The Mother of All Degrassi: A Memoir was a great read by Linda Schuyler. Linda Schuyler is the co-creator and executive producer of the Degrassi series. Linda was a young schoolteacher that decided to teach her Grade 8 class about filmmaking. She created a documentary that was broadcast internationally. This set in motion her career as a story teller for an age group that is usually ignored by TV executives. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
Linda Schyuler is my entire childhood and I loved this.
Degrassi was an integral part of my childhood and learning about the woman behind my favourite show of all time was such a joy to experience. Truly, truly wonderful.
Six Stars If I really could
The Mother of All Degrassi by Linda Schuyler did not disappoint. I absolutely adored it. The memoir chronicled all aspects of her life from early childhood in Britain to her recent retirement and sale of her company. I learned about her life in college and her start in the film industry. I also learned that she was a teacher, her first few years were in Junior High and that definitely set the stage for the rest of her life, directors and producers are really just teachers in a way, especially if they are working with teenagers! I loved learning about the Canadian media industry before I was born and how it has evolved into the streaming services we know and love today. I carefully studied the history of Degrassi as told by the creator, learning all about the first few series that came before my time. I loved Linda's open discussion of the challenges she faced as a woman CEO in Canada in the 1970s, and her description of the many waves of feminism that she was in some way connected to over time. I felt heartbreak and fear when negotiations with broadcasters meant risking everything for what she believed in. Thank you Linda for standing up to them about that and going on to create a show I love. And thank you to NetGalley and EWC Press for giving me the chance to relive my angsty teen years with way less angst by reading and reviewing this wonderful book.
A special note about the audiobook version: The narrator is good, and the story is maintained and as interesting as in the written form. I would definitely recommend the audiobook as much as the written book, depending on a reader's preference or availability. Thanks again NetGalley!
3.5 stars!
I was so excited to listen to The Mother of All Degrassi when I received it because I grew up with the original Degrassi in the 80’s and my daughter watched the new class when it came out! It was so interesting listening about how the show came to fruition and all the obstacles that were endured to get some of the controversial episodes on air. I enjoyed hearing Linda’s story about her life and all the many paths that led her to Degrassi and the many people in her life as well.
I loved the audio because Degrassi played apart in my childhood/teen years and it really was a great show. And then for my daughter to be able to experience the next generation was amazing. I would definitely recommend this book for any fans of Degrassi!! It was truly an interesting and great listen.
This is a must read for any mega fan of Degrassi. I loved learning the behind the scenes behind the creation of this iconic Canadian show. Linda's life was equally compelling. I appreciated her owning up about her infertility and surviving that horrific car crash. My only criticism is that some of the story is told out of chronological order which often lead to moments of temporary confusion. Otherwise I loved spending more time in the world of Degrassi. Such a shame that HBO just dropped the reboot.
This book is a nostalgic trip down memory lane if you're a Degrassi Jr High and Degrassi High fan like me. Linda is a great storyteller.
Thanks NetGalley for this advanced copy of the audiobook.
This was such a fun read. I grew up watching Degrassi TNG and it was interesting to hear the behind the scenes on how favorites like Emma and Jimmy got their roles when auditioning. It was a compelling story to also hear how she got her start in the 70s and getting Degrassi Junior High and High School started. It was interesting to hear the boundaries they pushed throughout the different series of Degrassi to tell real stories that teens are facing during each generation.
I enjoyed hearing how her production team grew and how they adjusted to how different generations were growing up and what teens were facing in their everyday life. I also enjoyed listening to the start of her other shows she helped create.
For any person that grew up watching Degrassi I will highly recommend reading/listening to it.
I am a fan of the first generation of Degrassi and was aware of the newer versions but have only watched one or two of these versions but I still wanted the back story of the woman who helped me tackle several problems in my childhood. The show, for me and I'm sure for many people growing up over the years, helped you understand that, no matter what, someone else is having the same problems as you and that was the beauty of the show; it helped you feel normal. Kudos to Linda Schuyler for her unending devotion to get the real story out and keep it real. This story showcased so many of these different scenarios and gave a behind-the-scenes look at how it all came together. Recommended for fans of the show, the stars, and/or television production; there's a lot to learn here and it's all great.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. I grew up watching Degrassi and I was very interested in the tidbits provided through this memoir about how some storylines came to be and how the show as a whole progressed from the very beginnings to the Degrassi I know and love.
I will say that I mistakenly thought there would be more behind the scenes information about the actual show than there was. This is after all a memoir about Linda Schuyler. I enjoyed learning about events that shaped her life and also played a large role in how she got to where she is as well as influencing some Degrassi storylines.
My only complaints would be that the stories were not always told in a linear fashion and it was a little hard to keep track of via audio at times. I also wish this had been narrated by Linda herself.
I would definitely recommend this book to fans of Degrassi though!
