I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Their Burning Graves’, the eighth in the Detective Morgan Brookes series written by Helen Phifer, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Sally Lawson arrives home and is surprised to see her house in darkness with no sign of her husband David or teenage son Tim. When the same evening a neighbour sees smoke coming from the Lawson’s house he calls emergency services who discover three bodies. DC Morgan Brookes and DS Ben Matthews try to work out why a well thought of family should be brutally murdered and why another woman should feel threatened as she feels someone is watching her.
‘Their Burning Graves’ is another exciting instalment in the series with the investigation made more difficult as it coincides with the funeral of their late colleague Des who died during their previous case in ‘Silent Angel’. Yet again this thriller contains suspense, drama, intrigue and lots of twists and turns as Morgan risks her own life to save the killer’s next victims and the story finishes with a breath-taking conclusion. It’s kept me glued to my Kindle until the early hours and I can definitely recommend it.
Firstly I would like to thank netgalley, and Bookoutune, and the fantastic author Helen phifer for an early copy of this book.
Another fantastic read from this author, still to catch up with this series and works well as a standalone book.A burning house with a family inside,Detective Morgan Brooks is at the scene, she discovers three members of the family tied to a table with a missing limb..who is behind this killings?a tail biting ending..a fantastic read, one of my favourites in this series..looking forward to reading more of her books..highly recommend...
This book will be reviewed on goodreads and Amazon UK.
DC Morgan Brooks and the team are back! A house has been set on fire and inside an entire family are found sitting around the dining table bound, suffocated by plastic bags over their heads and their right hands severed. Their are religious connotations to this case and the time is ticking to find out who killed this family and why .
A fast paced episode, with Brooks as intuitive as ever, together her and the team piece the clues together to solve this heinous crime. Another brilliant masterpiece by Helen Phifer.
Morgan Brookes has no rest after the last case. Saying goodbye to Des is the hardest part but crime doesn’t stop in Cumbria and a brutal murder of a family has the team on another case.
As always Helen writes wonderful characters and the development of Morgan and Ben’s relationship is perfect. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC.
This was my first book by Helen Phifer (the 8th in the series). I would probably have benefited from reading the previous ones, but still enjoyed it. The darkness of the murders was offset by the lovely relationships between the team members. They are so well suited and have respect for each other and the victims of the crimes. The playing of music that would have been loved by the victim during his autopsy really touched me.
Detective Morgan Brookes is plucky, empathetic and very likeable. The murders are horrendous and graphic and she and the team put 100% into the case, determined to find justice for the victims, which they do. The identity of the murderer was a total surprise! Definitely recommended!
Detective Morgan Brookes #8
When reports come in of a family trapped in a burning house, Detective Morgan Brookes rushes to the scene. But as soon as she enters the ruined home, she is devastated by what she finds. Tied to the kitchen table, Sally and David Lawson, and their young son, had no chance of escaping the flames and smoke. Neighbours agree the Lawsons were the perfect family, and CCTV shows nothing suspicious. Morgan's only clue is the silver crucifix necklace around Sally's neck. Because according to friends, Sally wasn't religious. Was someone passing devine judgement on the mother and her family? Focusing on Sally's last steps, Morgan get the breakthrough she needs - just days ago Sally had confined in a friend that someone was watching her.
This is another great addition to the Morgan Brookes series. The team are still devastated after the tragic event that took place in their last case. Ben, Morgan and the rest of their team want to get the Lawson case solved asap. This is quite a dark read. The pace is fast from the beginning. There's plenty of twist and turns in this well written and gripping read. I love the authors writing style. She knows how to pull you in and keep your attention throughout. We have a few suspects to choose from. I like that we get some continuity from the previous book. There were a few loose ends left hanging, ready to be tied up in the next book. I hope we don't have to wait too long.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookuture and the author #HelenPhifer for my ARC of #TheirBurningGraves in exchange for an honest review.
Just like every book in this series, this one started off with a bang! A horrific murder discovered at the scene of a house fire has Morgan Brookes back working with her team. After the horrible events of the last book where we lost a team member, everything feels a little topsy turvy, but things are slowly working their way back to what passes for normal in the small town of Rydell Falls.
Certain things aspects of the crime have Morgan's spidey senses tingling, and the team is high on alert. There are twists and turns everywhere, our favorite suspicious priest, and a case that seems to be rooted in revenge... but revenge for what? was a specific member of the family targeted? and is anyone else in the killer's crosshairs? Will Ben and the rest of his team be able to stop this killer before anyone else gets hurt? This story was non-stop from beginning to end and I can't wait to see what kind of trouble Morgan will be getting herself into next!
A digital ARC of this book was provided to me by NetGalley and Bookouture. The opinions are my own and freely given.
This is #8 in the Morgan Brookes series.
This story starts in 1991 at a nightclub. The musics pumping, the drinks are flowing and the bodies are dancing. Then one of partiers leaves and a traffic accident ensues.
Fast forward to present day. A family is murdered, a neighbor is questioned and the street busy body makes a friend with Morgan.
As I went through this book, I forgot all about 1991, until about the same time that Morgan started to connect the dots. The team gains a new member who sees to calm Amy down a bit.
