's where all of the neighbors came together. But there was so much more to it than the party. There was all the drama of the secrets. I'd love to get into them but that would spoil it. I love suspense and this book had it. And there were a few twists which I love too. And the drama. There was plenty of that. Suffice it to say that I was sold on this book. I'm going to read it again. I gave it five stars.
Twisted neighborhood drama kept me reading all night! I’m really glad I don’t live on Alton Road. Although the story is told from a few points of view I didn’t find it confusing. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me, even if it does make me look at my neighbors suspiciously.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for The Block Party! Desperate Housewives meets Big Little Lies, but make it a thriller! I thoroughly enjoyed both POVs in this book, Alex and Lettie. I was gripped from the first few chapters and read every chance that I had. If you’re into domestic thrillers, add this one to you’re list! It does not disappoint.
4 STARS
This book was crazy! There was a lot going on but it was fairly engrossing. I thought this was a very good domestic thriller, similar in style to Big Little Lies, by Liane Moriarty, though with different content.
Trigger warnings: drug use/overdose, alcoholism, rape discussed and murder. Nothing was very graphic but there was a LOT going on in that neighborhood.
3 1/2 stars
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If you like Desperate Housewives/The Real Housewives of—/Peyton Place, you’ll enjoy this large cast of characters and their secrets. It was a bit slow in the middle but it grabbed me straight away and picked up speed the last twisty quarter.
Describing the Alton Road neighbourhood as an entangled web of secrets is an understatement. The Block Party has a lot of characters to keep sorted. They are all entangled but definitely not up to speed about what each other’s connection is. I plowed through it, out of curiosity. The Block Party was a one day read for me.
Thank You to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I absolutely loved the way Jamie Day told this story. We begin with Alex, the organizer of the annual Alton Road Memorial Day block party and right away something happens. We just aren't sure exactly what that something is. Then we go back one year to learn about the events leading up to the party. The story is told by Alex and by Lettie, her high school senior daughter. At times we get to read the present day comments from the Meadowbrook Online Community Page, as neighbors not invited to the Alton Road block party speculate on what's going down. These are hilarious and spot on! There's always that one person with the random comments. LOL!
The pacing was perfect. Twisty throughout, and things really picked up at the end. There is SO much going on with these people, and it could have felt too much, but the author really made it all work. Loved this one, and I'll definitely be on the lookout for Jamie Day's next book!
A HUGE thank you (as always) to St. Martin's Press and to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this.
The perfect families of the Alton Road cul-de-sac are often subject to social media gossip but rumors start spreading like wildfire on the community Facebook page after one particular block party. Five families living in McMansions driving fancy cars are the center of this story. Sometimes they hate each other, sometimes they suspect each other, and sometimes a death or two happens on their cul-de-sac.
A great domestic thriller. I was drawn to this book by the title as I live in a neighborhood that has lots of parties. The book gave away that there was a murder in the beginning, but I didn't have any idea until it finally unraveled at the end. I was too wrapped up in all the other neighbors' dramas. Each of the families has interesting things going on with their lives. It was a page turner for me and I definitely recommend reading it.
Really good whodunit with suspicious characters all over the neighborhood. And the relationships among the neighbors are crazy mixed up.
Awesome book! Full of twist and turns and neverending surprises. Really enjoyed this book! Highly recommend this to anyone that likes suspense!
