I’ve always been fascinated by the Amish. This was a great way to give me an inside look into different aspects of Amish life. I couldn’t get enough of this book! I want to read more about this community. After reading this book, it made me realize how we are more alike than different. I am also attracted to their simplicity of life. Very interesting and a definite page turner. Many thanks to the author, Herald Press and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

“The story of the Amish—told by the Amish.”

Family Life is a monthly Amish magazine that has letters, history lessons, questions, challenges, and parables covering all sorts of topics like clothing, shunning, humor, old age, nonresistance, etc.

Brad Igou in this second volume consisting of 14 chapters is compiled from the last 3 decades, 1993-2020.

My review…
Should be REQUIRED READING for ALL AMISH AUTHORS!

I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of “Amish Voices: In Their Own Words 1993-2020” via NetGalley from the publisher, Herald Press. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I had not read the complete book when I added Volume 1 to my wishlist. I found Volume 2 fascinating. And educational. We tend to stereotype the Amish by assuming they all are the same and very different from you and me, the English (non-Amish). Reading “Amish Voices” provides a real insight into their lives and thoughts. Wait until you read “All in a Day’s Work” by an Amish Mother! I smiled, chuckled, laughed out loud, and truly was glad I never dealt with what she did. Oh to meet some of these folks … although Mr. Yutzy and I will never agree about cleaning your plate.

The English reader may disagree with the Amish reasoning. Still, there are considerable explanations of why they dress in a “simple” way, why cell phones are not given overall approval, ride in cars but do not own them, why they don’t have electricity in their homes, etc.

What was surprising? Poetry.

I loved “A Place in the Sun” which begins “Who will take Grandma? Who will it be?” Another titled “Lament of a Senior Citizen” resonated with this senior citizen along with “A Widow’s Life”. One doesn’t think of the Amish writing poetry but some of the most poignant thoughts shared were done via poetry. I think poetry was my favorite.

So yes, I recommend volume 2 of “Amish Voices”. And yes, both volumes should be required reading for all Amish authors.

The second volume of the same name, Amish Voices was written about the Amish practically by the Amish. Three decades of letters written by the Amish and published in the Family Life magazine. The book covers a vast array topics that the Amish address from family life, farming, religion, schooling are just to name a few. Questions are asked and answers are given by the readers. I must say there was humor given, heart ache shared and lessons learned. This book I highly recommend to gain a better understanding of their daily lives. I received an advance copy by the publisher and my review is strictly my opinion.

Amish Voices, Volume 2 by author Brad Igou was a captivating book. This book is about the lives of Amish people by them. It is their voices we read and not someone’s interpretation of their lifestyle.

The Amish way of life has always intrigued me. This authentic compilation of their statements is a perfect book for others like me that have many questions about their communities and lives. The information is well organized and easy to understand. I gleaned so much from this book!

This would make a very nice gift for anyone fascinated with the Amish people. After finishing it, you will have a much better understanding of their daily life, beliefs, and communities. I highly recommend this. It gets a 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by NetGalley, but these are my honest words.

Insightful, informative, and outright interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed Amish Voices, Volume 2. What I enjoyed the most was hearing from the Amish people themselves and not just an account of what they may have said and felt. Their ability to stand the test of time is just one thing that makes this culture so fascinating. I love the authenticity and voices across the generations. If you have ever been curious and just had questions regarding how the Amish live, this is a great place to start!

I’ve always been fascinated by the Amish community as a baptist, and this compilation was just the kind of thing to give me an inside look into so many different aspects of the Amish life from so many different perspectives. I couldn’t get enough of this book! I’m eager to keep reading and learning about this community, and also it made me realize how so many of their values and mine align it just shows itself in different forms- but also the Amish lifestyle looks more appealing after reading this and just thinking about the simplicity of life. Fascinating and well done book, straight from Amish people themselves.