This is another excellent story in this series. I highly recommend reading them all.
Their Burning Graves is book 8 in the Detective Morgan Brookes Series by Helen Phifer
So this has been one series I've enjoyed since the very beginning.
I loved being back in Ryder Falls with Detective Morgan Brookes.
Trying to catch a killer and uncovering this mystery was a thrilling ride from start to finish.
I love Phifer's writing style and the characters she has created.
The characters created by Phifer are amazing, realistic and well developed.
A gripping, nail-biting start, the excitement meter was pinging off the chart, and the intrigue level was engagingly captivating. And the suspense was wonderfully rendered and unrelenting!
Their Burning Graves is a quick heart pounding thrill ride that will have you flipping the pages to see what happens next.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Bookouture,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this eARC!
Another action packed thriller featuring Morgan Brookes and her team. The characters keep growing and are very likeable. The story was different and kept my interest.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to join Detective Morgan's team and investigate a brutal murder. Tracks are almost gone, and time is running out....
But full of fantastic moments that are simply shocking, and intertwine through the dark threads of the story.
The first part starts a little slow, but the second part, with its fast and disturbing pace, contributes to this book getting under the reader's skin and keeps them on the edge of the seat till the very end.
This book was fabulous. I’m a huge Helen Phifer fan and this did not disappoint. A very clever story expertly woven to keep the reader guessing. It was a thrilling read which sucked me in and spat me out at the end, exhausted because I read very late into the night. It was a very hard book to put down. Loved it, it totally deserves five stars
An entire family are murdered in a gruesome fashion in their own home, which is then set on fire, Detective Morgan Brookes is appalled at what she finds.
Neighbours are questioned, and there may be a link between a neighbour and Sally.
Another woman is convinced that she is being stalked, and Morgan feels that these two cases are connected in some way.
In her inimitable fashion, Morgan follows her gut instinct and yet again has a close shave of her own.
This is another Helen Phifer book that I have thoroughly enjoyed. I knew it would keep me engaged from the first page, as they all do. I love the way the story weaves through the lives of the characters, and Morgan's life as well.
A five star read for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This one had a solid plot and some good characters. I enjoyed the basis of the story. I found some overlap and inconsistencies in the plot itself. Include an instance where the same thing occurs twice but the second time it’s told as if it’s the first time. The ending also leaves a glaring unanswered part of the plot and those two things took this down a bit for me.
However aside from what felt like a rush to end the story… the book itself was good.
Character development was good. Twist and turns and suspense was well done.
I’ve really enjoyed this installment in the Morgan Brookes detective series. I think Helen Phifer does a really interesting job connecting each book, almost slightly overlapping/immediately continuing the story. Each book picks up where you’ve left off, and there is some type of “continuation” at the end. For this reason I think these books are best served reading in order. The team is still reeling from the death of their colleague, and now are struggling to solve the horrific tragedy that has just occurred. It’s a tough storyline, but very engaging and I was anxiously turning the pages to get to the end. Can’t wait for the next installment. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to provide my honest review.
A perfect family was found brutally murdered inside a house which was set on fire.
Sally, David and Tim seemed to be a perfect family but their murders shocked nearly everyone in the neighborhood. When Detective Morgan is asked to investigate the case, she finds that the members are bounded and each of their hands are missing (bizarre disturbing) and now Morgan must find the killer before he or she will attack another family.
I have grown a liking towards Helen Phifer's books and I do like her writing style. Her writing captures the audience into the story and make the readers feel like they are part of the story. And despite the dark side of the story, I do like how she would add some funny parts in the book as well. This was a fast paced thriller and quite unputdownable as well with some twists and turns. There are so many suspects and you have no idea which person might be responsible for the murder, which is a good thing in thriller books as you are clueless as what is going to happen next. Overall, I immensely enjoyed reading the book and can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Worth five whopping stars!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
Detective Morgan Brookes book eight.
The Lawson family of Hest Bank Road, their house becomes a burning grave.
Morgan and Ben Matthews and the team have a big job on their hands.
Once again a fantastic book, gripping, mind blowing right till the end.
I am hooked on this series that are so unputdownable and addictive.
Full on action from the start to the finish 5 stars
Well written with a compelling storyline and well developed characetrs. It was a gripping read that was twisty enough to keep me guessing and suspenseful enough to have me on the edge of my seat
This was a little slow at the beginning, but it sure got better 1/2 thru and the twists and turning were sensational.
very intriguing book.
Thank you net gallery for giving me the opportunity to read this great book.
How long is too long to avenge a murder? When is enough truly enough? This is the 1st book I have read by this author, and it was great as a stand alone! But now I am enticed by this great book to go and read the rest of the seeies, and I can't wait! The characters seem to flow, and they all seem to truly care for each other, and work well as a team minus one. The storyline was original, and for the most part fast paced. The emotions were a little lacking to me, but that's most likely because I didn't read this series in order. From the little bit of give away in this book, it seems our main character DC Morgan Brookes gets herself into trouble every now and again. And I personally can't wait to go back and read about her shenanigans!
