In this manga we follow Dani, who is a tennis prodigy and is coached by her mom who was also a pro tennis player. Dani is about to go to the championship when she suffers from a heart attack during a match. This effectively sidelines her from playing tennis for awhile. She ends up going to stay with her cousin on the coast to recouperate and heal from the trauma of what happened to her. While there she meets a girl, Blanca, who is vacationing with her sister. The two bond and eventually fall in love.
This is such a fantastic manga. I liked how it dealt with grief, for Dani and for her mom. I also enjoyed how Dani and Blanca's relationship changed over the course of the book. They had their ups and downs but they genuinely seemed like they got it together in the end.
Thank you for the review copy. I'm a bit torn by Sirius. On one part, I thought that the tennis storyline was touching, that the drawing was really beautiful and I enjoyed the relationship between the two main characters. But, I thought that so many of the relationship were just feeling a bit "off". I don't know if it's because it's not originally Japanese and that I could feel the cultural difference that framed the story differently from what I'm used to and what I was expecting. The way the characters behaved and discussed felt very real and natural, just not exactly in the way that I'm used to in the manga I usually consume. I guess its a strength for a manga to be able to stand out among all what's the genra has to offer!
In the end, I'm really happy I got to read Sirius and I wish to see a lot more story like this to be published.
This manga was definitely one that was bittersweet for the majority. On one hand, we have our main character dealing with healing and grief and on the other, we get to see the adorable friendship and relationship blooming between the two girls.
I liked the messages in this, how they were woven together with astronomy. It made it easier to get through the harder aspects of this manga and enjoy the soft moments.
This is one I'd recommend if you're looking for a queer soft, yet also deals with harder topics sort of manga!
Sirius: Twin Stars is a sweet manga that follows Dani, a tennis player whose dream is to go pro. After a heart attack during a game seems to cut her career short and ruin her relationship with her mother, she decides to spend her summer in a coastal village where she meets the enigmatic Bella, who reminds her that she can still shine just like the stars.
I thoroughly enjoyed this cute, inspiring book, and I adored the bond that organically grew between Dani and Bella. The emotions of their feelings and Dani's struggle with her future, her family, and herself were all balanced, and I enjoyed the unique setting (for a manga, of course) of a Spanish coastal town. This one is surely not to be missed!
A super-cute story about a girl who was a rising star in the world of tennis before a problem with her heart forced her to retire and the relationship she develops with another girl she meets while trying to recover, "Sirius" is one of those comics that steals your heart while you are distracted with its naivety and cuteness, a simple (there aren't really any surprising developments here) story that nonetheless catches the reader's attention and makes them care about what is happening to Dani and Blanca. The artwork (manga style) is also really cute and suits the story perfectly (even if a little uneven here and there).
However, there are a couple of points that stop me from giving this a higher rating:
First, the way the two main characters meet and how Sánchez justifies Blanca's behavior was not well handed in my opinion, and feels forced (and leaves a somewhat bad aftertaste). Second, the relationship develops too fast and a little bit more of space to let the characters develop and breathe would have been better (maybe impossible because of limitations of space - a 'just one volume' story -, but nonetheless too rushed).
However, this is a totally recommended read.
This is the story of a girl who has a future as a tennis star until doctors discover a heart condition. Now she travels to a small coastal village with her cousin and learns that maybe things aren't as bad as they seem. I am not a fan of sports comics. I rarely get into them. That being said this was a 5 star read. It was so week and I completely connected with the overbearing mom. I cannot wait to get my hands on the physical copy the art is stunning. Excellent story!
5 stars.
Dani has always wanted to be a professional tennis player, just like her mother. That is, until she crumbles under her mother's expectations and an emergency on the court leads to what feels like her exile to her family vacation home. At night, she meets Blanca when she accidentally triggers Dani's heart condition and lands her in the hospital. The two quickly strike up a friendship that becomes something more. As they fall in love, Dani finds Blanca's dreams pushing her to reconsider her own.
A sweet sapphic romance! I really loved this, the art is wonderful and the character arcs were really endearing. I loved that there was more interiority to Dani and Blanca beyond their love for each other but there still remained a real emotional resonance to them.
Sweet, short, and sapphic! I really enjoyed the story and would love if it was extended to a multi-volume series.
