1.5 I'd be lying through my teeth if I said this was good... it was not. the beginning was very promising but everything just went downhill from there, was lowkey excited for it but unfortunately it just wasn't for me. thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review
This was my first Anna Huang book and the only one I’ve read so far. (Though, I’m excited to read more of her books!!) I think this was a decent romance. Some of the tropes were questionable but I loved that it was set in Shanghai as it explored a little bit of culture. :)
Sadly I was not a fan of this
All the characters seemed too immature and their relationship was made unbearable by their total lack of communication
I'm a huge fan of Ana Huang's Twisted series so I was very excited to go back and read her other books.
My feelings for this book are very much divided. I really enjoy Huang's writing as a whole and think the characters had good development through the book. She also does a fantastic job of writing scenery, I loved everything about this taking place in Shanghai. I didn't particularly love Farrah and Blake's relationship. They were so opposite and so young that the lack of communication was frustrating.
I think if I didn't jump right into the next book right after this I would have not enjoyed this first one on its own. The book overall would have benefited from an age bump or even a maturity bump.
I already really enjoy Aiden Snow and Cindy Kay as narrators. They killed it with the twisted series and they narrated Lauren Asher's audiobooks as well. I do think their voices were a bit mature for this particular set of characters though,
Thank you Netgalley, Tantor Audio, and Ana Huang for this ALC in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars
The audiobook narrators were great but I didn't like the story. I liked that the book was set in a college in Shanghai and being part of the friend group was great which I also liked in her twisted series. The fact that the story involves the guy cheating on the girl was a big no for me and I got put off from the book because of it. I really enjoyed her twisted series but I don't think this series is for me but I'm interested in her latest works.
Thank you for the author and publisher for granting me a review copy of this novel. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this book and didn't finish it. Around the time that the male protagonist started talking about his feelings towards his cock, I felt as though this was a bit of a spoof of a romance novel and that's not something I really enjoy reading. As I didn't finish it, I'll give it a midling reading just in case it picked up by the end.
Ana Huang can do absolutely nothing wrong and I will stand by that statement until the day I unalive. She’s so good at creating characters and tension and I will always adore her books
I received the approval for the audio version of this book and then it was archived just a few short days later, so unfortunately I did not get a chance to listen.
I will get a version and update my review once I am able to read/listen.
I usually like this authors books but I was disappointed in this one. It was very slow moving. I think it had a decent plot, it just wasn't executed in a way that held my interest.
ana huang is one of my all-time favorite and auto-buy authors, so i was excited to finically dive into her backlist titles!
i’m not much of an audiobook listener, so i read along with the e-book version to help me follow the story better.
it was apparent how much ana’s writing style has improved and evolved from this book to the twisted series and the kings of sin series. i really enjoyed farrah & blake’s story and liked how it was set in shanghai. i can’t wait to see the final conclusion of their story in book 2, if the sun never sets!
thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for an audio review copy!
Ana Huang is an auto-buy author now so I had to read her other books, and when this one came in audio, no less, I had to get it.
The story
These books are less smutty than her new ones. This takes place in Shanghai and it is about a group of college kids. I loved seeing Farrah build her own friend group and open up a little more. Farrah is a very romantic kinda gal and Blake is a bit of the opposite. He is a former football star and has some fame if you know, you know. It was great to see the heroine come out of her shell and fall in love with the hero. They both soften up to each other and bring out the best of one another. I’m so excited to listen to the next book which continues their story, and I did not know it was a duet. But looking forward to it.
The audio
It wasn't my favorite style of writing, Ana clearly evolved in the Twisted Series, and found myself not paying a lot of attention to the story as I should. The good thing is that the narrators did a great job and while not paying a lot of attention, I didn't lose any part of the book, and it's definitely that audio that you can play in the background while doing other stuff. I think both narrators were perfect for the characters and how they portraired them.
I was great as an audio book. The narrators were perfect for their parts and kept me engaged the whole time.
