This is the third book in the Annalisa Vega series, I have read and reviewed the previous two, although I think you could read any as a standalone. Annalisa is called to the scene of a man found hanging in a cemetery, he has a word on his chest that suggests the person that did him in has an issue with the police, the dead man is Sam Tran a former policeman and current PI. Annalisa investigates the files he was working on prior to his death, one of which involves a stalker at the college her niece is attending, which means she has to talk to her brother, Vinny. Annalisa has a complicated family history, she turned in her father, an ex cop, for covering up a murder, something her family has not forgiven her for. In addition to the campus stalker, Sam was looking into a case from 20 years ago that involved the murder of two people that were having an affair, and the disappearance of a woman who her daughter believes would not have left her. And if that wasn't enough, she also has to deal with a case she was working on, the Chicken Bandit, so nicknamed because the perp wears a chicken mask during robberies. Overall a lot of balls in the air which Annalisa and her ex-hubby and current boyfriend Nick, deal with to the end. I would highly recommend this series, Annalisa is one tough lady. Thanks to #Netgalley and #Minotaur for the ARC.
Annalisa Vega is back on track but first she must open one of 3 past cases to uncover a serial killer!
Vinny Vega (Annalise's bro) hired Sam Tran to find a stalker on his daughter's campus.
She was working on a few robberies by a 'Masked Chicken Man' when she's pulled off to work this one.
It's not long before we learn her former partner is found hanging with the word P for Pig written on him.
Several clues are then addressed including her niece Quinn that clearly hits home. Another involves a couple from a hotel and lastly a missing woman from years earlier.
So, which one might be our killer?
Annalisa has her hands full with 4 open cases and the previous robberies with everything on the line including a renewed examination of her former relationship with her ex-spouse Nick.
Tons of suspense, intrigue, and mystery surround the use of syringes and Black Cat/Gorilla suits.
Were these murders meant as scare tactics to silence others?
Could this be a case of mistaken identity or perhaps these weren't murders after all but suicides?
The million dollar question to now uncover is who killed Sam? Or, at the very least what happened to Sam Tran?
This was quite the treat to read and I hope it goes off into book world with gusto.
Thank you to Joanna Schaffhausen, St. Martin's Press, and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
Detective Annalisa Vega, having solved an intense serial murder case, is working on a series of robberies committee by a man in a chicken mask when her boss puts her on a new case. A PI, who is a former cop and partner of Annalisa's commanding officer, is found hanging from a tree with the word "pig" written on his body. During the investigation, Annalisa finds possible clues in the PI's active cases, one of which involves her niece, Quinn, and a possible stalker. Another case is the search for the murderer of a local couple in a hotel years ago, along with the search for a woman who disappeared decades ago. In essence, Annalisa is juggling 4 cases, and still gets involved with the Chicken robberies. She also is struggling to make sense of her renewed relation with Nick, her ex-husband and partner. It is a compelling read with a surprise ending. I hope this isn't the last Annalisa Vega book.
4.75/5 stars! This is the first book in the "Detective Annalisa Vega" series. I haven't read the first two books, but this reads well as a standalone. I've been on a bender lately for reading Chicago-based thrillers because I'm currently living in downtown Chicago. I really appreciate authenticity in describing the setting. I was really proud of how this author handled it and I could picture myself at many of the places described. Because of this, or maybe just the author's superior writing, I was pulled deeply into the story and was shocked by the many twists and turns. A great book and I will be looking for more books by this author to read.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

There came a point when there really were just too many balls in the air. Also this detective has televisionesqe timing, which I don't love. But. She's fun and smart and extremely readable, which I do kinda love.
This is the third book in the Annalisa Vega series and they just keep getting better and better. Detective Annalisa Vega is placed on a case of an ex-cop and now PI Sam Tran, who is found hanging from a tree with a slanderous word across his chest. She must go deep into his investigative cases to find if he was killed to keep him quiet at something he may have discovered. One of the cases happened to be a stalking case that her brother had hired Tran for involving his daughter Quinn. Vega begins tracking this case, along with a homicide cold case from twenty years ago that Tran may have solved and been killed for it. Once again, Vega is joined by her partner, (ex-husband and current boyfriend) Nick Carelli in her search for the truth behind Tran’s death and to find the person who is stalking her niece Quinn. This was a faced paced read that I completely devoured. I love the relationship and banter between Annalisa and Nick which makes for a very entertaining read. I hope this series continues because I truly love these novels.
Pretty good mystery. A lot of moving parts. Some not very believable. But they do assimilate in the end. I cant say I would recommend the book but I can say it kept my interest. Thank you NetGalley and Minotaur Books for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own. #NetGalley, #DeadAndGone, #MinotaurBooks.
The third book in the Annalisa Vega series by Joanna Schaffhausen did not disappoint! Great story. Lot of guesses as to who did it (even though I did figure it out about half way through).
Would highly recommend that you read the books in order as their is an underlying storyline that provides background for character development.
Thank you #netgalley and #stmartinspress #minotaur for the eARC.
Third in the Annalisa Vega series, one of my favorite authors. Anna is investigating the death of a private investigator and also becomes involved in some of the cases he was working on prior to his death, including trying to find out who is stalking Anna's niece. This was good, as are all of the books in the series. I hope there will be more, especially as the ending has some good potential for the continuation of the series. 4 stars.
I couldn't put this down and read it over the weekend. Annalisa Vega is on the outs of both her biological father and her brothers and sisters in blue for the same reason, turning in her ex-cop father for covering up a murder, but she's still one of the best detectives on the Chicago PD. So when her boss asks her to investigate the suspicious death of a former officer, Sam Tran, Anna will follow multiple trails down every rabbit hole until she gets answers. Framed by the three unfinished cases of Tran, Dead and Gone is a test of Anna's fortitude. This series is worth your time!
Thanks to St Martin's Press for access to a digital ARC on NetGalley.
Great book!! This book had some crazy twists and turns! It also had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, and some great police work! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I'm definitely going back to look up this author to read more! Definitely don't miss out on this one! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Thoroughly entertaining! Lots of red herrings, multiple story lines, great repartee! Good character development and a strong story line , while a few parts stretched your imagination, all in all it was highly enjoyable!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the copy of Dead and Gone, book three in the Detective Annalisa Vega series. Every book in this series is better than the last one, which is saying a lot because the first two books were 5 star reads. It goes without saying that the writing is top-notch and that the book is well-paced.
After Annalisa is assigned to look into the death of private detective Sam Tran she starts to investigate his open cases, looking for a clue about his death. One of the cases involves Vega’s niece, so Vega has to work with her brother.
What unfolds is a twisty story that really kept me up late reading.
Annalisa is a great character and I really like how her relationship with her family members keeps changing. (No spoilers about this book or the previous books in the series because you should read them all, but there is family drama!) If you love a great story that also excels in characters’ relationships, this is the series for you.
This book is mysterious, and the characters are not likable. At times, the story is horrific and difficult to read. This is a genre that some mystery lovers will enjoy. I could not get into the story. This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review.
This is the third book in the Annalisa Vega series. Annalisa is a Chicago police detective who must find the reason ex-cop Sam was killed. When family is involved it becomes a race to find the killer. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series.