Thank you Independent Publishers Group and NetGalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Artwork is very pretty and love the cover (it's just beautiful). You would never have guessed that this book was done by a Spanish author as the author illustrates the book in such perfect Japanese manga style. The plot is cute and sweet.
Absolutely stunning and heartfelt book. Loved the story. It even made me cry. The art was beautiful. The characters were very well written. I related to Dani so much ! And Blancha was just heartwarming to read about. Their chemistry was very well done too. I loved everything about them. The ending was so nice. Overall i love this book to pieces.

First want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this in exchange for an honest review. What a story! It is cute and from what I can see is just one book but the story is so touching. The way these two come to be and even at the end, what a way to warm up on a chilly day!
Thank you Netgalley and Independent Publishers Group for this ARC. I absolutely enjoyed this story. The first meeting between Blanca and Dani was weird but it was easy to push past. The rest of it was a wonderful tale of friendship to more. I felt that Dani's feelings about the situation and her relationship with her mother was very well written. The healing process was very realistic and it represented parent/child coaching situations accurately from what I've witnessed from friends. This book is definitely a great example and I would recommend it to anyone having trouble healing from a situation like this.
Me gustó mucho la trama, fue muy interesante para mi leer sobre una tenista y el romance entre las protagonistas me parecio muy lindo
Before I begin this review, I would like to thank TokyoPop and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this title.
It has been one month since I reviewed a manga title, and this time, we’re taking a brief break from reviewing Shonen Manga and moving into my very first yuri manga review.
Sirius: Twin Stars focuses on a young lady named Dani, who was an Elite Tennis Player with a bright future ahead of her. That was until she suffered a heart attack during a match. It forced her to retire from the sport, not only affecting her health but also affecting her relationship with her mother and her career.
Dani wanted to get away from it all, her problems, and the big city. So, she decided to go to a small village on the coast where her cousin was staying. She meets a girl named Bianca, who is full of life, and has a love for astronomy. Bianca reminds Dani that life can be beautiful, and she can shine again as the stars do.
I’ll be honest about this story, it has a great premise, and it was downright adorable. A story about chasing your dreams and finding the person that accepts you for all that you are. It reminded me of Wandance in some ways, in the aspect of chasing your dreams and meeting that one person that could change your life forever. I felt bad for Dani in the beginning, having to retire early from something she loved and having to wrestle with the feeling of being a disappointment to her family, and the impact of her newly discovered health condition is a lot to process, something a lot of readers can relate to.
Bianca was one of my favorites in this story. She was emotional and vibrant, not to mention well-written. The script was good, but the only downside to this was the use of tropes, such as Miscommunication, which is a common factor when it comes to romance and romantic comedies. I was impressed with Ana C. Sánchez’s artwork and writing. It was my first time reading her work, and I am happy I got the chance to read this beautifully drawn manga.
Review to come January 5th to blog/goodreads/etc..
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I was so excited to see a new graphic novel by Ana C. Sánchez. I loved love Alter Ego (see review here), and so I was excited for this one, and I can promise it delivered it all. I cried, I cheered, I loved everything. I am going to try write a review, but my emotions are still *points to the sky* so it may be a bit chaotic.
In this gorgeous graphic novel with manga style we meet a girl named Dani and a girl named Blanca. These two don't know it yet but they are going to have a summer of stars, sweet moments, and friendship... that blossoms into much more.
I absolutely loved the two girls. Loved to get to know them. Dani was at first a bit not there, pushing everything away, but as we learn her story... I can imagine. Having a dream and seeing it shatter like that, the pain she went through and then even more, the recovery, her mom in depression, her dad being her dad. I had a bit of a laugh when she, instead of taking it easy, she went to find an easy job in a store nearby. This girl! I loved how she protected Blanca (for real, this girl is so not impressed with anything) and how they got together and started to get closer and closer. I loved how she opened herself up and that she took Blanca's advices to heart. To see there is still beauty in the world, that you shouldn't just give up your dream.
And Blanca. She was just such a fun character, pretty much the polar opposite of Dani. She also has a dream. She wants to do something with astronomy. She is totally addicted to stars. Watching them. Learning about them. The camper she and her sister live in for the summer is filled with starry things. I am so glad that the Blanca we saw with those girls is not the real Blanca. Then again, given what we learn... *wants to shake some people*. In fact, Blanca is passionate, sweet, and strong. And I love how she sparkles each time she talks about something she is excited about. I also love how she is there for Dani. How she tried to help her out, to motivate her, to show her life is beautiful. You just have to look up and not give up.