The story was ok, the miscommunication got on my nerves a bit but otherwise was an easy listen.
Thank you for the arc, NetGalley, in exchange for my honest opinion.
If We Ever Meet again by Anna Huang was surprisingly good. I was expecting it to be alittle darker going in after reading the Twisted series but it was refreshingly lighter, with enough angst to keep you wondering how its going to end.
I think the most surprising part of this story was how strong Farrah was when Blake came back asking for his second chance. She for sure stood her ground for about 75%-85% of the book. And it was for very good reason.
The story felt a little meh for me, a little unrealistic I guess? thats the only reason for the 3 star rating. Just didnt hit the mark. The narration was good and the overall was good. Just wished the story had a little more bones to it.
This book, safe to say was not for me! The narrators voices annoyed me very quickly, I hated the characters and the story
If We Ever Meet Again is definitely a story of opposites attracting. Blake is a former football star from Texas looking to start fresh. Farrah is an aspiring interior designer from LA who is looking to spread her wings. Both decide to spend a year studying abroad in Shanghai.
I absolutely loved the setting, and I wish it had played more of a role in the story. I did find that some of the activities the study abroad student engaged in felt very against typical Chinese culture - especially the amount of drinking the students do.
I was a little surprised that Blake and Farrah get together, I would not have expected those two in a relationship. That said, as their relationship progresses, and they run into relationship hiccups, the non-communication between the two drove me UP. THE. WALL. Seriously, people. Just freaking talk to each other.
I was also totally blindsided by this ending. When I started listening to If We Ever Meet Again as an audiobook, I did not realize it was part of a series. And thank goodness it is, because YOU CANNOT JUST LEAVE THE ENDING LIKE THAT!
Thank you to NetGalley and Tanto Audio for the gifted audio review copy of this book.
This story has everything. Love, friendship, family. Love how it tells the story of Farrah and Blake and at the same time it also tackles about a strong friendship and the importance of family. Ana also managed to describe China and some of their cultures. You can really feel all the emotions even if you're just reading them.
I want to recommend this audiobook to everyone by stating that it has one of the best opening chapters that I've read. I was sucked into the situation immediately, the performance was as exceptional as I've come to expect from Aidan Snow (followed by Cindy Kay after this first chapter who is also an enormous delight!) and all I wanted to do was revel in the safe place of this romance book. I don't want to spoil anything else, but I hope you all enjoy it!
I had to DNF this. I didn't understand it and got confused right off the bat. I tried to get in to it, but couldn't.
The characters changed names? I think? The jumping forward in time, yet the characters were the same...I just don't know.
One year to study abroad in Shanghai, two complete opposites people and a love so deep that will blindside and shatter them. If We Ever Meet Again by Ana Huang is a steamy (insta-lovey) college romance set in Shanghai you'll fly through.
The characters are very likeable and well rounded. The writing is easy to follow and captivating. The city of Shanghai is very much part of Farrah and Blake's love story, with its atmosphere and its unique food and culture.
I read If We Ever Meet Again on audiobook and I really enjoyed it. The narrators, Cindy Kay and Aiden Snow really fit the characters and they really brought the story to life. The story is told switching point of view between the two main characters and I feel like this continuous POV change really helped to keep the flow of the story and kept me really entertained while listening.
The story ends on a cliffhanger, so keep that in mind when starting this book. Personally, I found myself so invested in the story and the characters that I'll definitely continue the series and, since I enjoyed the narration, I might wait for the audiobook to come out.
***Thank you Netgalley and Tantor Audio for the audiobook of If We Ever Meet Again in exchange for my honest opinion***
I really enjoyed this book. I don’t know if it was intended to be YA or if it was just about younger adults. It was a little mature for YA, but had very To all the boys vibes. Reader beware, you are going to want to have the second one handy when this one ends.
Overall I enjoyed the writing and the narration. The characters were likable and I got invested in their stories. I am excited to continue the series.
