I enjoyed the premise of this book very much: an American is in London for work and is people watching. She sees a handsome man riding the double decker bus each day and creates a persona and story for him. She is hoping to find a British boyfriend while in town.
When the opportunity arises to meet this man she has dubbed as a prince, she is disappointed. She proceeds to continue being a bit unkind, if I'm being honest. Her actions did leave a bad taste in my mouth and made it a bit difficult to see how Rory falls for her...
Not a terrible book, but not exactly what I was expecting.
THE GOOD:
Really cute and sweet. Adorable. I really liked our heroine, Kat.
THE BAD:
Sadly, not reviewing this until five months later, so my memory is not the best. Although, the four-star rating is legit, as I entered that into GoodReads as soon as I finished!
CONCLUSION:
Recommended for fans of quirky rom-com's.
**3.5 stars
I almost DNFed this book. I could not stand how high and mighty Kat was. She so thought she was better than just about everybody in her life. And the way she had to "hide" herself when going on dates. I just wasn't in the mood for it. But something kept me reading this one, and I'm really glad I did. Actually, I know what kept me reading it. Rory. He is just the sweetest MMC I've read in such a long time.
I loved how he never did anything but be himself, and that gave Kat the courage to be herself too. And slowly, that led her to realize how badly she had let rom-coms sway the way she viewed love. Not to mention, it let her realize how great a guy Rory is, and how the little things he had been doing all along were stronger acts of love than the passion she was used to from previous guys or what she'd see in the movies.
This was a cute one. Though it did take me a minute to get past how truly awful I felt Kat was in the beginning, and honestly throughout a good chunk of the book.
I really enjoyed the sweetness of this book as we followed Kat on her journey to find her English Prince Charming. It did a great job of intertwining romance with self-exploration in a way that allowed Kat to refine her own priorities when it came to her career and her love life. Having the book based in England was a bonus!
Double-Decker Dreams by Lindsay MacMillan. Pub Date: June 6, 2023. Rating: 2. Major points for the cute cover design of this novel, but minimal points for the execution of this novel. In the description it said for fans of Josie Silver and Sophie Cousens, two authors that I love, but I felt this was misleading because I did not love this novel at all. The main character, Kat, was horrendous and honestly needs a major reality check and some mental health therapy. I thought about DNFing this novel multiple times because I found the main character such a drag but I did power through until the end because Rory saved the story. He was an angel, lovely and a really good guy. It's hard to find the romance in this story when Kat was such a horrible character. This was a big miss for me. Thanks to #netgalley and #alcovepress for this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
One of my bookish pet-peeves is when an adult character acts and/thinks really immature for their age. Unfortunately that was the case with this book. Main character Kat was that and more. She was also selfish and I just never found myself rooting for her happiness since I didn't like her as a character. There's really a lot that I didn't like about the book as a whole but I'd say that was my main complaint since it's a romance. Cute cover though!
Thank you to NetGalley and Alcove Press for providing me a digital reviewer copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

When I first started this story, I almost stopped. It was silly for the first little bit and I was sure I was not going to enjoy it. AND THEN!!!!!! It rapidly became one of my favourites. I absolutely loved it!!!!! It is not a typical love story and while there are over the top romantic bits to it, that is NOT the kind of love story it is (which made me love it even more.) I will absolutely be reading this one again and again and cannot wait to purchase a physical copy!!!!
The premise is cute, but I found the narrative voice of the heroine pretty annoying. To be fair I think that is partly about not relating to her attitude. I liked the hero, but the first person narration gets in the way of knowing him. Fine, but not one I’ll be foisting on others.
This was a great book to have a quick read with little to no thinking. I liked the thought of having a list of things you want to do and see.
I didn't finish this one due to just being uninterested and having too many good books on my TBR
Thanks for the advanced copy
I really wanted to like this book! I am a huge fan of a good London romance but this just did not quite hit the mark for me. I felt like a lot of the dialogue was often cringey and slightly millennial coded. I think it could definitely be enjoyed by someone else, but it was not for me!
I'm a sucker for any book in Europe, but thus one fell flat for me. Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review
I thought I'd really enjoy this based on the synopsis but I hated the MC. She needs so much therapy and reflection and I cannot stand books where the MC does not experience any growth.
This was a miss for me.
Sincere thanks to NetGalley and Alcove Press for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Another okay read
Perfect book to curl up with and to get lost in
Will have you hooked from the first page
Thanks NetGalley
I received this book from NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All statements above are my true
opinions after fully reading this book. This was a quick & enjoyable read!
Loved this novel! I think we can all identify with having a 'mental list' of musts for our future partner and then learning the valuable lesson of keeping our eyes open. Would make for a fantastic movie!
The blurb was very promising but I found the main character very annoying and I found it difficult to like her, thus I also found it difficult to read this book.
Such a fun read! I love a good fun romance read where nothing too made overly complicated- a great palet cleanser after a heavier read
although the premise of this book sounded interesting enough for me to request it, actually trying to read it was very different and not quite what I expected from it. I very rarely DNF books and if I don't like something, I might put them on hold, but I tried reading Double-Decker a few times and I'm finally ready to put it aside and admit that this book is definitely not for me. I didn't find main character's fantasies about her perfect guy endearing or cute, because I couldn't relate to it all and couldn't understand her behaviour at all. Her thoughts about career and grinding also didn't appeal to me as it seems that I've read/seen something similar to this ambition so many times, that it doesn't affect me at this point and I didn't feel like I need to root for Kat at all. It's a shame, that this story was not what I imagined it would be, but maybe it would feel much better for someone else.