I am so glad that these girls talked. There was one moment that I was like, COME ON, TALK ALREADY. Stupid miscommunication trope. But for the most of the book they talk. About everything. Family. Friendship. Love. What happened to Dani and if she should pick up that phone one day or not. Astronomy. Dreams. Hopes. What this is that they are going to be exploring. I absolutely love it when we have characters who talk.
The setting that they were close to the sea? Love it! I would definitely visit this tiny town. See the sights. Melt in the heat. XD
I loved that we also got to see one or two bits with Dani's dad. I was already wondering on his thoughts regarding what his wife did to their daughter. What he thought of how far his wife went. And what he thinks of the situation as it is now. I do feel that he could have done better. It feels like he just turned a blind eye, while almost everyone could have clearly seen the abuse. And yes, I would call it that. Dani has a dream. And yes she has to work hard as heck to get where she wants to go because pro tennis is no cookie. But to shout at her, bully her, make her drop friends, to drive her to the ground? No. That is the wrong way. Even if mom had a dream, you should look at it realistically instead of just forcing and pushing and shoving.
The ending, good lord, I thought it couldn't get any better, but BOOM, there we go. This was a wonderful ending to this gorgeous book. I am so happy to see the two again and see where they ended up. To see them all grown up. I was already an emotional puddle, well this made me a bigger puddle. XD
The art is just absolutely stunning. Ana C. Sánchez has an epic drawing style and I love how she is able to capture emotions, not just through expressions, but through other ways as well. I also loves the cover which so clearly shows how these two characters are. Especially in the beginning of the story.
So I would recommend this book to everyone. A gorgeous heart-breaking (I cried), but also inspiring read featuring two fantastic characters.
Sirius is a tender and sweet one-shot manga that tells the story of how two girls fall in love with each other and with their dreams.
Blanca and Dani make a wonderful couple. Despite everything Dani went through, she is still so supportive. And Blanca is tender and open to Dani's pain. It's honestly such a beautiful story.
This was such a cute graphic novel, made even better by the sapphic rep! Perfect if you want a quick, lighthearted read with beautiful art that will make you squeal with joy.. I liked the premise and the fact that both girls were incredibly passionate individuals who supported each other unconditionally. I have no complaints about this, other than that I wish the romance had been a little bit more fleshed out.
Fist thing that I need to point it out of this manga, is that the drawing is gorgeous, and it’s written and drawn just like a Japanese manga, actually if I didn’t know that the author was Spanish I could swear that the author was Japanese, the drawing reminds me of classics but with clear backgrounds if that makes sense.
The story is also gorgeous, with a shoujo-ai love story between Dani and Blanca, and I do love a romantic love story, Dani was a teen superstar in Tennis but she had a heart attack and had to have an operation to her heart, and her life was never the same and Blanca is a girl with big dreams among the stars, and she may be exactly what Dani needs to be able to come out of her shell.
What else can I say beside that this manga is very much worth of your time, grab it for yourself and you’ll fall in love with the story and with the art of Sense Sánchez.
Thank you NetGalley and Independent Publishers Group for the free ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review!
This was adorable. I’m crying over here. I was drawn to this by the cover and I was not disappointed. This is a story about chasing your dreams and finding the person who accepts you for all that you are. I can’t get over how much I loved Dani and Blanca. I want only good things to happen to them.
Dani has given up on everything when she has a heart attack during her tennis match and has to retire early from being a pro player like her mother. Feeling likes she’s disappointed her whole family, she goes away to stay with her cousin for a while. There she meets Blanca, who is traveling through town with her sister. Blanca is in love with the stars and dreams of being an astronomer. She shows Dani that she is still a shining star and that her dreams can still come true.
This was pure and sweet and full of moments that had me sniffling with happiness. I can’t get over how amazing the art is too. Everything about this was spot on. Definitely checking out more by this creator.
I loved this! This manga was everything I wanted and more! I have a heart condition so seeing any sort of representation always makes me so happy. This manga just made me so happy and warmed my heart. I wish this was a series and not just a stand alone but that only because I love these characters so much. If you are a fan of sweet yuri manga do yourself a favor and read this one. You will not regret it in fact you may be like me and find a new favorite.
